Giulia Airbase: Good take off and easy assembly in a sunny morning. Zone 2-3 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 4 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): No Jerrys on us and heavy flak shaked us but caused no damage. A good bomb drop for 2nd Lt. Coloosa. Light Flak was ineffective. But after bombing Jerrys were quite angry. We were attacked by a pair of Me-109s and a Me-210: two were damaged and preferred to move away while the third was intercepted by the escort. Subsequently, 3 Fw-190s arrived on us: the one at 3Low was intercepted by a P51; the one at 12 Lev was damaged and preferred to escape without hitting us. The third Fw-190 at 12 High managed to penetrate our defense but its shots only made a few holes. He tacked and looked for a second 3H pass but the S/Sgt Nelson at the Top turret knocked him down with accurate shots. It was then the turn of an Fw-190 accompanied by an Italian C-205. The German plane was intercepted, while the Italian plane avoided our shots and fired, causing only superficial damage. On its second pass, however, it was shot down by our gunners. Zone 3-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Landed Safely. -------------------------------------------------

Giulia Airbase: Take off and assembly went ok. Zone 2 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 3 Outbound: 2 Fw-190 and an italian G-55 attacked us head-on. One of the Jerrys was intercepted by the P51s, the second made a pass but without causing or receiving damage; The Italian plane, on the other hand, was hit on the right wing, which detached causing it to fall and screwed to the ground. Zone 4 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): As soon as we entered the target area we noticed a drop in the rpm of engine #1. Despite attempts to get it back up and running, I decided to turn it off to avoid possible further problems. We were then attacked in the rear by two Me-109s: the first was shot down by the tail gunner while the second preferred to run away when a P-51 got behind him and threatened him. Heavy Flak as we approached the target, many explosions but no damage affected our ship. Despite the chaotic situation and the sky full of smoke from flak shots, we managed to make a very good bomb drop. The flak was lighter and more inaccurate as we turned back to base, no damage reported. No bandits came to bother us. Zone 3-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Landed Safely. -------------------------------------------------

The Flak's barrage was very heavy. The sky was filled with black clouds and explosions. A shot exploded below us, causing the ship to jolt, but fortunately causing only some superficial damage to the bomb bay; a second shot exploded so close to the left wing that it knocked out engine #1, which we were able to stop and feather the propellers. Despite the damage and the sky full of debris and burning planes, we managed to keep the flight level and drop our payload on the target. On the way out the Flak was much milder, evidently the Germans had suffered the blow, and none of the bandits seemed to be interested in us. Zone 9-8 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Good take off and easy assembly in a sunny morning. Zone 2-5 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 6 Outbound: Some Jerrys spotted but not interested in us. Zone 7 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 8 Outbound: Attacked by 3 Fw-190. The first one was driven off by escort, while an a/c was shot down and the other heavily damaged drove away with black smoke coming out of the engine. Zone 9 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 10 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): As soon as we entered the target area 3 Me-109 they welcomed us: we immediately managed to shoot down the 12H one, while a P51 took care of the 9H one. The last one at 1.30Lev moved away after an unsuccessful exchange of shots. We watched some rockets explode nearby, but we didn't suffer any damage. 2 Fw-190s approached: the escort took care of the first, while the second continued its flight to other bombers. Flak over target was very heavy and accurate: a real wall of black puffs and splinters all over. A shrapnel hit RWG Sgt Hampton in the sternum, there was nothing he could do, he died almost immediately. Other pieces of metal superficially damaged the left wing without considerable damage, while a shot damaged the root of the right wing. This led to instability and difficulty in keeping the aircraft levelled, and the bomb drop was delayed. S/Sgt Weber took his place at the starboard waist machine gun. Light flak caused no damage. We were attacked by two Me-109s but both were intercepted by escort fighters. Zone 9-8 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 7 Inbound: 3 Fw-190s attacked us head-on, the escort managed to intercept 2 of them while the third, after having suffered a lot of damage from our shots, made a wide turn and moved away. It was then the turn of a Me-110 of 6Lev and a Me-110 of 9 Low, the latter being taken over by a P51, while the second caused no damage and escaped. When calm seemed to have broken off, 1 Fw-190 and 2 Me-109s came against us: we managed to shoot down the Me-109 at 3 Level. The second Me-109 passed through unscathed while the Fw-190 engaged in a dogfight with a P51. Zone 6-5 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 4 Inbound: A lone Me-109 showed up at 12H, but an escort fighter changed his mind with a few bursts. Zone 3-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Landed Safely. -------------------------------------------------

