Zone 7 Outbound: nothing to report. Zone 8 Outbound/Inbound (target zone): As we approached the target we were attacked by fighters in two waves. In the first wave there were 3 Fw-190, one of which was intercepted by the escort, one was damaged and moved away, the third one, after having been hit on the fuselage, continued its flight, as if the pilot did not rule, probably he was fatally wounded. The second wave consisted of 3 Me-109s but one was immediately intercepted and engaged by the escort. With the other two we exchanged blows causing superficial damage to each other. They returned to continue the attack but we damaged both and forced them to abandon the hunt. The Flak was poor and inaccurate, allowing us to get on target and drop our load. We met no further resistance en route to the base. Giulia Airbase: Takeoff and assembly was fine. Route to France Zone 2 Outbound: Spotted a Ju-88 immediately intercepted by escort fighters. Zone 3 Outbound: Attacked by 2 Me-109 intercepted and removed by escort. After a few minutes we were attacked by 2 Fw-190, one of which intercepted and started a dog-fight with an escort fighter. The second Fw-190, after being damaged, was shot down by Sgt Howard with a passing shot. Zone 7 (Target Zone) Outbound/Inbound: We were attacked by two Me-110s that had just entered the area but were held off by the P47s that accompanied us. We passed through the first Flak barrage unharmed and dropped our bombs: looking at the high water sprays we realized we had not hit the ships (two tankers) directly but since the explosions occurred near the hulls we had probably damaged them. We moved out of the area without sustaining heavy damage from the Flak and without being disturbed by enemy fighters. Zone 6-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 2 Outbound: A lone Me-109 intercepted by escort fighters Zone 3-6 Outbound: nothing to report. Zone 7 Outbound/Inbound (target zone): A first wave of Jerrys (3 Fw-190s) attacked us but were held off by the escort boys. Not even the time to recover and a new wave attacked us: 4 Fw-190s headed towards us, two were intercepted by the escort while one Fw-190 at 12H was shot down by T/Sgt Jones who set fire to the tanks making the aircraft explode; the second fighter at 6Lo was hit by Sgt Fawler's shots (who had just arrived from the States and was assigned to our ship) which completely destroyed the right wing making the enemy fighter fall in a spin. No hope for both German pilots. As we approached the target we were attacked by 3 more Fw-190s, 2 of which were pushed away by P-47s and the third, slightly damaged, moved away after missing us. The Flak did not pose a problem allowing us to get within sight of the shipping and drop the bombs. We observed several explosions next to several ships which probably caused some damage, albeit slight, to them. One bomb hit a freighter, destroying the deck and starting a fire on board. As we turned for the new course we saw it explode. The Flak was fortunately still inaccurate and did not cause us any damage. However, we were attacked by a new wave of 4 Fw-190s, the first of which was immediately intercepted and moved away. Two Jerrys were damaged and forced to finish the attack without causing damage and the last remaining Fw-190 was missed by our guns but also did not cause damage and disappeared in pursuit of other targets. AAR (flown with TFT)Giulia Airbase: Despite the bad weather on base, we managed to take off and join the squadron without too many problems. Zone 2-4 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 5 (Target Zone) Outbound/Inbound: The first wave saw an Fw-190 intercepted by a P47 escort, while the second one attacked us with a vertical dive, but the crossfire caused no damage to either of them and they moved away. The second wave, three Me-110s, one of which was intercepted and moved away, saw one of them destroyed by our shots which hit the tail section and destroyed it, the aircraft crashed and we did not observe any chute abandoning it. The third one, which attacked us in vertical climb, was hit in the fuselage and probably the pilot was wounded, as he fled without even firing a shot. On the third wave, the first Fw-190 was intercepted, while the second one was shot down by T/Sgt Rodriguez's shots, which sharply detached the left wing. The third Fw-190 on the other hand, having avoided our shots, was able to aim and fire, causing damage to the auxiliary hydraulic system and other superficial damage. It had time to turn and returned to attack, but this time our shots stopped it and it was shot down. The run up to the objective did not see any other problems, even the Flak was quite inaccurate and weak, allowing us to align and level properly and, despite the less than optimal visibility we managed to drop the bombs from a very good position. Once the smoke had cleared, the Flak returned to make itself felt, but again with poor results. No Jerrys bothered us, allowing us to turn the bow towards the return course. Zone 4-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: We landed without damage, despite the low visibility and bad weather on base.--------------------------------------------------Clifford Morris, 1LT, USAAF commanding B-24j Chattanooga Choo Choo Cheeky Pigeon 78th (H) Bomb Squadron

