1st Lt Barber, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #16 (Groups 82) Date: August 4th, 1944 Target: Peenemunde, Germany - V-Weapon sites (Part of operation Chrossbow) Plane: B-17G-797 "Kat-Astrophe" Position: HighCell / (#7 - Lead A/C) Altitude: 22,500feet 38x 100lbs AN-M30 General Purpose Mission Report C03M82 -797
O/B Zone 1-10: Take off today was marginally better as the weather over Sudbury was still poor. Still we were airborne on time and formed up with the Squadron and Group with little folly. As German resistance wasn't expected till we reached the coast our escort, 388th FS, 55th FG P-51'd, rendezvous around 300 miles out. What a beautiful sight it was. This was very fruitive since the Luftwaffe showed up right on time. First we encountered light and inaccurate flak as we crossed the coast, then the Jerry's right after. A Swarm of Bf 110C's came up to welcome us to Germany. Their attach was from head on with three bandits focusing on the "Kat-Astrophe." Their plans were quickly trashed, as our little friends jumped them sending one off smoking and chasing the other two away. about 50 miles later three Bf109f's swept in. The P-51's bounced two and Lt Lopez and Msgt Hanlon shredded the other one. Jerry's wing folded and the cockpit was shattered. Sgt Monroe watched it tumble till it entered lower clouds. North of Warnemünde we came across three waves of German fighters. First a Swarm of Butcherbirds swooped in. Our escorts dispatched two fighters and our boys took out the third. Sgt Dethlefs and Sgt Monrow filled his fuselage with 50cal lead. The plan just disintegrated and fluttered to earth. The second wave started their run but broke off for some unknown reason. ( Moderate Wave #41, none) Then the third wave of three Bf 109f's and a lone Me210. We saw one Bf109 brake off his run with two Mustangs hot on his tail. TSgt observed this fighter trying to out climb the P-51s spouting flames. The remaining fighters continued their frontal attack on the "Kat-Astrophe." the first from 12 o'clock low missed us. the bandit from 1:30 level pounded the nose killing Lt Lopez and wounding Lt Bullard. the second 12 low, a Me 210, hit us with no effect. One of the Bf 109's swung back for another frontal run. His shot was off the mark. As our bombardier was out of the fight we dropped back to let the deputy lead take over the bomb run. O/B Target Zone 11: Over the IP the Butcherbirds returned. Three of them turned towards our plane, but the 55th was there to thwart their intentions. Last we saw was the three Jerry's running for their lives from the P-51's. Flak was heavy and accurate. We took two hits one of which disabled our port flap. Lt Bullard did his best to toggle our eggs, but we misses the target miserably. I/B Target Zone 11: Flak on the backside of the target was again Heavy, yet less accurate. We took two hits again, one in the tail and one in the nose. The nose hit was minor. The tail hit damaged the control cables. Once the flak subsided all hell broke loose. The Luftwaffe overwhelmed our escorts with superiors numbers. Three large waves swarmed the group with three waves targeting the "Kat-Astrophe." Thankfully our escort were able to handle this and chased off three fighters, one Bf 109F and two FW 190D's. Then the second wave of four fighters came in right on the heals of the first. Two 109s were handled by our little friends leaving us a Bf 109 and a BF 110C. The 109 was destroyed by Sgt Monroe and Sgt Ventura. The tail section was observed falling away from the fighter. The 110 was a different story. He hit us hard with a 20mm shell destroying Lt Bullard's oxygen regulator. Bullard move into the vacated bombardier position where there was a working oxygen system. The last wave of three FW 190D's was reduced by two as the P-51's of the 388th FS escorted them back to their base. This rattled the last 190 as he made a halfhearted attack and booked it out of the fight. I/B Zone 10-1: As we turned for home three waves of German fighters. The first wave, with two Bf 109's and a lone FW 190, was chased off by our little friends. Quickly following this wave was a flight of three Bf 109's and a Bf 110. Again our escort drove off a few of the enemy leaving us to deal with only two bandits. Sgt. Monroe and Sgt. Dethlefs splashed the Bf 109 with T/Sgt. Hanlon and Sgt. Baker severely damaging the Bf 110. Even while smoking and spouting flames this Jerry was able to place a shot that took out Lt. Muncy's O². the Lieutenant move into the vacated nose plugging into that available oxygen regulator. Right behind these enemy fighters were three Butcherbirds. Two were chased off by the P-47's leaving one for our gunners. We mutually missed each other and the bandits were gone just as quickly as they had appeared. As we crossed the coast line the Huns flung up a meager flak barrage that had no effect on the " Kat-Astrophy." There was