After Action Report (using QOTS): We had fine weather for the mission again, and took off without any issues or gremlins. After a mere 100 miles we had a run in with five Italian 2001 of which two were chased off by P-38’s. Rossetti hammered one at 12 high, but this was denied at interrogation. Lieutenant Cassidy raked heavy fire into another at 1:30 level, forcing the pilot to eject.
At the IP a diving 2001 came in at such a steep angle he evaded all escorts and our gunners fire. He struck us twice, one hitting the number 4 engine which continued to run perfectly as if nothing had happened. The Italian swung around again but his luck ran out as he was in turn struck by lightnings. It dropped in flames, breaking up as it did so.
The flak kicked us around a bit and put a superficial hit in the tail, but even with the buffeting we took Kassel plopped 40% on target.
Inbound
After the turn the flak was less severe and we were able to avoid it all. But once past it, a diving 109 came along and knockout our tail turret. He thought he’d come in again at 12 low but our escorts had something to say about that and chased him off. A second wave of three 110 appeared, but they also were deterred by P-38’s. It was about this time that we lost Jersey Bounce with a wing tank fire, but her crew all managed to bail out.
The rest of the flight was rather quiet and we landed back at Giulia as we’d left, without any problems
A very short mission with an excellent result. We effected a satisfactory drop, removed one fighter from the axis Air Force and possibly another. Altogether a good day.

After Action Report: (Flown using TFT) “There goes Jersey Bounce!” Sgt Peter Carson calls over the interphone. Not aware he still as the mike keyed, Carson’s frantic, “Come on! Come on!” echoes in the ears of the rest of Laid Back Lady’s crew. Fortunately it is quickly followed by his count of, “One…two…three…” until all ten chuteare reported.
Almost immediately afterward, Carson’s partner in the waist, Sgt John Ringle announces, “Bit O’ Lace is falling out of formation.”
While some had a rough go of it this mission, it proved to be a relative milk run for us. The clear skies over Giulia made takeoff and assembly easy. And, while we ran into the enemy shortly thereafter (Zone 2), no EA reached us. They did however manage to disrupt the formation. It wouldn’t be until target egress that the 78th tightened things back up.
Target ingress (Zone 3) wasn’t as difficult as expected, only two Me 109s opposing us. Both were driven off the Lightnings of the 1st FG. Flak was heavy, but not particularly accurate, Lady suffering only superficial damage. Still, the bouncing around was enough to throw 2LT Martell’s aim off. Estimate only 20% effect on target.
We got hit again by flak on target egress. Though again the damage was minor. This was followed up with another pair of bandits, an Me 109 and a G55. Both driven off by the p-38s. Others weren’t so lucky; Bit O’ Lace falling out of formation and Jersey Bounce going down. The crew counted ten chutes from the latter. This was to be our last enemy encounter for the mission, ending with a textbook landing at Giulia.
Both Lady and her crew will be ready to fly again tomorrow.

B-17 F - "Amazing Maisie" B-17F-65BO 42-29701
Pilot: 1LT Philip Travanti
Squadron: 79th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment Group, 15th Air Force, USAAF
Squadron/Formation Position: Middle/Middle
Mission/Plane #: 10/10
Target: Verona, Italy - Marshalling Yard
Mission Date: February 17th, 1944
It is with regret I have to report the loss of "Amazing Maisie" and her entire crew. From witness accounts from crew on nearby planes, "Amazing Maisie" had an uneventful journey until they were approaching the target zone. Defensive escort was unavoidably spread thinly defending the group when three enemy Messerschmitt Bf109 fighter aircraft penetrated the combat box. They came in from above and below, attacking "Amazing Maisie" from its rear arc.
One fighter attacked, missed and broke off. Fire from the second caused a fire in the port fuel tank. In itself this would have required the crew to bail out immediately or for the pilot to put the plane into a very steep dive taking it out of formation for the slim chance it would put the fire out. Seemingly, it was the third enemy fighter's cannon fire. It penetrated the fuselage and hit the bomb bay, the bombs exploded prematurely, and destroyed the plane. Death would have been instantaneous.
The Purple Heart will be posthumously awarded to the following
LT Philip Travanti, 2LT Peter Jones (OLC), 2nd Alan De La Zouch (2nd OLC), 2LT Marcus Murray MSGT Ricardo Ruiz, TSGT Michael Malone (OLC), SGT Saul Helberg, SGT John Robinson, SGT Stanley Smith, SGT George Windom
These brave men embodied the fighting spirit of the United States Army Air Force and were a credit to the 79th Bomber Squadron and the 509th (H) Bombardment Group.
Respectfully yours
Major William H Stockwell DFC S3, 509th (H) Bombardment Group