AAR (flown with TFT)Giulia Airbase: Hard take off due to bad weather, anyway no problems and joined formation. Zone 2-7 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 8 (Target Zone) Outbound/Inbound: Attacked by two Me-109: the tail one after being damaged abandoned the attack. The other Jerry, at 12H, was shot down by the accurate fire of T/Sgt Rodriguez. Inaccurate Flak shots did not hinder the achievement of the objective. The bombs were dropped in perfect trim, the result was not determinable due to the heavy cloud cover which obstructed the view. Additional Flak shots, but inaccurate and at lower elevation caused no problems. We were attacked by a Me-109 and a Me-110, both of which were shot down with accurate shots. Zone 7-2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Rain and bad visibility made the landing more difficult than usual, but it was still safe. --------------------------------------------------Clifford Morris, 1LT, USAAF commanding B-24j Chattanooga Choo Choo Cheeky Pigeon 78th (H) Bomb Squadron

Jackson AAR (flown with TFT)Giulia Airbase: Good weather granted an easy take off and assembly. Zone 2-4 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 5 (Target Zone) Outbound/Inbound: Attacked by a formation of two Me-210s quickly intercepted and engaged by the escort. Second wave of two Me-110s, one intercepted by the escort, the second shot down by Nose Turret rounds, which destroyed the left wing of the aircraft. Observed pilot bailed out. Flak shots inaccurate, reported only some superficial damage. The excellent weather conditions allowed us to line up optimally and carry out a good bomb drop. A few close Flak shots frightened Sgt. Jackson, who fell and hit his face, breaking his mandibular bone. Moving away from the drop zone, we were attacked by three Me-109s, two of which engaged in a dogfight with the escort fighters, the third, damaged, moved away without hitting us. We were then attacked by two Ju-88Cs and a Me-109; the latter and one of the two Junkers were busy defending themselves from our guardian angels, while the other Ju-88 was damaged and frightened and moved away without harming us. Zone 4 Inbound: We were attacked by two Me-109s and a Ju-88 in three successive waves, but none came to hit us because the escort engaged them and kept them away Zone 3 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 2 Inbound: We were attacked by three Fw-190s, but again the escort fighters played the game with them. Giulia Airbase: Soft and smooth landing. We entrusted Jackson to the doctor. It was nothing serious, he would just need to rest and eat soup and liquid foods for a while! --------------------------------------------------Clifford Morris, 1LT, USAAF commanding B-24J Chattanooga Choo Choo 78th (H) Bomb Squadron

With navigator transferred in Radio Room and autopilot system out, it was very hard to plan a correct path to the target, furthermore the smoke over it made everything harder. On the way back we were attacked by 5 Fw-190s, one of which tried with a VD maneuver to surprise us, but fortunately failed to hit us and moved away. We approached the target without any other problems, the Flak was quite inaccurate, I left the controls to the bomber, which, thanks in part to the clear skies, sent a hard blow for the Nazis. Zone 4 (Target Zone) Outbound/Inbound: Attacked by 2 Me-109s and 1 Fw-190. Only one Me-109 approached but did not hit us; the others were intercepted. No problem with the Flak; we reached the target by carrying out the bomb drop. Flak inoffensive but 3 Fw-190 attacked us: two were pushed away by P38s, the third was missed by our gunners, also missed us, but it was too close and probably the inexperienced pilot and collided with us directly at the nose compartment, destroying it. Probably the 2nd Lt. Flagg and Cooper died instantly; unfortunately in the impact Cooper's body must have fallen. We immediately got out of formation. Despite