By 1st Lt Paul E. Robbins, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #6/6 (Groups 47) Date: September 10th, 1943 Target: Salerno, Italy - Ground Support Plane: F-225 "Vengeance Queen" Position: Middle Cell / Lead (#1) Aircraft Altitude: 22,000 feet 12x General Purpose Mission Report C12M47-225
O/B Zone 1-8: No enemy activity out to the target, it was eerily quiet. O/B Target Zone 9: Flak was light and very inaccurate. With a free ride to the we were able to hit the target with about a fifth of our eggs hitting the intended target. I/B Target Zone 9: Flak was moderate coming off the drop and off target. But we found out why as the Luftwaffe hit us with force. Three waves of fighters hit us hard. They were a mixed bag of Bf 109s and Bf 100s. The first wave was five Bf 109s. One was driven off by our little friends. One from 12 o'clock high was destroyed by Lt Hellenbrook (confirmed.) A second Bf 109, flying trail to the first, hit us from 12 high. This hit was of a superficial nature and the the fighter continued on to the next bomber (TfT multiplyer (a)). One of these Bf 109s was Expertly handled (Peckhams Axis pilot experience variant) and came around for another two attacks. On his seconded pass he seriously injured Sgt Mullen's and hit out port wing root. His third pass Seriously wounded Lt Hallenbeck. The second was consisted of Bf 109s and Bf 110s. The lone 110 was destroyed by Sgt Fagen and Sgt Nattinger (not credited.) All the remaining fighters missed our bomber, yet again one Bf109 was expertly handled and came around for two more passes. Luckily all hits were of a superficial nature. The last wave had the same makeup as the second wave. Only one fighter hit us doing no significant damage (again, TfT multiplier (a)) and press his attack on to another bomber. Once more there seemed to be an Expert pilot (Peckhams Axis pilot experience variant) in a Bf 109 and even though he missed on his first pass he continued to swing around for consecutive attacks. His second attack took out the waist heat and damaged our port outboard fuel cell. He also killed Lt Flacke and Lightly wounded Sgt Nattinger. On the Germans third pass he missed and that was it for the target zone.
After we formed up and started out for home (Zone 8 I/B) a wave of two Butcher Birds (FW 190s) with a Bf 109 at 12 o'clock high dropped upon or ailing bomber. Sgt Kidd hit the Bf 109 and after the Germans half hearted attack it was seen leaving battle trailing thick smoke. One FW 190 missed us and the one from the 1:30 level, with many markings on the white rudder (Ace), hit us. Taking out the pilot compartment heat and seriously wounding Sgt Nattinger, which proved to be fatal due to the Sgt already being wounded. The Ace fighter came around for a second pass that did superficial damage after Sgt Kidd winged him causing minor damage. On his third pass Sgt Kidd and Sgt Shoemaker teamed up to down the German plane (later confirmed for partial credit.) That was the end of the Luftwaffe's attacks.
As the crew worked to manage the fuel leak it was determined to land in Tunisia as there wasn't enough fuel to make Maison Blanche.
I/B Zone 8-6: Enemy activity had stopped, but we had three wounded that needed attending to. Our landing went well with multiple flares being fired on approach.
It is though that Sgt Nattinger succumbed to his wounds as we were coming in to land. Sgt Mullen's was hit in the head causing a surface graze with a cracked temporal bone. The constant migraines has invalidated Sgt Mullens from combat. Lt Hallenbeck's was wounded in the Abdomen, causing inflamed intestines'. Lt Hallenbeck was released for duty on the 18th of September, in time for the La Spezia mission.

O /B Zone 1-6: No enemy activity out to the target, it was eerily quiet. O/B Target Zone 7: The Luftwaffe sent a single FW190 our way. This pilot handled his attack in an expert manner causing significant damage in three attacks. On his second pass he knocked out our Bomb controls, port aileron and wounded Sgt Shoemaker. Sgt Fagen was able to hit the fighter, but it didn't deter the pilots attacks. On the third attack he homed in his attack by taking out our starboard landing gear, tail turret guns and lightly wounding Sgt Fagan. Flak was Heavy and accurate. We took a few hits in the waist that caused minor damage and one fragment in the radio room that took out the radio. Even with the damaged bomb controls Lt Hallenbeck was able to get at least 30% of our bomb load in the target zone. I/B Target Zone 7: Flak was Light coming off the drop and off target. We didn't take any damage from these attacks. After the drop the bulk of the Luftwaffe attacks came as we egressed from the target. no less than nine fighters attacked us multiple times. Through this running fight the German fighters could only muster one hit of a superficial nature. Though our gunners made them pay dearly. First, MSgt Kidd and Sgt Shoemaker teamed up to down a Bf109G in the first wave. While Sgt Fagan and Sgt Baptiste combined their fire to down a second Bf109 in this wave. During the second wave our gunners damaged three of the Bf 109s and during the third wave the guys damaged two FW 190s and Sgt Fagan and Sgt Shoemaker worked together to send a FW190 down in flames. I/B Zone 6-1: Enemy activity stopped after the previous attacks. Our landing was a bit tricky with the starboard gear out, but we were able to touch down gently and placed the starboard wing tip down with minimal damage. Crew Chief SSgt Capettie believes he and his crew can have the " Vengeance Queen" up and running in six days.