AFTER ACTION REPORT Using TfT, Mandatory rules + optional rules 'Limburger Variant Mech Failures', Peckam 'Expanded German Fighter Skills' and Ilmarainen 'More Detailed Bomb Run Procedures' After our warm welcome with the 79th we're promised a little warm-up mission.
Immediately after take-off we are attacked by a veteran and flieger FW190 and already our nose gun jams. McLaughlin curses and fiddles with the gun and as we approach Anzio we are met by 4 ME109. Our fighters chase 2 of the away but now our left waist gun jams too. Woods however has no time to complain. (I know he's cursing me for flying this old rusty plane). McBride hits the left wing of one of the Jerries and the fighter breaks off the attack. That last Ace ME109 however manages to hit us multiple times: our left wing aileron becomes inoperable and a fuel tank starts to leak. However, at the rate of fuel loss, we can make it home still. Our rudder is hit as well. McBride hits his fuel tank and the plane finally lets go. Another round is already upon us, this time a ME109 and a ME110. Our navigator Lifson hits the ME110 and before we realize it, the plane turns into a giant fireball! Lifson roars.
Meanwhile, heavy flak start to shake the plane. But nothing that distracts our bombardier now. We arrive at the Initial Point and follow the group on a full bomb length. We have a clear sight of the target and our bombs drop on target... Jerome is confident he hit at least 75% on target, despite the heavy flak. It's too early to cry victory, flak suddenly hits the center of the plane. A sharp metal plate cuts through the muscle of Powell's right leg. He grunts and shouts that we should get the hell out of here. With a leaking tank and a bleeding Powell we turn south and make haste...
We land our big bird without much trouble. Lifson is 100% sure he shot that ME110 and McLaughlin did exceptional with the bomb drop. Powell's leg is hurting, but it could all have been much worse. It's a bit of a shock the commission only grants McLaughlin half a credit. And the doc says Powell will only need a day or five to rest. There's no way that leg is going to be fully healed by then! At least, for a bit of good news, McLaughlin is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the technicians complement us with the little damage our plane took after all the heavy flak we sustained. They will have the Six Nights ready by tomorrow.

Take-off and assembly goes smoothly. OutboundZone 2: We’re still climbing up to mission altitude when the first bandits appear. In our case, it’s a G.55 from the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana and a JU-88. A Lightning takes out the 88, and the G.55 is shot down as it comes in from our six. The Italian pilot takes to the silk. Target Zone (3)Looks like the 509th has kicked a hornet’s nest as the air is swarming with enemy fighters. We’re lucky as we make our target run, as the Jerries leave us alone. The flak has us zeroed in [random event] and they hit us. Our oxygen system starts losing pressure, but the leak seems slow enough that we will make it back to Giulia without any trouble. Zeller gets a good bomb drop. The flak misses as we turn and head for the barn. We’re greeted upon exiting the flak zone by three waves of bandits. First is a lone Focke-Wulf who is immediately engaged by a P-38. Then it’s a trio of ME-109s and an ME-110. The 110 is easy meat for a P-38. The 109s are all driven off by our defensive fire, and we take no damage. Jersey Bounce is set upon and catches fire. We count 10 parachutes before she explodes. Another Italian, this time flying a Macchi 205, and an ME-109… The 205 gets into a dogfight with a Lightning, and the 109 has its right wing blown off by Maher. InboundZone 2: The furball of aircraft continues as we leave the target area. An FW and an RE.2005 are driven off by our escorts. A quartet of attacking Focke-Wulfs is whittled down to just a pair, courtesy of the 1st Fighter Group. We trade fire with them. We take some hits including one on the wing fuel tanks, but the self-sealing tank does its job. Thank heavens. Another quartet…. This time a trio of FWs and an ME-410. Once again, a P-38 goes after the twin-engine fighter. Another Lightning takes on an FW. The remaining pair of FW-190s both miss. Nice smooth landing. 2LT Steven Canyon, Command Pilot B-24J The Schmoo 78th BS, 509th BG (H), 15th AF

80th BOMB SQUADRON Mission #10, North of Anzio Beachhead - German Supply Dumps AAR
The men were prepared for the worst. Intel leaked like a sieve and they knew that the mission in support of the Anzio beachhead had not gone well for the squadron. Even by the standards of the hell that a mission as the Low Squadron could be did not begin to explain the poor showing. And the men knew it.
As Major Shapiro strode into the room, the men came to a particularly sharp attention and the only sounds audible were feet and benches scraping on the floor. Shapiro took his place at the front of the room and looked around. He waited a heartbeat or two longer than normal before saying, "At ease. Seats."
The sorrow that so often lurked behind Shapiro's eyes was not in evidence. Instead, a glow of anger was there. When he spoke, his voice was controlled. Strained. But controlled. "Well, gentlemen, that mission may have been the worst one this squadron has flown. We've had bloodier missions than this one. We're had poorer weather than this one. We've had sloppier formation flying than this one. But this one takes the cake for poor bombing. 14.9 percent of our bombs fell on target. FOUR-TEEN-POINT-NINE! You gentlemen did not even put fifteen percent on target. Honestly, though, I'm not angry." He paused. "Well, at least not that angry. Rather, I'm disappointed. This was our tenth mission. I might have expected this quality of a drop a month ago, but in our tenth mission? Unacceptable." The last word came out through a clenched jaw. Best in the squadron is Georgia Peach at 50% on target. Second best is The Cat's Meow and Double Bomb, tied at 40%." He sighed. "Gentlemen. This must improve.
"Miss Grizz was downed and he we have confirmation that four men survived and are in captivity. The remainder did not make it. In addition, a man was lost on The Cat's Meow. While we mourn our lost comrades, we need to rededicate ourselves to avenging them by hurting the enemy.
"Gunnery in the squadron continues to be good with claims for 29 enemy aircraft and official credit for 16 and a third."
He consulted his notes for a moment then looked up and said, "I know you're tired. I know how strained you are. That's the reason I'm not ordering practice bombing. We don't need to stress you or the aircraft right now. Rumor has it that the next mission is going to be a tough one. At least we're the Middle Squadron. But that's no guarantee." He paused, then continued, "When we're done here, go get some sleep. Or have a few drinks. Or both." With that he headed out of the room and left the XO to dismiss them. ----------------------------- STATISTICAL ADDENDUM

78TH BOMB SQUADRON
AFTER-ACTION REPORT
MISSION 10 - Anzio, Italy
With a creak of a door in walks the the CO Major Rudy Jopp and the XO Captain Garfield.
At the same time, Sgt Wallace bellows: “Boxcars… Attention! ” … and everyone rises.
"Men, I know we've faced a grueling schedule. Our efforts are paying dividends with another good showing. 37% on target which destroyed a significant and irreplaceable cache of German Army supplies. We did lose the Jersey Bounce and Dark Angel who sadly exploded over target, no doubt a hit to the bomb load. We pray for 1Lt. Baker and his crew. (10 chutes were counted with the Jersey Bounce crew bailed out."
Fumbling with his newly acquired glasses which clearly annoyed the Major he continues "The Bit 'o Lace led the Flying Boxcars with 60% on target followed the Bonkers and Bama Beauty with 50%. Twenty-eight Air Medals and ten Air Medals 1st Oak Leaf were earned. The list of recipients will be posed at the canteen. Congrats to all !"
"Oh, about the canteen, our chefs recently procured about 40 chickens from local farmers who were all to willing to exchange for luxuries such as toilet paper and other items. So there will be fresh meat for tonight's supper !. Have a hardy meal as our next mission will be over the Alps into Germany. More details forthcoming".
"That's all boys"
The Major closes his briefing folder and begins to walk toward the aisle.
“Boxcars… Attention” and the assembled throng rises again.
"Dismissed!"
