To create a crew, simply make up names and assign them a position within the bomber. There are also many name generator websites that you can find online as well. Another option is to choose a crew from the spare pool, and using the rules posted there you request their permanent assignment to your bomber.
The ranks for a new crew that you generated are:
STARTING RANKS:
• Pilot = 1st Lieutenant
• Co-pilot, Navigator, & Bombardier = 2nd Lieutenant
• Engineer = roll a d6: 1 or 2 = S/SGT; 3 to 6 = T/SGT
• Radio Operator = roll a d6: 1 or 2 = SGT; 3 or 4 = S/SGT; 5 or 6 = T/SGT
• Gunner = roll a d6: 1 or 5 = SGT; 6 = S/SGT
At the beginning of the Air War, all crew were at a minimum the rank of Sergeant; as the Germans treated NCO prisoners better than Corporals or Privates. Sometimes a wayward Sergeant would lose a stripe and fly as a Corporal.
PROMOTIONS:
Officers receive a promotion after 20 missions.
Enlisted Men are eligible for promotion:
• At 10 missions, roll a d6; a 6 = only promotion for this tour earned, except for possible additional promotion in lieu of award.
• If not promoted at 10 missions, after 15 missions roll a d6. a 5 or 6 = only promotion for this tour earned.
• If not promoted earlier, after 20 missions roll a d6. A 1 = no promotion for this tour. Those drunken tirades and failed inspections are coming back to haunt that Crewman. A roll of 2 to 6 = promotion.
In your AAR for Promotions and Awards, please post what the result was, otherwise, your squadron CO/XO or Group CO/XO will post the results in the promotion thread. Historically, Promotions were not based on the number of missions flown. Years in service(tenure) was a factor along with rare promotions for an act of merit and promotions fill command positions which were vacated by someone killed or wounded. There were promotions for performing acts of merit, in lieu of an Award. You may decide to request such recognition in your game.