By 1st Lt Christopher "Kitt" Bodle, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #2/2 (Groups 51) Date: November 15th, 1943 Target: Athens, Greece - Aerodromes at Eleusis Plane: F-079 "Kitt 'n' Kaboodle" Position: Lead Cell / Middle (#5) Aircraft Altitude: 26,000 feet 12x General Purpose Mission Report C12M51-079
O/B Zone 1-4: No enemy activity out to the target, it was eerily quiet. O/B Zone 5-6: This is where the enemy came up to greet us. We were first approached by two Me 210's that were quickly dispatched by four P-38's. a second wave of three Bf 109's made an effort to take us out. One enemy fighter was damaged by our escort, trailing smoke as he left the fight. The other two made attacks from the nose and tail. One from Twelve o'clock level missed us but turned back for a second attack. which cost him his life as Sgt. Bennett & Sgt. Kaye teamed up to splash him. The other Bf 109 took heavy damage from T/Sgt. Jefferies. After making a halfhearted shot this enemy fighter dove for the deck trailing heavy smoke and flames. There was a short break in the action till the next two waves appeared. The first was FW 190 with two Bf 109's. Our little friends sent one of the Bf 109's home trailing heavy smoke. The second Messerschmitt missed us and exited the fight. But the Butcherbird made good his attack. Peppering the ' KaBoodle across our center section. Thankfully only causing superficial damage. Upon the FW's next attack, he missed our plane. The second wave was a lone Bf 109 that broke from a group attacking the 80th BS. This was his mistake as two P-38's latched on to his tail and last we saw the three were making for the deck with our boys blasting away. O/B Target Zone 7: In the target zone we were met by a quartet of FW 190s. Our P-38's took one out of the fray. The other three pressed their attack hard. On the first pass, one was destroyed by S/Sgt. Eastwood, but the other two hit us. The FW from the tail level peppered the tail with one shell sending shrapnel into S/Sgt. Tolliver's arm. The other 190 just caused minor damage and left the battle. The FW 190 that wounded Tolliver came back around twice causing only holes in none-critical areas. I/B Target Zone 7: The Flak prior to the drop point was medium but accurate, hitting our Port wing spar. Causing 20% damage to the wing root. Approaching the drop point Lt Ford was on again. He placed 30% within the target area. On the back side of the target the flak was still medium but less accurate. We took no damage from this volley of 88 and 120 shells. On the way out the Luftwaffe formed up for an aggressive attack. A wave of FW 190's swung our way. One was destroyed by Sgt. Bennett. The last one hit us hard. Taking out our port elevator. During his two successive attacks he hit our port elevator root. I/B Zone 6-1: As we made the next zone the Luftwaffe threw three Bf 109's our way. One was chased off by our escort. We damage two as they made their attacks that missed our plane. Though on the one that attacked from the front was destroyed from S/Sgt. Tolliver's quick reaction as it passed under and to the rear of the ' KaBoodle. In zone 5 we saw a lot of enemy activity but none of it was directed our way. We did observe 1LT Dean's ship " Deanie Weenie" drop out of formation. His crew was flying Tail end, so we slipped into that position to protect the rear of our squadron. Luckily for us there was no more enemy activity for the trip home. 1st Lt Christopher Bodle, Commander Pilot of, "Kitt 'n' Kaboodle" (B-17-F-45-Ve 42-6079) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 15th USAAF 15th USAAF Giulia, Foggia, Italy

O/B Zone 1-6: From about 150 miles out of Foggia we were intercepted by Bf 109s and FW 190s. Our escort delt with one Bf 109 and our boys damaged the rest, with one Messerschmitt going down to Lt. Ford & S/Sgt. Eastwood's guns. Two FW's manage to hit us on their first pass, but missed our plane with their second pass. after these attacks it was quite up until the IP. O/B Target Zone 7: Approaching the IP we saw no less than eight 109s and 190s. Three enemy aircraft were either chased off or destroyed by our little friends. Our gunners damaged four and destroyed one Bf 109. None of the enemy fighters hit our ship. But the flak was another story. One burst was close enough to pepper the KaBoodle. this burst severely wounded Sgt. Overall and knocked out the port cheek gun. Even with all this chaos Lt. Ford was still able to place 30% of our bombs a top of the East Sub pen complex. I/B Target Zone 7: Flak was concentrating on other groups, fall short of hitting our ship. The Luftwaffe was waiting for us as we formed up for the trip home. Two waves made attacks, FW109s with Me410s and another group of FW's respectively. The first wave was intercepted by our P-38s, driving off the two "Hornisse," leaving two butcherbirds for our gunners. Which damaged one 190. In the second wave the escort took one FW 190 out of the fight and our gunners damaged three of the FW 109s. Though there was one enemy fighter that pressed his attacks expertly. Hitting our plan twice out of his three attacks. Coming from the six o'clock all three times plastered the tail and waist hard. Wounding Sgt. Workman twice killing him outright. I/B Zone 6-1: right after leaving the target zone a flight of Me210 B's approached the "Kitt 'n' KaBoodle." Our P-38s drove two of them away and Sgt Eastwood blew the S#!t out of the Messerschmitt. After this attack our flight home was quiet. We made a good landing with the rest of the squadron and got medical attention for our wounded. Sgt. Wallace Overall succumb to his wounds and Sgt. Kamil Kaye had no chance due to him multiple wounds. 1st Lt Christopher Bodle, CommanderPilot of, "Kitt 'n' Kaboodle" (B-17-F-45-Ve 42-6079) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 15th USAAF 15th USAAF Giulia, Foggia, Italy