So I applied for the last B17 Spare available and here we are on this long mission.Giulia Airbase: Easy take-off and assembly. Zone 2-5 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 6 Outbound: attacked by a first wave of Fw-190s: the escort intercepted one of them while our gunners damaged the second Fw-190 in the bow; the tail gunner managed to hit and take down the Jerry at 6 Lev. Zone 7 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 8 Outbound: The escort intercepted 1 Me-109, 1 Fw-190 and a Me-110 and prevented them from getting too close to our bomber. One Fw-190 was damaged by our shells and preferred to flee. Zone 9 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 10 Outbound/Inbound Target Zone: As soon as we entered the target area the #2 engine started to lose revs and stopped, we couldn't get it to start again. Some rockets will explode near us causing some superficial damage. A 12-lev Fw-190 was intercepted by P51s. The Flak was heavy and very accurate. All around us were black clouds, explosions, burning planes, but as luck would have it, we were not harmed. The 2nd Lt. Nelson had plenty of time to align the sights, stabilize the a/c and perform a textbook bomb drop. When the smoke from the bombing cleared, the Flak resumed, but it was much milder than before, we had probably hurt him a lot! We were then attacked by 2 Fw-190s but both were engaged by the escort. Then it was the turn of a pair of Fw190s and a Me-410, which was intercepted before approaching us. One Fw-190, although damaged, managed to get close enough to hit us, slightly wounding the M/Sgt Burkey and slightly damaging the rudder. On the second pass, however, he was hit again and probably moved away to return to base. Zone 9-8 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 7 Inbound: A lone Fw190 was intercepted by P51s. We were then attacked by 4 Me-109s: one was driven away by the escort, one shot down by the Top Turret's shells, and the remaining two badly damaged moved away leaving trails of black smoke behind them. Zone 6-5 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 4 Inbound: Two Me-109s attacked us head-on: one was immediately removed from the escort, while the second managed to overcome our barrage and hit us, causing some damage and slightly injuring both the bombardier and the navigator. He attempted a second pass but this time we kept him away and he preferred to turn and head towards other bombers in the formation. Zone 3-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Landed safely. -------------------------------------------------

Zone 11 Outbound: German rockets into the formation: no damage reported. Zone 12 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): 4 Fw-190s were upon us as soon as we entered the area. Without an escort fighter it was tough: one Fw-190 6 Low was shot down and one 12 Lev was damaged and abandoned the fight. The other two, though damaged, managed to penetrate our defenses causing extensive damage, knocking out Bomb Bay controls and seriously wounding S/Sgt Jones in the abdomen. On the second pass they still managed to avoid our shots and some of their shells hit the left wing's outboard tank, which fortunately self-sealed. The flak was heavy: the plane was shaken by the numerous explosions but fortunately we did not suffer any damage. The 2nd Lt. Griffis descended into Bomb Bay and tried to manually unlock the hatches and drop the bombs, which he managed to do but late. Flak was still heavy and some rockets entered the formation but both caused no damage to our ship. S/Sgt Jones was transported to the radio room by 2nd Lt. Griffis who gave him first aid, stabilizing his situation and administering morphine to keep him calm. He then took his place in the Top Turret. Zone 11 Inbound: We were attacked by 4 Me-109s: the 10.30High one passed quickly and moved away. The 12 High was damaged and made a climb away from us, while the 12 Level was shot down. The last 3 High was hit but continued and a burst of it caused some superficial damage, but on its second pass it was shot down. Zone 10-5 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 4 Inbound: German bombs dropped from above caused superficial damage. Zone 3-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Landed safely. The ambulance immediately loaded the S/Sgt Jones and quickly transported him to the hospital. In this mission we suffered a serious loss: the S/Sgt Jones, although he survived the surgery he underwent following the wound to the abdomen, can no longer be embarked on board the bombers. After 10 days in the hospital he will be returned to the US. In addition to losing a dear friend, we also lose a skilled aviator who is contemptuous of danger.

