PH: Sgt H. Lawson PH: Sgt D. McDowell AAR (flown with TFT)
Sudbury Airbase: Take-off and assembly were with no problems. Zone 2 Outbound: Nothing to report Zone 3 Outbound: Coastal flak approaching Dutch coasts with no damage. Attacked by 4 Fw-190s of which 3 were intercepted by P51s and the last one moved away after hits without effect from both sides. Zone 4 Outbound: The escort fighters drove 2 Me-109s away from us. Another Me-109 moved away without damage while the last remaining Me-109 after missing our shots, hit us rendering the Tail Guns inoperative, damaging the right aileron and slightly wounding the tail gunner. During his second attack he was shot down by Sgt Caruso's accurate shots, which hit the fuselage of the enemy plane, devastating the canopy and killing the pilot. Zone 5 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 6 Outbound: Sgt. Reid's voice over the intercom alerted us that Sgt. Lawson had fallen to the ground suddenly, without injury but presenting a completely frozen oxygen mask. He was immediately rescued by S/Sgt. Forster with a portable oxygen tank and transported unconscious to the radio room. After stabilizing the injured man S/Sgt Forster took his place in the waist compartment. Some shots by Flak caused no damage. Zone 8 Outbound: Light Flak but no damage reported Zone 9 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): We approached the IP without being disturbed by enemy fighters or Flak. The toggler 2nd Lt. Cathey disengaged as soon as he saw the flares from the pathfinder. The Flak turned out to be quite inaccurate, causing us no damage. A lone Fw-190 tried to attack us from 9H but the escort did its job, pushing him away. We continued to drop windows and leaflets over German territory. Zone 8-7 Inbound: Observed light Flak, no damage. Zone 6-2 Inbount: Nothing to report. Sudbury Airbase: Landed safely. Medical personnel took care of the two wounded men. The chief physician told us that Lawson would probably never be able to fly again because of anoxia damage. --------------------------------------------------Bryan Downey, 2 LT, USAAF, Commanding B-24DJ: Cheers for Beer B24J-CF-42-64333 78th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment Group

Sudbury Airbase: Take-off ok but just after assembly engine #2 turbocharger failed. Decided to continue the mission. Zone 2 Outbound: Nothing to report Zone 3-4 Outbound: Out of formation due to turbocharger failure, altitude greater than 12.000 feet and bombs still on board. Zone 5 Outbound: Still out of formation. Light Flak caused no damage. Zone 6 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): Jerrys attacked us but just one Me-109 was able to overtake the escort but could do nothing against our gunners, who shot it down by destroying the tail section (no chute was seen coming out of the falling plane). After the first wave we were attacked by a second wave. Two Fw-190s were driven away from the escort while one Fw-190 at 1.30H was shot down. Another Fw-190 was damaged and moved away without damaging us. One last Me-109 approached but neither its nor our shots caused damage, and it moved away. The Flak was very heavy, all around us were full of black clouds, and we could hear the blasts of shrapnel hitting our plane. One shot exploded just short of the right side of the Nose, causing the almost instantaneous death of the bomber and navigator, who remained motionless in their positions. S/Sgt. Forster moved to bombardier position and moved the comrade's body and tried to do what needed to be done, dropped the bombs when he saw the flares, but perhaps too late or missed something, as it did not look like a good throw, but then again, that was not his job. After bombing no GAF attack nor Flak shots diturbed us and we moved to going back home when bombs dropped from above exploded near our ship damaging oxygen tanks and rubber rafts in bomba bay compartment. Engineer Lerch tried to stem the oxygen leak as best he could and calculated that we would still be able to return to base without any problems. As we left the target zone we were attacked by 4 planes; two Fw-190s were intercepted by the escort. One Me-109 attacked us from 12Lv but was shot down while another Fw-190 was heavily damaged and preferred to turn away. Zone 5 Inbound: Left Waist gunner Reid substituted Radio Op., who returned to his position, at NG position. With no bombs load we successfully rejoined the formation. Attacked by 2 Me-110, one of them driven away by the escorting P47s and the other was damaged and continued its course toward other targets, without harming us. Some light flak shots below us caused no damage. Zone 4-2 Inbount: Nothing to report. Sudbury Airbase: Preparing to land, we launched flares to report injured people on board, even though it was now clear that there was nothing more we could do for our comrades. Landing went off without a hitch. It was a bad mission, an unsatisfactory outcome, and two friends who will never see their loved ones. --------------------------------------------------Bryan Downey, 2 LT, USAAF, Commanding B-24DJ: Cheers for Beer B24J-CF-42-64333 78th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment Group