I/B Target Zone 6: Again flak was inaccurate, The luftwaffe was standing off lobbing rockets in the direction of the group. This also proved inaccurate and missed our ship. I/B Zone 5-1: For the next 45 minutes we were in a lackadaisical fight with a flight of Bf109s. Even so one German pilot expertly hit us knocking out radio room oxygen. This caused a fire that was quickly put out with one extinguisher. O/B Zone 1-5: The only contact with the Luftwaffe was a lone Bf 109 halfway to the target. S/Sgt Eastwood splashed the German on his first pass. O/B Target Zone 6: Our escort chased off a lone FW 190 over the I/P. Flak was light and inaccurate. We were able to get 20% of our bomb in the target zone. I/B Target Zone 6: No flak on the back side. The Luftwaffe put up a flight of Butcherbirds. Two of the FW 190 target our ship, but one of the Germans was driven off by our P-38's. The other enemy fighter was destroyed by the concentrated fire from three of our boys, S/Sgt Eastwood, Sgt Jefferies and Sgt Tolliver. I/B Zone 5-1: On the return trip our group was again approached, mid way home, by a large flight of FW 190's. This time four Butcher Birds came our way. One fighter was downed by our little friends with two others missing us altogether. This left one Butcherbird that made two runs on the " KaBoodle." After all is said and done we took one superficial hit to the port tail surface. But the German received the worst of it as he broke off trailing heavy white smoke. This attack was the last we say now it was clear sailing to base. With crappy weather over the base it was very tricky to bring the big bird in, yet Lt Stevenson and I were able to make a decent landing. 1st Lt Christopher Bodle, CommanderPilot of, " Kitt "n" KaBoodle" (B-17F-45-VE 42-6079) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 15th USAAF 15th USAAF Giulia, Foggia, Italy

Gerald Stevenson (79th BS Copilot) for 1st Lt Christopher "Kitt" Bodle, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #7/8(Groups 57) Date: December 19th, 1943 Target: Agsburg, Germany - Aircraft Manufacturing Plane: F-079 "Kitt "n" KaBoodle" Position: Lead Cell / Middle (#4) Altitude: 26,000 feet 12x 500lbs AM-N64 General Purpose Mission Report C12M57-079
O/B Zone 1-6: We were harassed most of the way to the target. Lt Black and SSgt Eastwood teamed up to down a FW190 as the bastard peppered the cockpit, severely wounding Lt Bodle. Just before the target zone we were hit by a flight of butcherbirds that seriously wounded Kitt. Eastwood moved him to the waist and took the left seat. Sgt Hellenbeck moved from the port waist to the top turret. O/B Target Zone 7: As the flak opened up we took a hit in the nose, lightly wounding both Lt. Burrnett and Lt. Black. Even with the distraction off his wound Lt Black was still able to hit the target with about 20% landing inside the zone. I/B Target Zone 7: Coming off the drop we were nicked by flak in the tail. This just punctured the tail wing no effect. I/B Zone 6-1: As the trip in, we had to fight our way out as the Luftwaffe was in wait for our Group. Three main attacks dogged us till we were almost home. The boys did very well beating off the Jerry's, with our gunners downing a further three aircraft. Two Bf 110C's and a Bf 109F. The weather at the base didn't cooperated as the field was socked in with rain and fog. But, SSgt Eastwood was superb on the stick, helping me put the " Kit 'n' KaBoodle" down safely. The Ambulance was waiting for us to roll to a stop and rushed our wounded to the infirmary. After the briefing I bee lined it to the hospital and waited for Kitt to get out of surgery. The Doc says Kitt will survive, but his flying days are done. That evening Major Tolliver called me to his office to see how Kitt was and inform me that I would be taking over the " Kitt 'n' KaBoodle" as its Commander. the Major also said he would request a set of silver bars for me. 2nd Lt. Gerald Stevenson, CopilotPilot of, " Kitt "n" KaBoodle" (B-17F-45-VE 42-6079) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 15th USAAF Giulia, Foggia, Italy

1st Lt Gerald Stevenson, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #8/9 (Groups 58) Date: January 10th, 1944 Target: Skopje, Yugoslavia - Airfields/Marshalling Yards Plane: F-079 "Kitt "n" KaBoodle" Position: Low Cell / Middle (#16) Altitude: 24,000 feet 12x 500lbs AM-N64 General Purpose Mission Report C12M58-079
O/B Zone 1-2: As soon as we turned towards Yugoslavia a flight of Butcherbirds swooped in on us. One of the three FW190's was seen running from one of our P-38 escorts. The other two bore down on our ship. Both cam in directly from the front, one low and one level. Our guns missed the two bandits, but the FW 190 from the level, hit us in the cockpit area. With lead flying around Lt. Hall and my head we quickly noticed the oxygen waning. As well, S/Sgt Eastwood went silent. This German wheeled around to make a second pass. Without hearing the sledgehammering of SSgt Eastwood guns, that only left Lt Black to get off a shot, he missed. As did the FW 190. Yet, SSgt Tolliver filled the Boche's cockpit with hot lead. The German was seen rolling over and plummeting to his death. As we assessed our damage TSgt Waltherson informed us that SSgt Eastwood had passed. It was also observed that the whole oxygen system was compromised. Even though it was calculated we had enough for the mission we would still need to drop to ten-thousand feet as the whole cockpit system was out due to the fire that Lt Hall put out. It was then decided to abort the mission. Eastwood