the damage we had, I was still able to pilot the ship. We were attacked by a lone Fw-190, but a P38 that had stayed with us took care of it. Zone 3 Inbound: Attacked by four Fw-190s: two of them were engaged by our escorting fighters while one was shot down by S/Sgt Phillips who centered it at the engine, blowing up the plane, no hope for the enemy pilot; the fourth Fw-190, although we had no machine guns to attack it, missed us and got away. Two more Me-109s tried to prevent us from returning to base: one was intercepted while S/Sgt Phillips took care of the second, with his accurate shots destroying the right wing causing the plane to dive, no one was spotted abandoning the dive plane. Zone 2 Inbound: Nothing to report. Giulia Airbase: Approaching the base we fired the red and yellow flares. Despite the damage the landing succeeded without difficulty. As we disembarked we observed the damage done: the nose of the ship was completely gone. The bomber emplacement was gone, and the now lifeless body of 2nd Lt Flagg was still in place: on impact the plates had trapped and completely broken his legs and feet; he must have bled to death within a short time. We returned to our quarters without a word; we had lost our ship, which can no longer be repaired, and two dear companions. --------------------------------------------------Clifford Morris, 1LT, USAAF commanding B-24J Chattanooga Choo Choo 78th (H) Bomb Squadron

Zone 9 Outbound: Attacked by Me-109 formation (4 A/C). Escort driven off 1 of them. Our artillery damaged 2 of them causing them to escape, while the third was shot down; some of the shots received irreparably damaged the rubber rafts. Attacked by 2 more Me-109s. One engaged and moved away from our escort, the second moved away after being damaged and missing us Zone 10 Outbound: Nothing to report Zone 11 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): Attacked by 1 Fw-190 and 1 Me-109. The last one was shot down with accurate shots to left wing (pilot chute spotted); . We missed the Fw-190, which managed to get close and fire a long burst toward us.The most serious damage was to the pilot compartment heating system (inop) and the serious injury of the co-pilot 2nd Lt Allen. As we tried to assist him, the Fw-190 made a second pass, but this time our shots went in, damaging him heavily and forcing him to abort the attack. In a quiet moment, Allen was carried and stabilized in the Radio room, while T/Sgt Vasquez took the seat near me and the Radio operator settled in the Top Turret. The sky began to fill with black explosions, a sign that the Flak defending Munich wanted to make life difficult for us. Fortunately, no shots did us any damage, and we were able to level the ship and drop the bombs in relative calm. Again Flak shots, again no damages. Just after putting the bow towards home, we were attacked in quick succession by: a- 1 Fw-190 and 1 Me-109, both of which did not hit us and moved away after sustaining some damage. b- 1 Fw-190 and 1 Me-109, the former was not hit by our machine gunners but fortunately his shots were also inaccurate and he decided to turn away; the Me-109, on the other hand, was hit in the tank and exploded, no salvation for the pilot. c- 3 Me-109s, all three fighters attacked us from direction 6: the closest one was hit and severely damaged and turned away without hitting us. the Me-109 at 6Low although damaged, managed to get close and fire accurate shots toward us (probably an Ace was on board), making both elevators no longer operational, irreparably damaging the radio and killing with a head shot the Ball gunner T/Sgt Wood. The last Me-109, at 6H, managed to avoid our shots and cause some superficial damage; encouraged by this he made a second pass, but this time he missed us and the damage we caused him forced him to abort the attack and move away. Zone 10 Inbound: The bleeding in 2nd Lt Allen's abdomen was under control. We gave him more morphine to keep him from feeling pain and to make him sleep for the many hours of flight still ahead of us. Zone 9 Inbound: We were forced out of formation and down to 10,000 feet because the temperature in the pilot compartment was starting to drop and the cold was getting unbearable Zone 8 Inbound: Nothing to report Zone 7 Inbound: Attacked by 4 Me-109: 1 intercepted, 1 damaged and 1 missed by us and missed us, they decided to abort the attack. Fourth attacker was shot down. It was not over yet, we were attacked by other fighters in two waves: a- 3 Me-109s: all three shot down with accurate shots by my crew. b- 3 Fw-190s and 1 Me-109: The 12H's Fw-190 missed us after we missed it and