no activity till we passed over Maldorf. Here we Encountered a large flight of Bf 109's. One was shot down by a pair of P-47's, but four others concentrated on our ship. " Kat-Astrophy's" gunners were off their mark but the Germans weren't. Two of the four hit us hard. A Bf 109 dropped straight down of the " Kat-Astrophy" causing a oxygen fire in the cockpit, which was quickly put out. This resulted in the cockpit oxygen system failure on the flight deck. He also destroyed the fuel transfer system, radio and tail guns. Another Bf 109 came in from the front low with Sgt. Monroe taking a shot at the nimble fighter. One of the Fifties of Sgt. Monroe's Ball Turret guns jammed. Which couldn't be fixed. Both of the other bandits missed our ship and retired from the fight. Both the ones that peppered us swung around for a second go. One was severally damaged by Sgt. Monroe and Sgt. Dethlefs and the second one was nicked by T/Sgt. Hanlon. This caused both enemy fighters to miss their shots. Even though both were smoking, one with a white tail surface that had a multitude of hash marks, came back for a third run. Again Sgt. Monroe Ball Turret managed to hit him with his one remaining gun. Regardless the German was able to hit the bomb bay and the tail guns again. After this run the German broke off his attack. Lieutenant Muncy quickly calculated our chances to get back to base with the fuel we had in the fuel cells as we couldn't transfer any fuel to these cells now. He reported back that we had a chance to get back if we could lighten up the " Kat-Astrophy." As we dropped to ten thousand feet the crew tossed everything that wasn't bolted down or needed to fly the plane. Guns, busted radio, walk around oxygen bottles, clip boards, flak jackets, ammunition, medical kit, etc... This was the last wave of enemy fighters that made contact with our plane. Coastal flak tried to get us, but their aim was too high. Guess they weren't calibrated for a descending wounded bird. As stated, no enemy fighter attacked us after the last attack, but a lone Bf 109 came in our direction and was unceremoniously escorted out by a pair of P-51's from the 388th FS. Around half way over the North sea we began worrying about the fuel situation. The tanks were getting low and we were out of formation. Luckily we had Little Friends al but for a short time. Though at a critical point over the North Sea our Little Friends were nowhere to be seen. Around a hundred twenty miles from the English coast we were alone and starting to fly on fumes. About one hundred miles out we had to shut down and feather number two engine as it ran out of fuel. We dropped to about eight thousand feet as a result of the loss of engine two. I had everyone take up emergency water landing positions just incase we lost two more engines. Fifty miles out from the Dover coast a pair of P-47's heading home parked on our Port wing and Shepard us to our home base. Crossing the English coast at 1000ft we skimmed the country side all the way to Sudbury. By the time we lined up for our landing we were down to two engines. A tricky landing to be sure but we set down without incident. Seeing the red flares our base ambulances were Johnny on the spot. Once the wounded were gathered up they were sped off to the base hospital. 2Lt. Lopez didn't survive his wounds. 2nd Lt. Muncy and S/Sgt. Poole will recover from their minor wounds. Sgt. Dethlefs finished his tenth mission, qualifying for a star on his Air Medal. 1st Lt. Thomas BarberPilot of, " Kat-Astrophe" (B-17G-30-B0 42-31797) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 8th USAAF. O/B Zone 1-7: Take off today flawless with good weather over Sudbury. Formed up with the Squadron and Group on time. Met up with our escort, 63rd FS, 57th FG P-47's. Trip out was uneventful ti a 100 miles plus when a coastal flak sputtered up at us. Light and very inaccurate. One FW 190D swung in to attack, but was shot up by two P-47's. Last we saw of Jerry he was smoking and heading to the deck. As we approached the IP two Bf 100C's jumped us. One was driven off by an aggressive P-47. The other was chopped to pieces by Sgt. Monroe and Sgt. Dethlefs combined fire. O/B Target Zone 8: flak going in was moderate and accurate. We took a hit to the starboard wing, taking out the flap. 2Lt. Boothby First go at a target didn't go as planed as he was way off, 0% in the target zone. We will get him some extra practice on the target range. I/B Target Zone 8: We turned around for home with no flak on the back side. Also the Luftwaffe seemed to be confused (RE: #52 Bad Communication - Peckham's charts.) We encountered no Jerry's from her to base. I/B Zone 7-1: Weather was good at Sudbury and we came in with no issues. The " Kat-Astrophy" and her crew will be ready for the tomorrow's mission if any. 1st Lt. Thomas BarberPilot of, " Kat-Astrophe" (B-17G-30-B0 42-31797) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 8th USAAF. O/B Zone 1-7: Take off today was flawless. As we were briefed the Luftwaffe was off on a wild Goose chase for we never saw one bandit the whole trip. O/B Target Zone 8: Caught the gun crews napping as the flak was light and inaccurate. 