was moved to the radio room and Sgt Hallenbeck again took up the Top turret. I/B Zone 2-1: Supprizingly the Luftwaffe left us alone on the quick hop back to base.. 1st Lt. O/B Zone 1-4: Takeoff and assembly went off with out a hitch. As we slotted into the Deputy Lead spot, just behind the " BATTLE OF CULLODEN," we noticed just how ominous the YB-40 really looked. This was the first time we were this close to her in the air. Our anticipation was high for when LT Knox's crew would give way to our first Lead over the target. But we had to fly the gauntlet of German fighters first. Surprisingly the only enemy fighters we saw gave us wide birth as they seemed to turn off from the YB-40. The only scare for us was when we were hit by a fragment of flak that went through a fuel cell in our port wing. Luckily it self sealed itself and we were able to continue. O/B Target Zone 5: As Knox's ship gave way to the " Kitt 'n' KaBoodle" we slipped into the Lead position and Lt. Black guided the Bombardment Group over the target. Though nerves, and the flak hit, got to the lieutenant and we figure only around 20% of our eggs hit the target. O/B Target Zone 5: After the drop we turned for home and the Luftwaffe was waiting as our bodyguard was already dropping back from the squadron. The loss of the gunship turned out to be our demise. First a pair of Bf109G's came in from the front. Our escort chased of one and Sgt Tolliver shot down the second was as it passed over our plane. Then a flight of FW 190D's came in from all around. One their first pass we nicked two of them and the escort took one out. Yet one expertly came back around twice and on his last pass he walked his shot from nose to tail. Knocking out our oxygen in the pilot compartment, causing a fire and knocking out the oxygen in the compartment. Lt Hall took care of the fire and we had to relinquish the lead to drop to a lower altitude. I/B Zone 4-1: The Luftwaffe left us alone after that. Leaving us to make it back to base. Our three wounded had a visit to the base hospital. They were all released over the next three days. Lt. Hallenbeck's serious wound ended up being a bad hit to the head that knocked him out, but Doc said he would recover from it in a few days. 1st Lt Gerald Stevenson, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #10/11 (Groups 59) Date: January 27th, 1944 Target: Istres, France- Aerodrome Plane: F-079 "Kitt "n" KaBoodle" Position: Low Cell / Middle (#15) Altitude: 24,500 feet 12x 500lbs AM-N64 General Purpose Mission Report C12M60-079
O/B Zone 1-7: Takeoff and assembly went off well. We slotted in the to the right of Deputy Lead spot, the " SV." around 100 miles out from base a squadron of Gustav's lined up to strike the 79th. As they split up to attack their chosen bombers one approached our ship. As he bore down on the "Kitt-n-KaBoodle" a pair of P-38's bounced the Hun. Just prior to the target area there was a lot of enemy activity though none of it was directed at our plane. O/B Target Zone 8: Just as we were preparing to cross the IP a flight of three FW 190's jumped us. On their first pass our gunners gave them hell. S/Sgt Rabb severely damaged the one attacking the starboard side. Then Sgt Tolliver sent another, attacking our tail, to his death. Even though the one Rabb hit was trailing smoke and flames, he raked our port wing and nose. The Hun took out the number two engine and our nose oxygen system. This caused a fire that Lt Burnett quickly put out. Another Butcherbird walked his hits from nose to tail. He took out Sgt Workman's heat out and seriously wounded Lt Black. On this second FW 190s attack he pelted us once again even though Sgt Bennett hit hit causing smoke and a flicker of flame. This Hun took out both top turret guns and tail guns while also critically wounding Sgt Workman and T/Sgt Walterson. He also destroyed our radio in this pass. This tenacious enemy pilot even came around for a third pass. Luckily he missed his mark. With Lt Black down and Lt Burnett busy with the fire I just toggled the bombs remotely which were obviously well off target. We observed about twenty to thirty cows and two horses go up in smoke. Thank God the flak was inaccurate and we took no damage on the way in or out. O/B Target Zone 8: Due to the loss of oxygen in the nose and Sgt Workmans heat being out, we had to drop to 10,000 feet. Thankfully there were no enemy to attack us. I/B Zone 7-1: For the next two hundred miles we saw enemy fighters all around, but they were more interested in the formation of bomber that one lone straggler. It wasn't till about a hundred miles from base that trio of FW 190's hit us. They made three attacks with mostly superficial damage. Yet on their last attack the Norton sight was destroyed and our starboard outboard fuel tank was hit. Thankfully it quickly self sealed. I was also lightly wounded. We went on to landed with no further contact from the enemy. As our flares arced down we saw multiple ambulances heading our way. They rushed our wounded off to the field hospital. Later that in the day we found out that both Lt Black and Sgt Workman succumb to their wounds and passed. TSgt Waltherson's wounds were bad, but Doc said he would recover in about six weeks. The wound to my thigh was stitched up and Doc told me to stay off my feet for three days. That evening, at the O-Club, we learned of Lt Smith's crew in ' THE' "Screamin’ Buckeyes." It seems, after scoring a big Goose Egg on the target, they were beaten up by a Bf 109F with Maze and Blue vertical stripes and a Big number 10 on the fuselage. This enemy pilot was thought to be a Champion as he had a rudder full of Victors markings. we were told that Lt. Smith's plane was in trouble as the N° Four