disappeared; the 9H's Fw-190 was damaged and broke off the attack after missing us; the Me-109 was missed by our gunners and caused us some superficial damage but was damaged by Tail guns during the passing shot. the Fw-190 at 3H, although damaged managed to hit us and cause us damage and, probably because of the damage it received to the ailerons was almost colliding with us. I think this frightened him so much that he stopped the attack and moved away Zone 6 Inbound: Nothing to report Zone 5 Inbound: 2 Me-109s approached: the first fighter was damaged and missed us, moving away; the second one although damaged, managed to hit us causing only superficial damage and then attempted a second pass, but the shots to the fuselage should have injured the pilot because his shots were inaccurate, after which he disappeared into the clouds. Zone 4 Inbound: coastal Flak, no damage sustained. Zone 3-2 Inbound: Nothing to report Airbase: Launched flares to report casualties on board. Landing safely. The runway doctor said that although Allen's injury was serious, the fact that he had not lost too much blood had saved him and that he would probably have to undergo surgery. The rest of the crew headed for their quarters, all of them without speaking, some smoking a cigarette, thinking of their two friends walking away in the ambulances. Personal Notes: it was a long and difficult mission, about 70% of the available shots were fired. -------------------------------------------------- Carl Cook, Capt., USAAF, Commanding B-17G: Faithfull Mary Jane B-17G-90BO-43-38619 80th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment Group 1-6wVn8QhUA

Sudbury Airbase: Takeoff and assembly was fine even if the weather was terrible. Zone 2 Outbound: Nothing to report Zone 3 Outbound: Just light coastal Flak when approaching Belgium coasts, but no damages occurred. Zone 4 Outbound: Nothing to report Zone 5a Outbound: Attacked by 2 Me-110 both driven off by our angels Zone 5b (Target Zone) Outbound/Inbound: Attacked by 2 Fw-190, one driven off by escort and the other walked away after not hitting each other. Flak was very inaccurate, allowing us to get to the target and drop the bombs without any problem. Good performance from 2nd Lt. Sudbury Airbase: Despite foggy weather takeoff and assembly was fine. Zone 2-6 Outbound: Nothing to report Zone 7 Outbound: Light coastal Flak but no damages occurred. Zone 8 Outbound: Four Me-109 attacked us. First one was driven off. Me-109 from 12H was damaged and moved away. The 10.30Lv one passed without hitting us or being hit and headed for other bombers. Me-109 from 12Low was destroyed by Ball guns that shredded its left wing (spotted the pilot bailing out) Zone 9 Outbound: First wave of 2 Me-109 on our ship but both were driven off. The next Ju-88 was also intercepted by the escort. We began to hear strange noises coming from engine #3 even though we were sure it had not been hit. After a few minutes the engine died and we were no longer able to restart it. Feathered propellers. We exited the formation as with the bomb load still on board we could not maintain our runway speed. Zone 10 Outbound: Attacked by one Me-109 and one Ju-88 both driven off from the escort. Zone 11 (Target Zone) Outbound/Inbound: Attacked by one Me-109 and one Me-110 both driven off from the escort. We were then attacked by 2 Fw-190s, a Me-109 and a Me-210. The first Fw-190 to approach was intercepted and driven away, the others were all damaged by our shots and moved away without causing any damage. But the GAF had not given up, we were attacked by 4 Me-109s: 2 were destroyed (both pilots probably KIA), the third one passed and got away without hitting us, while the last one managed to get through defensive fire and hit us permanently damaging the Norden bombsight the right waist gunner's heater and the tail gunner's O2. He returned to the attack but this time was hit and destroyed. More Jerrys on our way! 1 Me-109 and 2 Fw-190s. The Me-109 and rpth Fw-190 were hit and destroyed by our gunners, the third damaged one hit us causing only superficial damages. The Flak was heavy and accurate: some shrapnel put the navigator's O2 system out of commission. Without Norden bombsight and disturbed by GAF and Flak our bomb load was completely off target. On the return course again the Flak, which caused RW gunner Sgt Swanson to be light wounded in the forearm. It was then the turn of the enemy fighters. 1 Me-109 destroyed by the tail gunner's passing shot, while the 2 Fw-190s got away without hitting us and 1 Me-210 in vertical climb was intercepted. GAF against us again! 