- AM to all crew - PH posthumous: Sgt. P. Boyd Promotions: -- AAR (flown with TFT) Sudbury Airbase:Bad weather over the base made takeoff and assembly operations hard but went ok. Zone 2-4 Outbound: Nothing to report Zone 5 Outbound: We were attacked by two Me-262s, Goering's new toys. One after a vertical dive in which we both missed moved away below us looking for other targets. The second, on the other hand, probably piloted by an ace, made three waves of attack, inflicting light damage on us, before pulling away. Zone 6 Outbound: The Flak tried to halt our course toward Frankfurt with a barrage of medium-power fire. The ship was rocked by nearby explosions. "I'm hit! Oh shit..I'm hit! Help me!" the voice of tail gunner Sgt Boyd burst over the intercom. S/Sgt Lapp reported that he was going to check on his wounded comrade. He returned after a few minutes, his face pale and his hands smeared with blood, telling us that there was nothing more to be done for Boyd and that he would take his place in the rear. Zone 7 Outbound/Inbound (target zone): A very strange rocket plane, what must have been a Me-163, swooped down on us, was so fast that the shots reached his position after he had long since passed. Luckily for us it did not hit us, and as we passed by we heard the roar of its engines. We lost sight of him. The Flak although quite intense caused us no damage and allowed us to get to the IP. Unfortunately, due to the agitation and discouragement over the loss of Boyd that reigned aboard we were not ready for the PF signal and delayed dropping the bombs, which missed the target. The Flak thundered again and some shrapnel hit the left wing and knocked out the tail section's O2 system. S/Sgt Lapp abandoned the tail section and returned to the Radio Room. No GAF attacked us on egress. Zone 6 Inbound: Light Flak caused no damage Zone 5-2 Inbound: nothing to report Sudbury Airbase: Landed safely. This will be an already sad Christmas because they are away from home, but even sadder because of the loss of our "old man" Boyd. -------------------------------------------------- Arthur Hayward, 1 LT, USAAF, Commanding B-17G: Ugly Duckling B-17G-90BO 43-38619 80th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment Group

Zone 2-5 Outbound: Nothing to report Zone 6 Outbound: Medium Flak just caused superficial damage. Zone 7 Outbound/Inbound (target zone): A loud roar behind us shook the whole ship. During the damage control call the tail gunner, Sgt Walton did not answer. The Radio Op. S/Sgt Blount moved to check and shortly after warned us that Walton was examining in his place, a shrapnel had hit him in the head. Probably a German bomber had dropped a bomb from above our altitude. Medium Flak over the target was irrelevant and we managed to release our load with a good result. Flak again caused superficial damage. Zone 6 Inbound: Light Flak caused no damage. LWG Sgt. Brooks moved to tail gun position. Zone 5-2 Inbound: nothing to report Sudbury Airbase: Landed safely. AAR (flown with TFT)"Hey guys! Today mission it will be a long one! So keep your eyes open and triggers ready to welcome the Jerrys!"Sudbury Airbase: Bad weather but both takeoff and assembly performed with no accidents. Zone 2-8 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 9 Outbound: Two He-162 jets and a Me-109 jetted out of the clouds headed toward us. The escort engaged the Me-109 as the two jets pulled away after exchanging shots without substantial damage on either side. Light Flak but no damage reported. Zone 10 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): Attacked by 2 Fw-190, one driven off; the one attacking from VD caused no damage and went away undamaged. Medium flak shots fairly close but fortunately only dislodged some paint from the tail compartment. Approaching the target and dropping the bombs occurred without any disturbance. By one estimate 50 percent of the load should have been successful. Again flak, light this time and caused no damage. No GAF attacked us after bombing. Zone 9-6 Inbound: Flak was present in all of these areas, with medium to low intensity and caused no damage. Zone 5 Inbound: Two Me-262s, the Luftwaffe's new jets, attacked us. The escort could do nothing. The 1.30Lv fighter flew past us, avoiding our shots but doing no damage, and turned away headed for more bombers. The second was hit in the fuselage by an accurate burst from T/Sgt Lerch, which shattered the canopy and probably killed the pilot because the jet disappeared below us. Zone 4-2 Inbount: Nothing to report. Sudbury Airbase: Landing safely at the base. Tonight T/Sgt Lerch has to pay a full load of beer for his first jet shot down--------------------------------------------------Bryan Downey, 1 LT, USAAF, Commanding B-24DJ: Cheers for Beer B24J-CF-42-64333 78th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment Group

Medium flak while approaching IP caused Radio system outage. Bombs load launched on Pathfinder signal but 2nd Lt Hale needs more practice to reach good results. Again light flak, caused no damage. Attacked by two Me-262 jets; the first one after passing without hitting us and being hit, was damaged by some shots from the tail guns and moved away. Second jet, attacking from 10.30Lo was shut down after LWG Brooks shredded his left wing (seen pilot bailed out). A second wave attacked us: a formation of 3 Fw-190. Mustangs engaged one of them. One was severely damaged at the tail and disappeared into the clouds, the other was hit at the engine which caught fire, turning the entire plane into a fireball that fell to earth from the sky (the pilot did not have time to bail out). Zone 9 Inbound: Rockets launched from aft., exploded near us but no damages were reported. Light flak cause no damage as well. Zone 8-6 Inbound: Numerous Flak shots as we flew over these areas.