From an encrypted radio message received by the Yugoslav partisans, we learn that a group of partisans has rescued 9 members of the crew of an American bomber who parachuted in the vicinity of the city of Aleksinac. Probably the bomber finsihed the fuel. The German soldiers managed to arrest only 1 crew member. All the rescued men are in good health and will be returned to the territory of occupied Italy as soon as the opportunity arises. From some witnesses aboard other bombers of the formation, the bomber "Irascible Girl" abandoned the formation in the outbound zone 11 after being attacked by German fighters. No radio communication received suggests that the on-board radio was out of order.-------------------------------------------------

Giulia Airbase: Take off and assembly ok. Zone 2-4 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 5 Outbound: German fighters driven off by other bombers. Zone 6-8 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 9 Outbound: Two Fw-190s attacked us head-on: one was damaged and continued straight on its course, the second was intercepted by the escort. Zone 10 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 11 Outbound: A lone Fw-190 tried to trouble us but preferred to escape after being heavily damaged. Zone 12 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone):As soon as we entered the area we were attacked by 2 Ju-88s but our shots damaged them and they were forced to move away with evasive maneuvers. After a few minutes an Fw-190 from 9H tried to attack us on the flank but was shot down by the Top turret. Flak's fire over the target was intense and accurate and caused some damage to the structures, also injuring both waist gunners, fortunately slightly. We managed to make a good bomb drop. After the bombing, the Flak resumed with the same intensity and this time it was the tail gunner who suffered a slight wound as well as a few more holes in the ship's metal. We were then attacked by a pair of Fw-190s: the first to approach was shot down, while the second continued its run without doing or receiving damage. Zone 11 Inbound: Two Fw-190s tried to prevent our return to base, but after some exchange of clpi and some damage they preferred to head for other targets. Zone 10 Inbound: Sgt Ingram suffered the failure of his right machine gun just as we were attacked by 3 Me-109s which fortunately were all intercepted by the escort fighters. Zone 9 Inbound: Right waist gun was fixed by flight engineer S\Sgt Castleberry. Zone 8-5 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 4 Inbound: A couple of Me-210s tried to get us through a few bad times, but the escort fighters were on alert and turned them away from us. Zone 3-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Baptism of fire for my crew and the ship "Lady Lola". Time to settle in the quarters, become familiar with the base and the other comrades and it is already time to leave for the first mission. Giulia Airbase: Take off and assembly ok. Zone 2-8 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 9 Outbound: German fighters were sighted, which turned their attentions to the other bombers, ignoring us completely. Zone 10 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 11 Outbound: Some rockets were fired into the formation, but did not cause any damage. Zone 12 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): We were attacked by 3 Me-109s, one of which was from the Romanian Air Force: the latter was damaged and moved away, leaving a trail of black smoke behind it, while the other two chose other targets after an exchange of mutual fire that had no effect. Flak was instead very precise and fierce. The sky was full of black clouds that appeared in the sky around us very consistently. Some shrapnel knocked out the radio and opened a few holes in the fuselage. Despite all the commotion and fear of being hit by the metal shrapnel that filled the sky, the 2nd Lt. Swanson maintained concentration and despite the smoke screens lit by the enemy to protect the refinery, he managed to hit the target with a good result. Flak continued heavily and a shot exploded very close to the nose section, lightly wounding both the bombardier and the navigator. As this ceased, enemy fighters appeared: we were attacked by 2 Me-109s and one Me-210. The Me-109 9Lv was knocked down by the joint shots of the Top turret and the left gunner, while the other two, heavily damaged, preferred to interrupt the attack and moved away. Then 2 Fw-190s appeared, one attacked us in vertical dive, but failed to hit us and continued its trajectory moving away, while the second was damaged and turned wide to get away from the range of our guns. Without the support of escort fighters and with such an angry flak the situation was not pleasant. Zone 11 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 10 Inbound: During a call shift to check on the crew's health, 2nd Lt. Swanson did not answer. The 2nd Lt. Hoagland approached to check and found the officer completely unconscious and with his oxygen mask completely frozen, who knows how long he had been in this condition. He was transported to the radio room and given first aid and attached to the O2 system. Radio Operator T/Sgt Castiilo took his place. Zone 9-5 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 4 Inbound: We were attacked by a first wave consisting of 2 Me-110s which were intercepted by escort fighters. The second wave, consisting of 2 Me-109s and 1 Me-210, saw the 6H Me-210 be shot down, while one Me-109 preferred to escape after receiving a few hits to the fuselage. The Me-109 in vertical climb was instead attacked by two escort fighters. Zone 3-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Landed Safely. -------------------------------------------------