5 Fw-190s and one Me-109: 2 Fw-190s were intercepted by the escort before they approached, one got away without doing any damage. One Fw-190 was damaged and got away after causing us some superficial damage, while the last Fw-190 was shot down by Sgt. Pierce, tail gunner, who hit it in the fuselage causing damage and killing the pilot. While the 12Lv Me-109 after being missed by us, hit us on the left wing and came back to attack us from 12H, but was damaged and preferred to run away. Fortunately, our escorting "guardian angels" held off three other enemy planes that tried to attack us (1 Me-109, 1 Ju-88 and 1 Me-110). Zone 10 Inbound: Despite getting rid of the bomb load, we could not rejoin the formation because we descended >10,000 feet to avoid anoxya and frostbite problems for the crew. Observed a few puffs of black smoke from the Flak but no damage detected Zone 9 Inbound: Attacked by 3 Me-109s: two intercepted and one shot down. We were attacked by a second wave of 3 Me-109s: two shot down, while the third one overcame our defenses and hit us causing minor damage; it returned for a second attack to no avail and moved away Zone 8 Inbound: Jerrys on the attack again! Fortunately, one was intercepted and driven away, while one got away without hitting us; the third avoided our shots and hit us causing damage and seriously wounding LW gunner Sgt. Hook in the chest. In the return attack, however, he did not hit us and decided to move away from us. A Me-109 and an Fw-190 then arrived, the latter of which was immediately intercepted as it approached, while the Me-109 was hit on the right wing and crashed (spotted a parachute coming out of the cockpit). Zone 7 Inbound: In this area we still suffered many attacks from GAF. 1 Me-109 and 2 Ju-88 came to welcome us. The Me-109 was shot down by Sgt. Pierce's shots that ignited the fuel tanks and caused the aircraft (KIA pilot) to explode. The Ju-88s did not pose a problem as one was intercepted and the other caused no damage and got away. Another wave: one Me-109 and one Fw-190 shot down (both Luftwaffe pilots KIA), one Fw-190 damaged and one intercepted. Another wave: 1 Me-109 driven off, 1 Me-110 damaged and moved away after light damages on our ship. Last Me-110, missed by our gunners caused some damages to left wing root but it was destroyed on his return attack from 6Low. Another wave: 1 Fw-190 driven off. 1 Me-109 missed and caused some damages at our ship. He attacked us again but moved away after being damaged. Zone 6 Inbound: 1 Me-109 destroyed by tail gunner; 2 Fw-190 caused no damage and moved away. Zone 5-2 Inbound: Nothing to report Sudbury Airbase: Fired red and yellow flares approaching the base. The landing was smooth. Our wounded were immediately attended to by medics on the runway. Looking at the "Cookie" from the outside, it was clear that it had been a difficult mission. It would take a few days to get it operational again, but fortunately it brought us all home! --------------------------------------------------Leonard Blackburn, 1 LT, USAAF, Commanding B-24DJ: Cookie B24J-CF-42-64355 78th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment Group

Zone 9 Outbound: Attacked by a lone Fw-190, but escorting fighters did not allow it to approach, intercepting it. Zone 10 Outbound: A pair of Fw-190s attacked us head-on, but while the former was shot down, the latter engaged in a duel with the escort and was forced away Zone 11 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): Attacked as soon as you enter the target area. 2 Me-109s and 2 Me-110s but fortunately the two Me-109s and 1 Me-110 were intercepted by the escort. As we approached the target the Flak became very heavy but fortunately we suffered only minor superficial damage. We dropped the bomb load without disturbance. Reversing course for re-entry we found no GAF resistance and the Flak was also light and inaccurate. No damage was reported. Zone 10 Inbound: Light Flak resulted no damages reported. Zone 9 Inbound: Fighters removed a lone Fw-190 from our bow. after which we were attacked by a formation of 3 Me-110s. The first one to reach us was damaged and moved away without hitting us, the second one was intercepted while the third one attacked us with a vertical climb maneuver and although damaged managed to hit us rendering the Norden bombsight inoperable and killing S/Sgt Fawler with a head shot. Some rockets from aft exploded near us but without damage. Zone 8 Inbound: Attacked by 3 Me-109. The Jerry from 9H was destroyed as soon as in gunner range. Another one missed us and moved away and the last was driven off. Again rockets from aft but still no damage reported.