2Lt. Boothby second go was much better. He placed 40% of our eggs across the runway with a few hitting an out building at the north end of the facility. Seems his extra practice paid off. I/B Target Zone 8: We turned around for home with light flak on the back side. Though this time they were better prepared. placing a few shells close enough to do damage to the "Kat-Astrophe" wing and waist. Again, the Luftwaffe was out to lunch. I/B Zone 7-1: On the way home we didn't see any enemy fighters. This gave us time to see what the noise during the bomb run was. Evidentially a few errant bombs raked the racks causing damage to what looked to be the release mechanisms. Weather was good at Sudbury and we came in with no issues. O/B Zone 1-8: Take off today was smooth. About half way out the Heated suit system faltered. But within minutes it came back on. (Mech Failure 03%, used Lady Luck #1 to reroll, then had to use a second, and last, Lady Luck as rolled 02% for re roll.) Shortly after this we picked up a squadron that attached itself to the 509th. (Peckham RE 54=Lost Squadron attaches to our Group.) Any enemy air activity was handled by our Little Friends. O/B Target Zone 9: Aerial bombs and Flak did the only real damage today on the way in. We placed 30% of our eggs in the target zone. I/B Target Zone 8: Turning for home the flak and Luftwaffe concentrated on other squadrons as we had clear skies.. I/B Zone 7-1: The way home was cleared of fighters by our fighters. Returned to base safely. 1st Lt. Thomas BarberPilot of, " Kat-Astrophe" (B-17G-30-B0 42-31797) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 8th USAAF. O/B Zone 1-5: Despite the poor weather, we got into the air without incident. After forming up the wing turned for Europe. Only event on our trip in was when two JU88's lined up on the 509th and lobbed aerial rockets into the group. Exploding below the formation, there was no noticeable damage to the group planes. Though our formation was disrupted till we could pull it back together. O/B Target Zone 6: Going in we took a single hit from Flak that just punctured a superficial hole in the rudder. Dropping on command we only placed 20% of our eggs in the target zone. I/B Target Zone 6: Turning for home the flak was light and inaccurate with nothing reached our ship . The Luftwaffe was waiting for us as we left the flak zone with a squadron of Bf 110C's. They attacked us with three of the bandit's turned on us. The first two were driven off, smoking, with four P-47's in tow. the one that got through was sent down in flames when Lt. Muncy and Sgt. Muncie combined their fire setting the port engine on fire. I/B Zone 5-1: The temperature out side was extremely cold, as our Guns suffered from the frost. One gun position, the radio rooms gun, suffered a complete failure after freezing up solid. Other than this it was a quiet trip home. We landed safely back at Sudbury. 1st Lt. Thomas BarberPilot of, " Kat-Astrophe" (B-17G-30-B0 42-31797) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 8th USAAF. O/B Zone 1-5: Despite the poor weather, we got into the air without incident. No activity till target. O/B Target Zone 6: As we entered the IP a tiny aircraft "Rocketed" up through the formation. The with the fighter arced around about 1000 feet above and descended straight down, in a vertical dive, on top of our plane. She opened up with what looked like large caliber rounds from its stubby wings. As the rounds hit the Tail section the pilot "Expertly" pulled the nose up ever so delicately to "Walk" his shots all the way up to the nose of our plane. When all was done our ship was riddled and three crewmen were wounded. I/B Target Zone 6: After putting our bomb on target, about 40%, we turned for home. Flak both inbound and outbound was light and inaccurate. Coming out of the flak we encountered a pair of Me 210's. One was chased off by the P-51's and one we damaged. It missed us and booked for home licking it's wounds. I/B Zone 5-1: The trip home after the Me 210's was quite. We landed safely back at Sudbury. 1st Lt. 1st Lt Barber, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #23 (Groups 89) Date: December 23rd, 1944 Target: Ehrang, Germany- Marshalling Yard Plane: B-17G-797 "Kat-Astrophe" Position: Middle Cell / (#6) Altitude: 26,000feet 18x 100lbs AN-M57 High Explosive & 2x 500 M17 Incendiary Mission Report C03M89 -797