engine took to running away, Lt Smith's team had to bailout of the Fight. ( sorry wolverinetoddy , after 10 long years I just had to) 1st Lt. O/B Zone 1-4: Takeoff and assembly went off well. No enemy fighters to report. O/B Target Zone 5: We encountered two JU88's. One damaged and one destroyed. Flak missed us, Lt. Neilsen was seriously wounded so our bomb run was off. O/B Target Zone 5: Flak missed us, but we were attacked by two waves of fighters. Three wave of fighters, one of Bf110C's and two FW 190's. The first wave our fighters drove off one of three Bf110, with the other two being destroyed. Second was was a lone FW190 also driven off by our little friends. The last wave saw one FW190 attack and miss. I/B Zone 4-1: We saw a flight of FW190's sizing up the 509th BG, but none attacked our plane. The second wave was a single FW190 that we hit causing the German to miss our plane. A third wave came with three FW190s. We damaged all three yet one was able to hit our plane. This hit caused our number four engine to smoke with no performance loss. This fighter, smoking himself, came around for another attack. We both missed our mark with this fighter moving on home. Later that in the day we learned that Lt Colt K. Neilsen took a shell to the abdomen and will be out for ten weeks. Returning on the 12th of April. 1st Lt. O/B Zone 1-6: Takeoff and assembly went off well. No enemy fighters to report to the target. O/B Target Zone 7: Fighters showed up as we made the IP. Three Bf 109F's came at us from the front and tail. The first Bf 109 came from 12 o'clock low. Sgt. Bennett placed his shot to the engine causing smoke. This fighter missed our plane and broke off his attack. The other two came from 6 o'clock high, line abreast. Sgt. S. Rabb destroyed the one on the port and T/Sgt Waltherson destroyed the one on the starboard side. Flak was moderate and inaccurate. Bomb drop went extremely well with an estimated 86% on target. O/B Target Zone 7: Light Flak was light inaccurate missing us by a mile. But, waiting for us was a swarm of Butcherbirds. Our little friends drove two FW 190's off, leaving two FW 190's and a Bf 109 to deal with. One FW 190 was destroyed by the combined fire of Sgt. L. Bennett and Sgt. J. Hallenbeck. This fighter went down in flames. T/Sgt K. Waltherson took care of the lone Bf 109 by filling up the cockpit with lead. This fighter rolled over and dropped to the ground. The lone remaining FW 190 pressed its attack, placing his hits port wing and radio room. Both hits just pierced the outer skin for no significant damage. Flak was light and very inaccurate. I/B Zone 6-1: We encountered two Bf 109s as we headed over the Mediterranean. The Bf 109 attacking from the 6 o'clock high was severely damaged by T/Sgt Waltherson and S/Sgt Tolliver. The Hun was last seen running for the clouds after making a weak pass that totally missed our ship. The other Messerschmitt made a half hearted frontal level attack, that missed, following his wingman into the clouds. This was last enemy attack for the mission. Back at Giulia we Landed without incident. 1st Lt. Gerald StevensonPilot of, " Kitt "n" KaBoodle" (B-17F-45-VE 42-6079) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 15th USAAF Giulia, Foggia, Italy

O/B Zone 1-5: Takeoff and assembly went off well. No enemy fighters till just prior to the target zone. We encountered two waves of FW 109s with seven total attacking us. Our gunners damaged five and destroyed one butcherbirds. The only major damage was the loss of the ball turret guns, port landing gear and our port aileron was knocked out too. O/B Target Zone 6: Fighters showed up again with one wave of five FW190's. Three were driven off by our little friends. We damaged one on its first second attack. The flak was light and very inaccurate causing no problems. We put around 20% of our eggs across the rail tracks. O/B Target Zone 6: More accurate Light Flak on the back side, inflicting just one minor hit. On the way out the Luftwaffe came at us in force. Three waves of fighters were waiting with malicious intent. The first wave was five FW190s. We damaged one and they wounded the Navigator, Ball gunner and tail gunner as well as taking out the radio, starboard brakes and damaging the tail oxygen system. The next wave was a flight of three BF 109F's with two being driven off by a flight of P-38s. We severely damaged one and knocked down one on its second attack. Their attack took out the rafts and wounded our bombardier and tail gunner again. A third set of Bf 109F's made an attempt to attack us from the rear but were thwarted bt our escort. I/B Zone 5-1: We encountered one JU88 half way home. Our engineer took care of this one sending it down in flames. This was last enemy attack for the mission. Back at Giulia our landing was most eventful as our port gear was out and the starboard brakes were gone too. But We were able to touch down on one wheel in the grass adjacent to the runway. as we slowed we placed the port wing as gently as posable down. Luckily we were able to prevent a ground loop to save the plane. This damage was about 30% of all the damage we sustained on the mission. Our ground crew figures that the "Kitt 'n' KaBoodle" will be air worthy by the 5th of April. 1st Lt. Gerald StevensonPilot of, " Kitt "n" KaBoodle" (B-17F-45-VE 42-6079) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 15th USAAF Giulia, Foggia, Italy Mission Note: Used Lady Luck to change Wing Fuel tank hit to Landing gear hit over the target. I have been using the Peckham point system and the 281st BG repair table for the repairs of my planes. So, I didn't use the TfT roll for plane statues for landing gear out, but I used these house rules to replaces it.