Zone 2-6 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 7 Outbound: Light coastal flak, no damage reported. Zone 8-9A Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 9B Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone):Atacked by a lone Me-109 who was driven off by escort. Medium flak over the target caused some damages. The Flak's fire, the cloud-obscured target, and the bombardier's lack of experience on its first mission, meant that the launch was completely off target. Light flak with no damage and no GAF during egress. Zone 8 Inbound: Some bombs launched from above exploded closed to our ship but fortunately just some superficial damage were reported. Zone 7-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Landed Safely. -------------------------------------------------

Zone 10 Outbound: We were attacked by a first wave of 2 Fw-190s (both removed from the escort) and 1 Me-210 of 6H easily shot down by the joint shots of the Top and Tail turrets. It was then the turn of a pair of Fw-190s: one intercepted by the escort and one escaped after receiving a lot of damage. 2 Fw-190s more on us: the first to approach was removed from the escort, the second preferred to head towards other targets after an exchange of shots without damage to both. Zone 11 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): We were attacked by 3 Fw-190s and 2 Me-110s in several waves, but our "guardian angel" fighters made sure that they did not fire a single shot at us. Heavy flak over the target, but we pass the barrage of fire unscathed. The 2nd Lt Dirigo managed to drop the bombs with a good result. Light flak after bombing: no damage reported. We were then attacked frontally by 2 Fw-190s: one was taken over by the escort while the second was heavily damaged and moved away leaving a trail of black smoke behind it. A second wave of 2 Me-210s tried to get close to us but our machine gunners shot down one and damaged the other. It was then the turn of 2 Me-109s: the one that attacked us from behind was damaged and interrupted the attack, while the second one that attacked us in vertical dive, managed to avoid our blows fortunately causing only a few holes in the metal. On the second pass, however, he was not so lucky and was knocked down by our shots. Giulia Airbase: Take off and assembly ok. We called our crew "The Jimmies Crew" due to the high number of guys nick-named "Jimmy". Zone 2-9 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 10 Outbound: Attacked by a couple of Me-110: the first to approach was intercepted by the escort, while the second was shot down. Zone 11 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): We were attacked by 4 Fw-190s: the one coming from 1.30H was intercepted and driven away while the one from 3Lev was shot down; the other two managed to get close and shoot causing us some damage, fortunately not serious. On the second pass, however, they were heavily damaged by our shots and preferred to move away. The Flak was very intense but fortunately we did not suffer any damage and we managed to place the bombs on the target. On egress some Flak shrapnel hit us but only made a few holes in the fuselage. As soon as the shots stopped we were attacked by 2 Me-109s: the first was intercepted while the second moved away without harming us. Suddenly some explosions near us shook the ship but despite the fear of the unexpected explosions, we did not suffer any damage. Probably some bombs were dropped from above the formation. He applied a portable respirator to the commander who slowly regained his senses. It was no longer safe to fly in this situation. I then took command of the ship: I had the captain taken to the Radio Room and asked the flight engineer to help me in the flight. Zone 2 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 3 Outbound: A lone Fw-190 immediately intercepted by the escort. Zone 4-9 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 10 Outbound: Engine #1 began to lose rpm. Together with T/Sgt Yelton we carried out a series of checks and restarts. We managed to keep it running but at half power. We were attacked by a pair of Me-110s: the 6 Low was intercepted and removed, while the second in vertical climb avoided our shots and with some bursts caused superficial damage and disabled the radio. On the second pass, however, it was shot down by our machine guns. Zone 11 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): We went out of formation due to a loss of power in engine #1 and the payload still on board. Some rockets penetrated the formation but exploded far enough away from us without causing damage. We were attacked by 4 Me-110s: we managed to damage 3 of them, which moved away, while the fourth was damaged by escorting fighters and moved away. The Flak was of medium intensity, but did not cause damage. Approaching the target and leveling the plane allowed us to carry out a good drop of bombs. Failed to rejoin the formation after bombing. Medium Flak but no damage reported. A starling of 3 Fw-190s headed towards us: the first to approach from 3H was intercepted by the escort, while the other two had free rein and avoiding our shots fired some volleys that caused us damage, fortunately not serious. On the second pass we damage one, who preferred to run away while the second was shot down. It was then the turn of a single Fw-190, but the escort was attentive and intercepted its course before it approached us. Zone 10 Inbound: Rejoined formation. Attacked by 3 Fw-190s: 2 of them were taken into custody by our guardian angels, the third preferred to move away after being damaged to the engine. Zone 9-3 Inbound: Nothing to report Zone 2 Inbound: We were first attacked by 1 Fw-190, then by 1 Me-109, but both were unable to get closer thanks to the escort fighters. Giulia Airbase: Landed Safely. -------------------------------------------------

Zone 2-9 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 10 Outbound: We were attacked by 2 Fw-190s: the 12H one was intercepted by a P39 of the 350FG, while the one that attacked us in vertical dive continued its course without causing us and receiving damage. Zone 11 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): We were attacked by 4 Fw-190s: the guys of the 350FG did a great job intercepting three of them, while the fourth was damaged and ran away. The flak was quite intense and some shrapnel hit us, irreparably damaging the mechanisms and the machine gun of the ball turret. Sgt. Krick remained imprisoned in his plexiglass sphere for the rest of the mission. We had plenty of time to prepare for the bombs, but the result was not exceptional. The flak returned to be felt as soon as the smoke from the explosions disappeared a little, but fortunately it did not cause us any damage. Giulia Airbase: Take off and assembly went ok. Zone 2-10 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 11 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): As soon as we entered the area, the ship was shaken by violent explosions caused by some bombs dropped from above in the formation. Then it was the turn of 2 Fw-190s that approached: one was taken over by a P39 while the second moved away after a few exchanges of fire without damage. Above the objective the flak was quite intense and a shrapnel slightly wounded Sgt Hess in the right leg. This did not prevent us from aligning ourselves with the objective and leveling the ship and carrying out the bomb dropping. As soon as the smoke from the explosions cleared, the flak began to hammer again, but with less vigor than before and caused us no damage. We were then attacked by 3 Me-110s, 2 of which were engaged by our escort and the third damaged, preferred to move away by performing an evasive maneuver. Zone 10-4 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 3 Inbound:Attacked by 2 Fw-190: one was intercepted while the second, more impertinent, managed to avoid our shots and make some holes in the nose section. However, we managed to damage it and preferred to turn its attention to other bombers. Zone 2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Landed Safely. Sgt Hess was treated on the side of the runway and taken to hospital. He will have it for a couple of days. -------------------------------------------------

Zone 6 Inbound: We were attacked by 3 Me-110s which, however, did not have their lucky day as they were all shot down by the precise shots of our gunners. Zone 5-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Landed Safely. -------------------------------------------------

- Sgt Michael Mosley: KIA - shattered sternum and ruptured heart Awards:- PH posthumous: Sgt Michael Mosley Promotions:--AAR (flown with TFT)Giulia Airbase: Routine take off and assembly. Zone 2-7 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 8 Outbound: Two Me-109 on us, but they found our little angels waiting for them. Zone 9 Outbound: Nothing to report.
Zone 10 Outbound/Inbound: We were attacked by 3 Me-109s and a Me-210 heavy fighter. The Me-109s were intercepted by the escort fighters, but the Me-210 managed to penetrate our defenses and a walking hit caused us a lot of damage and killed the tail gunner instantly. We found our revenge on his second pass, when he was shot down by our gunners. We were then attacked by 1 Fw-190 and 1 Me-109 but they did not overcome the barrage made by our escort fighters. A third wave consisting of 4 Me-109s headed towards us: 2 were intercepted and removed, while the other 2 changed their target after an exchange of shots without damage between us and them. During the damage check we realized that the Intercomm system had completely blown up. I decided to abort the mission and drop the bombs immediately using manual doors opening. Port waist gunner Sgt. Brian Hines removed the body of Sgt. Mosley and took his place in tail position. Zone 9-3 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 2: Complete O2 system failure. Giulia Airbase: Landed safely. Given the extent of the damage reported, there will be a lot of work to do for the T/Sgt Hamilton.