O/B Zone 1-5: Again poor weather dogs us at Sudbury. As this is becoming common we handled it. No enemy activity till target. O/B Target Zone 6: One wave of butcherbirds attacked our group as we closed on the target zone. Two of these FW 109s targeted the " Kat-Astrophy" with no effect. Neither did we inflict any damage to these bandits. Flak was light and inaccurate as the weather effected the Germans ability to assertion our altitude. Our new Togglier was egger to prove this new system viability as he was " Johnny on the Spot" releasing our eggs. We estimate 94% of them splattered that target. I/B Target Zone 6: On our egress the Luftwaffe made multiple stand off "Rocket" attacks for the second mission. Two waves of FW 190s lined up, lobbing multiple volley's at the 79th Squadron. As they stood off quite a ways from the Squadron, all this achived was to disrupt our formations. The third wave sent up was another one of those devil Rocket Planes. This time though they had a Bf 109 loitering at our altitude. Apparently this was an effort to keep our fighter's from following the Rocket plane to its landing area. This didn't work well as two P-51s pounced on the Bf 109. Last we saw of this German it was in flames heading for the safety of a cloud bank. Our crew was rightfully anxious to see this rocket plane due to our last encounter with one on the prior trip. As we braced for its attack we were relived when this pilot miss judged his shot. Round after round flew past the plane as he was late pulling the trigger. We were over shot by at least 200 yards. Flak on the way home was just a poor as the outbound flak. I/B Zone 5-1: The trip home was as quiet as last missions was. We landed safely back at Sudbury even with the poor weather conditions. 1st Lt. Thomas BarberPilot of, " Kat-Astrophe" (B-17G-30-B0 42-31797) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 8th USAAF. Sudbury, England - Station 174 (Square [W])

O/B Zone 1-9: Even in the soupy English weather this time of the year we took off and formed up without incident. The only mishap on the way to the target was that Sgt Alvard's Chin turret stopped functioning for a few minutes. With some effort T/Sgt. Hanlon was able to get it back on line. O/B Target Zone 6: As we were lining up to drop our eggs a pair of German Schwalbe's attacked from the rear. One high and one level. The boys tried to line up a shot, but the Me 262's are just too fast. After three passes by the Jerry's we were lucky to only come away with a few holes in the bomber. After the last missions encounter with these birds everyone was on pins and needles. Once the Me 262's left we saw our little friends following them down. Maybe our fighter jockeys can get the as the Germans are landing. The target was again covered in thick clouds and Sgt Alvard toggled on command fo the PPF. I doubt we hit a thing. I/B Target Zone 6: Turning for home Sgt Alvard's Chin turret stopped functioning once again. This time T/Sgt. Hanlon was unable to get the contraption working. I/B Zone 5-1: After all his efforts to get Sgt. Alvard's guns working again, T/Sgt Hanlon's top turret stopped working. The gremlins were very busy on this mission. T/Sgt Hanlon was able to get his turret functioning after a bit. All over Germany we encountered light to medium flak. Yet only once were they in range to damage our ship. Half way home an errant flak burst came close enough to put a big hole in the belly just behind the ball turret. Everything was going fine till we were in sight of the English coast. This is when our number four engine's supercharger just caught fire out of the blue. It was a very tense time as we franticly worked to get this fire out. Thankfully Lt. Adolfson was able to get the extinguisher to put it out. He feathered the prop and shut the engine down for safe keeping. Even with one engine out our landing went smooth and we got "Kat-Astrophy" back to the hardstand. I will be having a long talk with S/Sgt. Capetti about all the Bull Sh!t that went array on this mission. Multiple malfunctions with major systems can be deadly on mission of any length much less so deep in Germany. Especially with the Chin Turret which we have had issues with on two previous missions. 1st Lt. Thomas BarberPilot of, " Kat-Astrophe" (B-17G-30-B0 42-31797) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 8th USAAF. Sudbury, England - Station 174 (Square [W]) Game Note: This is the second Bomber I have reached 25 mission with. The first one was many, many years ago playing B-17: Queen of the Skies. The "Little Miss-U" was my first ship. Now the "Kat-Astrophy" makes two. Both planes few under many of my variants and others variants. None of them make it easier to complete missions, though variants such as Fuel conservation and putting out fuel fires do help. In this case the Fuel conservation rules were used on one mission for the "Kat-Astrophy." As we are in Late war missions I will finish out this campaign with the "Kat-Astrophy" as we now need 30 missions to go home. Even with the 8th USAAF formula for grandfathered crews I want to get to 30 missions plus, if the Jerry's will let me.