O/B Zone 1-4: Takeoff and assembly went off well. No enemy fighters till just prior to the IP. O/B Target Zone 5: One flight of four FW 190's attacked our plane. Two FW 190s were driven off by our little friends. Leaving two Butcherbirds to attack. Both our guns and the Germans guns missed their marks. The flak was light and very inaccurate causing no problems. We placed 50% of our eggs across the rail yard. O/B Target Zone 5: Flak was negligible. We also didn't attract any enemy fighter after the target. I/B Zone 4-1: The trip home was quiet and uneventful. We landed without indecent. 1st Lt. 2nd Lt Gerald Stevenson, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #4/5 (Groups 70) Date: May 13th, 1944 Target: 'Ploesti Romani - Spreantza Oil Refinery Plane: B-17G-797 "Kitt "n" KaBoodle" Position: Middle Cell / Lead(#1) Altitude: 25,000 feet 12x 500lbs AN-M69 General Purpose Mission Report C12M70 -797
O/B Zone 1-7: Takeoff and assembly went off well. We had the Tuskegee Red Tails join us in Zone 4 outbound today. The only enemy fighters we saw were attacking other squadrons in the group. we did see the Red Tails chasing off three Bf 109s attacking the 80th Squadron. O/B Target Zone 8: Two waves of Bf 109s attacked going into the IP. In wave one Sgt. Hanlon was able to damage the lead fighter, of two, coming in from the front. The second enemy aircraft was driven off by a P-51B (tail n° 43-7024) of the 2nd FS/52nd FG. The second wave consisted of four Bf 109s. One was destroyed by a P-51B (tail n° 42-106581) from the 2nd FS/52nd FG. Our boys took out two of the enemy fighters with the last one missed us and moved on. Flak was negligible on the way in. Our Bomb run produced 20% of our bombs across on the oil fields. O/B Target Zone 8: Flak was again negligible. Once out of the flak field we ran straight into large flight of Butcherbirds. Three of the FW 190's picked our plane out. With the bulk of the enemy attacking other squadrons we had now support from the 52nf FG. Two FW 190s came in from twelve o'clock. Our boys missed these two, but the Germans lambasted our ship. We lost oxygen in the nose as well as the interphone and radio. The controls went soft due to multiple control cable hits. Tail and starboard waist guns were destroyed. Even the pilot side window was blown out. One their second pass we missed them but one FW190 knocked out S/Sgt. Poole's heat. After they left we had to drop out of formation, but with out a radio all we could do was wiggle out wings good buy. I/B Zone 7-1: We leveled out at nine thousand feet and made for home. Flak kept coming up at us but none hit the ship till zone 4. Our port wing took two hits, one to the root and one to the outboard fuel cell. The fuel cell quickly self sealed, thank God. This did attract the attention of a flight of Me 109's. Four of them made three passes at us before running out of ammo. In the exchange T/Sgt. Hanlon downed one on its first pass. Yet, after that we missed hitting any of the Germans. Though one of their boys did minor damage to the nose. After this encounter we took one fragment from flak, in zone three, to the nose heating system. 1st Lt. * Campaign Note: Due to life events and work load I have only been able to fly the previous four missions, but not write up my AAR's. I have created a brief summery of the missions in my Tarmac space to confirm my changes to this current AAR crew updates. I am truly sorry for any inconveniences this may cause to the flow of our campaign. -- Pg 1 --

2nd Lt Gerald Stevenson, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #10 (Groups 76) Date: June 26h, 1944 Target: Caen, France - Bridge Plane: B-17G-797 "Kat-Astrophe" Position: High Cell / (#10) Altitude: 16,500 feet 12x 500lbs AN-M64 General Purpose and 2x 1000lbs AN-M65 General Purpose Mission Report C03M76 -797
O/B Zone 1-6a: Take off was a dicey event with the poor weather, but we managed to get aloft without incident. As we took the long rout out of England, taking a southwardly path, till we reached the Chanel then a Hard Left to France. As we approached the French coast the clouds cleared enough for our crew to see a mind numbing sight. A mass of ships like never before seen. There were ships everywhere alone the Normandie coast. As we got back to business from our amazement of the armada, we went on oxygen as we started our climbed to bombing height. As we came closer to the Target, about 150miles out, the Luftwaffe decided to challenge our presents. A wave of Bf 109s Locked on Lt Dan Shantz's craft, "Viscous Vixen" but were thwarted by a flight of P-47's. None of the Enemy fighters got close to our ships. A second Wave came in right behind the first wave. Of the three Bf 109's that targeted our plane only one made it through the fighter cover. This bandit closed from 12 o'clock level. our first attempt to shoot the Hun down was for not. As well as the Germans attack. His shots were wide to the port. Though SSgt Tolliver almost pick him off as he passed under our plane. SSgt Tolliver reported that the Bf 109 immediately headed for Mother Earth trailing smoky flames. O/B Target Zone 6b: We had three waves of Krauts as a reception committee just prior to the IP. The first wave of three Bf 110's attacked with limited escort intervention. With only a pair of P-47's near by our boys had to step it up their game, and that they did. With one Bf 110 leaving the battle trailed by our two little Friends, SSgt Tolliver wrecked havoc to the Bf 110 attacking from six o'clock level. This plane made a half hearted shot that went low and then made a hasty exit with one engine in flames. Then Lt Lopez and TSgt Hanlon ganged up on the a Bf 110 lining up at one-thirty o'clock high. rounds were seen filling the cockpit, flipping the plan over into an uncontrolled spin. Next in line to attack were a swarm of FW 190. Our gunners sent three of them home trailing smoke. with the fourth Hun also missing the "Kat-Asthophe. the last wave was a lone Butcherbird. As he lined up for a head-on shot, again Lt Lopez and TSgt Hanlon combined their marksmanship to send another enemy craft of destruction to its early death. The engine blowup on the FW 190 sending debris every ware. Flack was moderate and very inaccurate. With the enemy cleared out Lt Lopez concentrated on placing our eggs. With near pin point accuracy he estimated at minimum fifty percent of the bombs hit the bridge. Flak on the back side was lighter but still as inaccurate as going in. I/B Target Zone 6b: As we formed back up for the trip home a flight of Bf 109s attacked the Group. three of them focused on the "Kat-Astrophe." Our P-47's took away two of the three, leaving just one to deal with. But this Hun was high quality. To the best of our efforts he just wouldn't go away. We had a running scrap with this guy. First, Lt Muncy and Sgt. Ventura hit the Bf-109, yet the German kept pressing his attack as if nothing happened. (Peckham's Fighter Quality variant - Exporte) Though it did knock off his aim as he missed on the first pass. On his next pass Sgt Monroe damaged him again stitching a line of holes in the Bf 109's port wing. Trying to add another kill mark on his many painted on his tail he made one more run on the "Kat-Astrophe." making a run from six o'clock level he finally hit home by raking our starboard wing and the tail. First hit caught the outboard fuel cell. it started to leak but quickly sealed itself. TSgt Hanlon kept an eagle eye on it for the remainder f the mission. the round that went through the tail narrowly missed hitting SSgt Tollvers head, but severed a few control cables to the tail plane control surfaces. SSgt Tolliver is one Lucky Bastard! After the mission our crew chief informed us that the other starboard wing hit was to the wing spar. After this attack the Kraut broke off his attack. This was the last contact with the Reich's Luftwaffe for the day. I/B Zone 6a-1: Other than one very scary incident the trip home was uneventful. Though the one incident was almost our end. Over the English Chanel we got stuck in a large cloud for 5-10 minutes and whjen we came out of the soup there was a large shinny silver plane dead in front of use. We took immediate evasive action and just cleared our Port wing from clipping the "Even Steven's", 2Lt McKinney's crew. We don't think 2Lt McKinney's crew knew we almost collided as they didn't adjust their course. After this there was no events to report. The Kat-Astrophe landed in Text Book style. Mission Note: Staff Sargent William (Billy) Tolliver, finished up his tour with 25 missions. SSgt Tolliver started his tour on the " Kitt 'n' KaBoodle" in Lt Christopher "Kitt" Bodle's" crew. On his fifteenth mission Sgt Tolliver received a fortunate light wound on mission 64 to Bolzano Italy that kept his out of the next two missions, as the "KaBooble" was lost on the very next mission over Ploesti. Then on mission 66, the first mission for " Kat-Astrophe," Lt Louis Young's crew, Who was seriously wounded, their tail gunner was killed. On "Kat-Astrophe's" second mission Sgt Tolliver rejoined, the now, Lt Thomas Barber's crew, to continue his tour. Here are a few interesting facts about, now, Tech Sargent Tolliver's tour; - Flew in three Army Airforce's, starting with 12 USAAF last mission, Flew entire 15 USAAF tour, end with his 25th Mission, which was the First mission, with the 8th USAAF
- First Mission 50 to Antheor, France - Bridge with the 12 USAAF
- Last mission 76 to Caen, France - Bridges with the 8th USAAF
- Claimed 5.3 kills, only 3.8 were confirmed. Damaged Claims 4, Probable Claims 2.
- Awards, Air Medal with 4 Clusters. one Purple Heart.
- Engaged four enemy fighter types; Bf 109, Bf 110, FW 190 & Me 410
- Served under three command Pilots. 1st Lt Christopher "Kitt" Bodle's (8 mission), 1st Lt Gerald Stevenson (7 missions), and 1st Lt Thomas Barber (10 missions.)
- Has requested a second tour of 25 missions with the "Kat-Astrophe's" crew. (only the second time in over 500 missions playing B-17:QotS and TfT I have given a second tour to a crew member.)