1st Lt Horst, 78th BS Pilot MISSION #1 (Groups 3) Date: January 15th, 1944 Target: Perugia, Italy, Aerodrome Plane: B-24D-210 "Stupid Dragon" Position: Low Cell / (#04) Altitude: 20,000feet 12x 500lbs AN-M64 Fragmentation Bombs Mission Report C04M03 -210
O/B Zone 1-4: We finally got airborne and formed up on time. The Group turned for the target on as scheduled. We saw activity but nothing that effected our group. O/B Zone 5: As we approached the IP a swarm of Bf 109F's swung in. Two Jerry's focused on the " Stupid Dragon", but were bounced by our P-47 escorts. One P-47, from the 318th FS, separated the port wing from the German fighter. It tumbled out of control and we didn't not observer any chute. Then the flak opened up. Two burst were close but didn't do any damage. Yet, the third burst was closer and put a large hole in the Starboard wing. Gratefully this passed without hitting any vital bits. All our time training paid off as Lt. Hart placed at least 40% of our eggs on the target. I/B Zone 5: Coming off the drop, we were left alone by the fighters and there was no flak as briefed. I/B Zone 4-1: The only threat was driven off by Lt Garfield's crew in the " Laid Back Lady." We made it back in great shape. Even though the weather was less than exemplary, we managed to put the " Stupid Dragon" down without incident. 1st Lt. Moeses HorstPilot of, " Stupid Dragon" (B-24D-145-CO 42-41210) 78th BS, 509th BG(H), 15th USAAF. Foggia, Italy- Station 164 (Circle)

1st Lt Horst, 78th BS Pilot MISSION #5 (Groups 7) Date: February 7th, 1944 Target: Pontassive, Italy, Marshaling Yards Plane: B-24D-210 "Stupid Dragon" Position: High Cell / (#16) Altitude: 20,000feet 12x 500lbs AN-M64 Fragmentation Bombs Mission Report C04M07 -210
Zone 1-5 O/B: We met the new crew at our hardstand this morning. One guy we have seen around the base, a T/Sgt Salinas with Lt Desantis crew, and two new rookies. We were glade to have a Engineer with some experience. Our Take of and rendezvous with the squadron went off without incident. Cloud cover and just plane shitty weather seemed to keep the Luftwaffe grounded. Just prior to the IP our new guy on the left waist started calling out bandits on our nine o'clock. But this turned out to just be a new ship, Lt Llyod's plane, " T-TAILED BATHTUB", shadow in a cloud. Flak was light and very inaccurate today. Target Zone 6 O/B: Even with no flak our new guy on the Norton Sight had first mission jitters and was late dropping our load. With that said he did manage to get a couple eggs on the target. Disturbingly, one of our ships, Lt Harlow's crew in the "“ Kicking Horse”" went down in flames. Our crew witnessed nine chutes open. Target Zone 6 I/B: Flak and the Luftwaffe was basically none existent coming off the bomb run. just one flak shell come in our direction but was wide and out side the squadron cell. Captain Garfield's crew were on their game today. A swarm of Bf 109's came lazily in and his crew sent them all out of the battle. One squarely hit by their top guns fell out of the sky burning. Sgt. Salinas reported seeing this bandits right wing fold at around fifteen thousand feet. Lt Wilkins Tail and Ball gunners shredded a Bf 110C as it tried to lined up its shot. As the Zerstörer game apart under the "Black Maria's" fire Sgt. Perez saw two German chutes. Zone 5-1 I/B: As we reached the coast on egress we were attacked by two Rotte's lined up on the " Stupid Dragon." One FW 190A was driven off by a pair of Lightnings. The other three made attacks on our bomber. Two butcherbirds had highly decorated rudders. The one also had a device on the tail that looked like a laurel with a number 100 in the middle. The German was an expert (Peckhan's variant) at flying, pressing his attack from the front, getting so close that we could see this laurel up close. We just avoided being hit and this seemed to shake up the German as he broke-off his attack and went on for other pray. The other FW 190 with the decorated tail hit us in four places. One hit took out the waist oxygen system and another hit nicked the starboard aileron. On this Ace's second attack he missed us and moved on to his next target. This was the last of the German resistance, with he rest of the trip being uneventful. Weather was still crappy at base, though we were able to land without incident. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst

1st Lt Horst, 78th BS Pilot MISSION #6 (Groups 8) Date: February 11th, 1944 Target: Toulon, Italy - Harbor Facility Plane: B-24D-210 "Stupid Dragon" Position: High Cell / (#16) Altitude: 20,000feet 12x 500lbs AN-M64 Fragmentation Bombs Mission Report C04M08 -210
Zone 1-10 O/B: We were hit by the Luftwaffe immediately after we turned for the mission. These were extremely talented adversaries (2x Ace, 1x Experte') as the pressed their attacks even after taking damage that should have driven them off. We took mostly minor damage except for the Bomb Bay doors and the two waist gunners. We would find out over the target that the doors would not open, along with another issue. As for Sgt Brim and Sgt Freeland, the both took light wounds. Then as we crossed the coast we saw more bandits, but they ended up attacking the Bombardment Group that was following ours. This was a the last contact with the enemy till we reached the target. Target Zone 11 O/B: At the IP we were attacked by two waves of enemy fighters. The first wave consisted of two Me 210A's. One was chased off by the Spitfires and the second was damaged by Lt. Freeland and Sgt Paras. The second wave, of two Bf 109F's and a lone Me 210A. Again the 210 was chased off by the Spits, and Sgt. Wiman destroyed a Bf 109F. Lt. Scarbro and Sgt. Salinas combined to severally damage the remaining Bf 109F. Flak was moderate but very inaccurate with no burst close enough to cause damage. As I mentioned before our bomb bay door was jammed shut and we were unable to get them operating. So we decided to drop our eggs through the doors. This is when we realized the release mechanism was malfunctioning. (Mechanical roll #87) We decided to leave the formation to attempt to rectify this issue. After MSgt. Salinas messed with the release he was unable to fix it. Target Zone 11 I/B: On the egress and out of formation, we took the brunt of the Luftwaffe's attention. First we had three FW 190's target us. One was destroyed by the RAF with the other two pressing their attack. Their first pass caused very minor damage. As they came around for a second attack, MSgt. Salinas splashed one and Sgt. Wiman severally damaged the second one. Zone 10-1 I/B: Once over the Ligurian Sea there was a brief respite where MSgt. Salinas was able to free the Bombs and we dropped them through the bomb bay doors. Sgt. Wiman reported we killed hundreds of Fascists Fish. Yet immediately after the bomb situation was solved, we were then jumped by a wave of Bf 109F's. After three attacks we had damaged one bandit and they had only inflected minor damage. After this attack the Luftwaffe seemed to be confused. (Peckham Random Event; #52 "Bad Luftwaffe Communications") After this we saw no more enemy activity. Though we di witness that the Luftwaffe seem to get their act together as the preformed very coordinated attacks on the Group in front of us. (Peckham Random Event; #52 "Bad Luftwaffe Communications" again, canceling the RE.) Poor weather made our landing sketchy though we were able to land without incident. The wounded gunners should be back to duty in a few days to a week. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst

Zone 1-2 O/B: Heading to the target we had no enemy activity, but "Stupid Dragon" had another mechanical issue. About a hundred miles out we lost all control of the Ailerons. Target Zone 3 O/B: The Luftwaffe was up in force today. We were attacked by no less that ten mixed fighters. Bf 109's and Fw 109's. Our gunners nicked two and one FW 190 peppered us. Only damage was taking out Sgt. Sgt. Freeland's Heat. The second wave hit us prety hard as the Bf 109s took out the tail guns, the autopilot, navigator bomb controls, and our number three engine. We were able to down two hun and nick two others. As for our drop, it was miserably off target due to all the bombing gear that was destroyed. Target Zone 3 I/B: After the drop we turn into a swarm of mixed fighters. Bf 109's, Bf 110 and an Re.2005. Our boys were on their game as they downed five and damaging a sixth. With all the lead in the air the hun only scraped of paint from our bomber. Zone 2-1 I/B: From here on the skies were quiet. Landing was touchy with the number three engine out, but 2Lt. Mackoff and I managed to get " Stupid Dragon" on the ground without incident. I stopped by and the doc said Sgt. Plant will be fine after a week to recoup. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst

1st Lt Horst, 78th BS Pilot MISSION #9 (Groups 11) Date: February 22nd, 1944 Target: Regensburg, Germany - Aircraft Factories Plane: B-24D-210 "Stupid Dragon" Position: High Cell / TEC (#16) Altitude: 20,000feet 10x 500lbs AN-M64 Fragmentation Bombs Mission Report C04M11 -210