O/B Zone 1-8a: Take off was another adventure with the poor weather, though we got off in good shape and the rest of the group formed up on the 79ths lead. No enemy activity till we made the French coast. A swarm of Butcherbirds made an attempt to intercept our aircraft, but the boys with the 367th FG chased them off. The fighter jockeys destroyed two and chased off one FW190. The German coastal defense put up a half-hearted barrage of inaccurate light flak. O/B Target Zone 8b: The first real resistance cam just before the IP. Four FW's and a Messerschmitt intercepted us ahead and above. One butcherbird was sent home burning by a hot P-47 pilot. Leaving the other three to make their attack. Lt Muncy hit the Bf 109 square in the engine causing it to burn. this German only made the one pass. The other Fritz's missed and broke off their attacks. Then came the flak. It was moderate intensity and inaccurate. This left us to drop with five tenth's cloud cover. The pressure of being lead ship caused Lt to misjudge the drop and we completely missed the aerodrome. I/B Target Zone 8b: Flak on the back side of the target was lighter and just as inaccurate. We made it through without a scratch. Two waves approached us as we formed back up to head home. First wave consisted of FW's, of which three came our way. Two were intercepted by the 367th FG, sending one home smoking and chasing off another. Sgt Monroe and TSgt Hanlon destroyed the remaing Kraut. This must have spooked the second wave as they broke off before any resistance was made. I/B Zone 7-1: Thing heated up once we were out of the target area. We were first jumped by a squadron of Bf 109F's. Four fighters turn on the "Astrophy" with two chased off by our little friends. Our gunners filled one Messerschmitt with .5 cals send it spinning out of control. The last enemy fighter made a weak attack, missing us and then breaking off his attack. The next wave was two FW 190s. Our little Friends were off defending others in the 509th, so we had to fend off these enemy fighters. our gunners sent both off trailing smoke and flames. The last wave was odd. As we could see they were "Top Guns" as they made repeated attacks on the 379th even if they were trailing smoke. (#35 RE-Luftwaffe Top Guns rolled) Again we experienced light flak on the coast, which was very inaccurate. About fifty miles later is was our turn with these Top Guns as a Swarm of FW's intercepted "Kat-Astrophy." Luckily two P-47's of the 367th chased off one FW 190. Even with hitting these butcherbirds they made repeated attacks. Though their hits did minor damage except for shattering the port window in the cockpit. After their final attack we saw no more signs of the Luftwaffe. Weather had improved at Sudbury and we were able to land with on issues. 1st Lt. 1st Lt Barber, 79th BS Pilot MISSION #15 (Groups 81) Date: July 23rd, 1944 Target: Creiel, France - Aerodrome Plane: B-17G-797 "Kat-Astrophe" Position: Middle Cell / (#16) Altitude: 23,400feet 38x 100lbs AN-M30 General Purpose Mission Report C03M81 -797
O/B Zone 1-5a: Take off was awful, with BAD weather, though we got off and formed up with the rest of the rest of the 79th BG. Seams that the weather kept the enemy at bay for most of the trip in. A Rotte of Butcherbirds made an attempt to intercept our aircraft, but our escort, 31st FG P-51'd, chased them off. Just as we were 100miles from the target two JU 88C's appeared. One was driven off by the 31st FG. the other JU 88C attacked from nine 0'clock Low and was shredded by our boys. This claim was latter denied by the review board. Crossing the coast we encountered light flak that was inaccurate. O/B Target Zone 5b: Pt the IP a lone butcherbird targeted the "Kat-Astrophy." Yet, once again the 31st FG came to our rescue. The last we saw of this Hun it was trailing heavy smoke with two Mustangs in trail. The Germany atepted to make his escape in a near by cloud bank. As we lined up for the target we were shaken by an aerial bomb going off just out of reach of the "Kat-Astrophy." The shock wave scattered our formation and disrupted our drop. Flak over the target was light and inaccurate. Trying to gather our composure Lt Lopez had to drop with Ten tenth's cloud cover. Not observing the drop impacts through the cloud cove we assume the drop completely missed the aerodrome. I/B Target Zone 5b: There was no flak on the backside of the target. Again on the egress we were bombed from above, which again scattered the squadron. With the formation disrupted for a second time a couple of Schwarm's targeted the 79th. A lone Rotte of FW 190D's turned their attention on our plane. With our escorts attending to other planes in the squadrons the two butcherbirds had a straight shot at the "Kat-Astrophy." Lt Lopez got a piece of the first one by, causing the German to miss hitting our plane. The second one came in unmolested shooting too early and low to hit the broad side of a barn. He must have been real green as he barely missed hitting th "Kat-Astrophy", almost causing a Catastrophes! Both Fw's went on to other pray. I/B Zone 4-1: After the run in with the two FW 190's there was no more Luftwaffe activity involving the "Kat-Astrophy." The formation never did tighten up, but this didn't attract the enemy. Costal flak was light and just as inaccurate as earlier. Weather hadn't improved upon return to Sudbury, though we were able to land with incident. 1st Lt. Thomas BarberPilot of, " Kat-Astrophe" (B-17G-30-B0 42-31797) 79th BS, 509th BG(H), 8th USAAF. Sudbury, England - Station 174 (Square [W])