Zone 1-11 O/B: Heading to the target we ran into numerous waves of enemy fighter waves. Though the excellent escort support drove off all but four enemy. One wave saw two enemy fighters break through just to miss our ship. The next wave one of two JU 88s ligned up for a shot from the 4:30 Level just to be ripped apart by our guns. After clearing the Alps a wave of two FW190s made a run on the "Stupid Dragon" just to be damaged and running home with their tails between their landing gear. By the time we were near the target our Tail turret had ceased operating. Target Zone 12 O/B: When over the target the number four engine caught fire and was quickly extinguished. But the damage was done and we had to shut her down. Flak nicked our starboard wing for superficial damage. Due to this and the chaos of the attacking fighters our drop was well off the mark. Target Zone 12 I/B: Coming off the bomb run we made for home limping with one engine out. One more wave was driven off by our escort and we were clear to start for home. Zone 11-1 I/B: The only other activity we encountered was just prior to the Alps when a lone Butcherbird streaked through the group making a poor shot on us. He missed by a mile. Our tail gunner did just clip the Kraut tail as it passed by. Another nerve racking landing on three engines. Yet again we managed to get the "Dragon" home for another day. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst

Zone 1-5 O/B: All went well at the start of the mission with no activity on the way in. Target Zone 12 O/B: Flak was light and very inaccurate. Weather over the target was boxed in with clouds. Just before the lead ship called the bomb run there was a momentary opening and we all dropped on command. Best we could determine about 20% of our eggs hit the target zone. Target Zone 12 I/B: Turning back for home it looked as though the Germans were confused and disorganized. (RE: Bad Luftwaffe Communication). Zone 11-1 I/B: On the trip home not much happened till we neared Spoleto Italy. That is when we encountered two butcherbirds. One expertly maneuvered into two attacks. Luckily he wasn't too accurate, only causing light damage. After that we had an easy ride home. Landing went well even with the sloppy weather. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst

1st Lt Horst, 78th BS Pilot MISSION #11 (Groups 13) Date: March 11th, 1944 Target: Toulon, France - Submarine Repair Facilities' Plane: B-24D-210 "Stupid Dragon" Position: High Cell (#10) Altitude: 20,000feet 10x 500lbs AN-M64 Fragmentation Bombs Mission Report C04M13 -210
Zone 1-5 O/B: All went well at the start of the mission with our squadrons' bombers keeping a flight of enemy aircraft off our tail. Target Zone 12 O/B: We encountered two Bf 109F's and a Me 210A just prior to the IP. Our little Friends drove off one Bf 109 and the Me 210. Sgt Miholland and MSgt Pasiak destroyed the lone Bf 109. Flak was Moderate and inaccurate. Weather was patchy wit 5/10 cloud cover. Dropping on command we again placed about 20% of our eggs hit the target zone. Target Zone 12 I/B: Turning back for home the flak was the same as our ingress but much lighter. Though the Luftwaffe was more intense coming off the target. Two Bf 109F's came from the starboard side. The Hurricanes dispatched one and MSgt Pasiak and Sgt Freeland destroyed the other. Zone 11-1 I/B: About fifteen minutes after this we were approached by two more Bf 109F's. Sgt Wiman blew the port wing off this one with a concentrated hit. No chute was seen as the enemy fighter spun out of control. The other 109 missed us but, as it passed under the tail Sgt Perez was able to hit the fighter hard enough that is started to burn and was pouring out heavy black smoke as it hightailed it for the nearest cloud. After these attackers it was a fairly easy ride home. Two waves of Butcherbirds attacked as we approached the Italian coast. The first wave of three FW 109D's converged on the "Stupid Dragon" from all around. One was driven off by our P-47's and one was destroyed by Pasiak and Freeland. The last one missed us and flew off for another bomber in the 485th BG. The second wave came from above trying to make multiple vertical dive attacks. One was shot down by our P-47's as it was setting up to dive on us. The other was blown out of the skies from MSgt Pasiak's expert marksmanship! Pasiak was the hot gunner today by far. ( Ed Note: On this VD attack, Pasiak rolled back to back Box Cars to hit and destroy the Butcherbird.) Pairing up on two kills and this lone kill that most likely saved our ship from destruction. After this attack we were free to get home. Our landing was text book in the beautiful skies over Italy. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst

1st Lt Horst, 78th BS Pilot MISSION #12 (Groups 14) Date: March 15th, 1944 Target: Steyr, Austria - Ball Bearing Plant' Plane: B-24D-210 "Stupid Dragon" Position: Low Cell (#18) Altitude: 20,000feet 10x 500lbs AN-M64 Fragmentation Bombs Mission Report C04M14 -210
Zones 1-9 O/B: First two thirds of the flight outbound was quite. As we crossed the European coast about twenty or so enemy aircraft appeared. Mixed groups of Bf 109s, Bf 110s and Fockwolfs lined up to attack their respective groups. Being that we were wagging the squadrons tail, we had three fighters line up on us. Coming from both sides and the tail they swung in fast. Sgt Wiman and Sgt Milhollen teamed up to destroy the Bf 110 from the nine o'clock. Strikes were seen hitting around the cockpit and the post wing root. The Bf 110 was seen flopping on its back as plummeting into the channel around Vodice. The Bf 109 approaching from the starboard three o'clock level. TSgt Pasiak was late getting his guns around, but Sgt Freeland filled the engine area with .50 cal. The fighter was seen to smoke profusely and then burst into flames as it tried to disengage combat. The other Bf 109 was destroyed by the 49th fighter squadrons P-38. This wave was backed up by another wave of two FW 190's and a lone Bf 109. One Butcherbird was destroyed when TSgt Pasiak and Sgt Milhollen filled the 7:30 High ski with lead. The wings were seen folding up as the fighter tried to out maneuver the Bullitt steams. Lt Gustin winged the FW coming in from the twelve o'clock High. This must have disrupted his shot as the German missed us and dove out of the formation. That was the end of the attacks prior to the target. Target Zone 12 O/B: As we approached the IP there was a lot of enemy activity, but none of it came our way. ( ED Note: I rolled up a 16 [no attack], a 55 [no fighters] & a 66 [random Event]. Luck was with me today.) Flak was heavy and accurate of a heavy caliber. We took a shell in the cockpit that didn't explode (ED Note: This was rolled up as a BIP that I used my "Lady Luck Smiles" to re roll.) This was a harrowing experience to continue flying with a live shell just inches above your head for over two hours. There was also a near miss that did minor damage to the nose section. With all the commotion of this near disaster we were lucky to put any eggs in the target area, but managed placing 20% on target. One 1000lbs bomb was seen hitting an out building. Target Zone 12 I/B: Turning back for home the flak was less intense and less accurate. The " Stupid Dragon" didn't take anymore flak hit on the way out. We did encountered a wave of about five Bf 109s with two targeting our ship. The one from twelve level was missed by our gunners and he also missed us. The one from six low was destroyed by Sgt Wiman and Sgt Perez. Rounds were seen filling the cockpit till a fire broke out. This enemy fighter was witnessed tumbling to the ground. Zones 9-1 I/B: We didn't encounter any more attacks on the trip home. ( ED Note: At the coast we rolled up another RE, Expert Attack which wasn't activated during the rest of the mission.) Even with poor weather we place the "...Dragon" on the ground without incident. It was harry as we didn't know if that Flak shell would blow on touchdown. We pulled the bomber off the end of the runway to the left till the bomb squad hade time to defuse the shell. Hours later we were informed that the 88mm shell was missing its triggering fuse. There was a note inside the shell written in red lipstick, it simply said "Viva La France." Thank God for those forced into Labor! They have our back this time. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst

Zones 1-8 O/B: Take off was tricky with the poor weather, but with LT Mackoff's help we managed to get off the ground and assembled without incident. We didn't have any trouble till the coast when flak and two waves of enemy fighters came up to meet us. The Flak was very light and inaccurate. Both wave of fighters, two JU 88's and two Me 210's, were driven off by our little friends. Target Zone 9 O/B: Again over the IP and Target we skated through with the the help of the PP-38's and the Krauts inaccurate flak. Our bomb run was good with 30% of our bombs on target. Target Zone 9 I/B: Coming off the target we had a mechanical failure of in the ball turret. This rendered it nearly useless, Sgt Wiman had to operate it by hand. As if they knew we were hampered, the Luftwaffe pounced on the " Stupid Dragon." We were hit hard as a flight of Bf 109's attacked. Two were driven off, but one made two passes. hitting the wing and wounding Sgt Freeland. Upon his return our gunners teamed up to destroy the Hun. Zones 8-1 I/B: After a brief respite the Luftwaffe returned with massed attacks. First two swarms Bf 109s and a pair Me 210 ripped through our ranks. Two Bf 109s and a single Me 210 target our ship. the Me 210 causing multiple hits. Luckily our gunners damaf\ged all three enemy aircrafts forcing them to break off. Then a second flight of Bf 109s swooped in. This looked like the entire Geschwader was attacking us. Three Bf 109s sought out th " Stupid Dragon." One was destroyed and one was damaged. Though the one with a highly decorated tail hit us causing damage. On its return we our gunners sent it home smoking. Things were quite for awhile, but the two very skilled Butcherbird pilots worked us over. Making two passes they hit us for minor damage and then broke off. Though we must have hir one hard as it shortly flipped over and spun into the Sea. That was the last of the Luftwaffe. We made it back to base and landed in Good weather. Sgt Freeland will be out of action for near a month. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst
