“A short one today,” 509th S2 Maj Harlan Beech begins his briefing. “But, you’ll probably see the heaviest resistance of any mission thus far. Especially near the Beachhead. The Luftwaffe will be on you as soon as you near the Front Line Trace, and stay with you until you’re practically back here at Giulia.”
“You can expect heavy flak on target ingress, with it lightening up slightly on egress.”
“Once again, Metro is promising ‘Sunny Italy,’ both over the target and here at Giulia.
“Your escort this mission will be provided by the Lightnings of the 1st FG.”
“There are no emergency airfields along the route. But then again, it is short enough that you should be able to make it home. If you can’t, at least try to come down on the friendly side of the Front Lines. Should you do otherwise, remember your obligations under the Geneva Conventions and the Fighting Man’s Code.”
“Maj Stockwell,” Beech says by way of transitioning to the S3 portion of the briefing.
"Thankyou, Major Beech," replies S3 Maj William Stockwell as he steps up to the podium, takes a deep breath and begins.
"Anzio will go down in history as either a bold outflanking maneuver or the ill-conceived idea of some doped-up politician. Apparently, it was Winston Churchill's idea about landing up the coast to try and bypass the Gustav Line but as it's on our side of liberated Italy, it's our boys who get to do it. Lets just make their lives a bit easier by bombing the Nazi's supply dumps so they've got nothing to fight back with.
"On top of that, there is little I can add. Straight journey there, straight journey back. If all goes well for you, you'll be back for lunch. If it doesn't, you won't.
"Good luck up there, and I hope to see you all in the mess later."

After Action Report It appeared that everything was going to go our way today. The weather was bright and clear, it was a very short mission, and we were provided with excellent fighter cover. The crew was skeptical as this is when something usually jumps up and bites you in the ass, especially with us flying the lead.
We took off and formed up without issues or gremlins and made our way for Anzio. In the target zone we were met by a diving 109 that was taken out by several P-38s eager to add to their scores. Shortly after, a JU-88 appeared and he also fell to our escorts.
The flak was heavy, but thankfully it was inaccurate and failed to do us any damage. Kellici put 20% on target and, even though it was just his first mission I wasn’t exactly impressed with the effort given the conditions
INBOUND
We made our way through the flak field without a problem and were met outside of it by two 109 and a 110. Lightning strikes took care of a 109 and the 110, with the remaining fighter coming in off of our 4:30. He was heavily damaged by Konstanaro in the ball turret. The 109 managed to put a harmless round into us and although it looked like it was going to drop out of the sky, some credit stealing P-38 pilot jumped all over him and claimed it for himself.
After that it was an uneventful short hop back to the field where we landed safely.
Overall, it was a successful mission. No one was hurt, we hit the target and our ground crew is going to have a very easy day of it and retire early.

For a change, the weather on takeoff was good as was the forecast weather for the target and landing.
Zone 2: Nothing to report.
Zone 3 (Target): After the IP, the Little Friends did a spectacular job. The took care of an Me-109 at 6:00 High and an Re2005 at 9:00 High. Flak was heavy and we took hits in the Starboard Wing Root, a Superficial Hit to the Fuselage, and two hits to the Radio Room that killed poor Sergeant Thomas. Bombing went well as the undercast was only slight. Its estimated that 40% hit inside the box.
Zone 3 (Inbound): Flak moderated to moderate after the drop. Two waves of enemy aircraft attempted to hit us but the escorts took care of them. The first was a pair of Me-110s at 9:00 Level and 10:30 Low. The second wave was an FW-190 at 12:00 High and two Me-109s at 11:30 Level and 3:00 Level, all of which the escorts got.
Zone 2: A trio of FW-190s at 3:00 Low, 12:00 High, and 12:00 Level were all intercepted by the Little Friends.
Landing was without incident. We were all rather subdued as we brought Sergeant Thomas' body down from the Radio Room.

A quick run to the beach. Saw only a handful of e a/c, mostly Italian. Flak heavy over the target. We took a hit to the port inboard engine that started a fuel leak. Based on the rate of leakage, we would have time to get home, which we did. Just before landing, an Eyetal G55 snuck in on us and damaged the tail, but nothing too serious.

After Action report: (using TfT) (Optional rules: Crew-chief effects; Crew Stress; Jasta 6 German Pilot Quality; Peckham’s Random Event Variant Table; Axis Aircraft 1942-45).
A real short hop this time, but it looks like the target area is going to be hot.
Perez turned up at the briefing, having convinced the medics that he was well enough for this trip. I’m not sure that this is the case, however, and he’ll bear careful watching.
We also had to welcome Sgt. Ed Levin into the crew as temporary replacement for our injured waist gunner, but had no chance to get him any practice with such a short turnaround between missions.
Outbound: The battle started almost as soon as the Group turned on to the heading for the target after forming up. Hughes yelled, “Rockets incoming!” from the tail as we were still going through some checklist items, but nothing came close to us.
These were quickly followed by four FW190s, which were more accurate. Our escorts were busy elsewhere, but with two bogeys ahead and two behind, high and low in each area, all four of our twin gun positions gave them hell as they started their attack.
All gunners reported hits, but the most obvious was dead ahead, where Long had clipped the tip off the 190’s wing, causing it to roll at a frightening rate and fall away earthwards.
The defensive fire appeared to have done its work, with two of the three remaining Jerries missing, and then heading home. Unfortunately, the one high behind us was not put off. His fire raked the waist area, from where there came screams and cursing. This last FW, for some reason, didn’t come around for another attack, but also broke off for home. (FBOA result)
Haley eventually came on the com, just as I’d ordered Ward back to check on what was happening. “The new guy – Ed – he’s gone, guys. I think he took a direct hit to the top of his legs; it just about blew him in half. There wasn’t anything I could do but watch him die.” Haley sounded far from his normal self.
There was no time for brooding, as the next group of fighters could already be seen on their way in to the Group. I quickly told Long to stick with his position until the bombs were gone, then go and cover the right waist position.
The air over and around the beachhead area was thick with opposition, and we were soon busy again. Three Me110s piled in on us, with our escorts taking out one of them before he could open fire.
Perez dealt with the one off our starboard bow quickly, causing its port engine to blow up as it moved into attack us. The last one was low in our six o’clock, with both Ozzy and Hughes hitting it, but failing to finish it off. The Jerry put a couple more holes in the fuselage before breaking off with two smoking engines.
He was replaced by the heaviest flak that I’d seen in a while. A series of thumps rocked the plane, but engine and flying controls appeared unaffected, and nobody suffered any wounds.
“This one looks really good, guys,” Long commented as he released the bombs. “Heading back to the waist area, skipper.”
The flak was a little lighter on the egress from the target, and nothing hit us. However, as we cleared the flak area, we were joined by another schwarm of four Me109s: one ahead, one to port, and two off the starboard side. The Lightning escorts chased off one from the starboard side, and guns thundered all around the aircraft.
Our gunners were on the ball today. All three remaining bandits were hit, with the ones to port and starboard being eliminated. Long, having moved to the starboard waist gun, picking up his second kill of the day.
The remaining 109 was inaccurate with his return fire, then turned away for home. Unfortunately, four FW190s were quickly in place to take over, with the 1st FG dealing with one of them for us.
These were a bit more persistent than their predecessors, but – while our gunners failed to down any – they did enough to put off the aim of most of the incoming fire. The couple of shots that hit us, once again, appeared to do little to our plane, and the Jerries soon gave up and headed for home.
Inbound: Thankfully, the short return trip to Giulia was without incident, and we were soon on the deck again.
Ward and Haley brought out the body bag with poor Sgt. Levin in it for the medics to take away. I watched Perez very closely, but he displayed none of the emotions we saw at the end of the previous mission. Maybe because it was a new replacement that was killed, not Dale Stafford? He still bears watching, as I feel that this situation is not yet over.
A pile of paperwork followed this trip: five of the original crew reached ten missions, so receive an Oak Leaf Cluster for their Air Medal, and poor Levin got his posthumous Purple Heart. However, when the bombing and gunnery results came in, I had to apply for two DFCs! Long put all bar 3% of our bomb load on target, according to the photo-recce, and Perez was credited with a full kill on the Me110 he destroyed, making him our first Ace gunner.
This definitely lightened his mood, but we are still waiting on the final result of the CO’s DSC application on Perez’s behalf, which will hopefully be successful and help him get past what is affecting him.
All in all, a mixed mission. Great work by all in the very busy target area, tempered with sorrow at the loss of Levin, whom we never actually got to know. I’m beginning to realise that this is how war progresses, through ups and downs – sometimes very close together – but I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to it.

Confirmed Claims: .5x FW190 .5xME109 - BT - SGT Roberts .5x ME109 - SWG - SGT Brown Casualties: None Award/ Promotions Requests: None After Action Report Outbound This would be a quick one and we needed to get all actions ready quickly as we would be attacked and need to bomb very fast. After officer briefing, we discussed the tasks and timing. Once ready we were off to the plane, nice to see clear weather on takeoff, but this would be more enemy fighters spotting us. Once airborne, LT Devine and I got us into formation quickly and Lt Thompson armed the bombs while the rest of the crew, clear guns and readied for any attack. We quickly reached the front line and we were ready, but I believe we surprised the Germans as there was not fighter until we reached Anzio. The first were a single ME109 and a ME110, but a couple of the P47's bounced the ME110, but the ME109 made it through. Lining up on our 3o'clock level, SGT Mendoza, Roberts and Brown opened on him, shredding his right wing and he spiraled down. We then encountered heavy flak around the supply dump and we took a hit, but it was just near hit with some spent shell that ripped a hole in the floor of the radio room. SGT Ramirez has a new luck charm with the twisted metal. Lt Thompson lined up the bomber and let the 500 lbr's go and with good weather, it looked like we did about 40% damage with our bomb load. InboundWe turned to head back through the flank and it was still heavy but we made it through a little faster after losing all that bomb weight. But the fighters were ready for us, and we were jumped by two FW190's that looked to be diverted to come after us. The P47's took on the one coming for our nose, but another 3o'clock level we had to deal with. SGT's Mendoza, Brown and Roberts were back at it. This time damaging wings of the FW190 and it missed us as it passed over and it headed back home. This was just the start as four more FW190s came in. We were so glad for so many supporting fighters as 2 P47's took on the ones aiming for our nose. We had to deal with the 3o'clock level and 9o'clock high ones that were left. SGT's Roberts and Brown fired on the 3o'clock level hitting its engine and fuselage. It turned over as we saw a chute come out. SGT's Mendoza and Scott took on the 9o'clock high hitting the nose and left wing throwing off his attack and he headed home landing safely. As said before SGT Ramirez has a new good luck charm that he has mounted in the radio room, that he say's missed us for a reason and that is why he is mounting in the radio room from now on. Superstitions are useful if they help rid us of fear and get us home. 2nd LT Sanders, CoPilot, 80th BS, 509th BG, 15th AF

Spare crew assigned to a Spare Bomber
Over half of the bandits were driven off by the P-38s and Jersey Bounce put 30% of her bombs on target, while suffering minor damage. Unfortunately, the multiple waves overwhelmed the defense, and a FW-190 slipped in to put a stream of shells into the Port wing, which erupted into flames. All ten crewmembers were able to bail out behind the German lines before the inevitable fireball ripped the stricken B-24 apart.

Giulia Airbase: Good weather. Smooth take off and assembly Zone 2 Outbound: Nothing to report. Zone 3 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): An Fw-190 suddenly came out covered by the sun but did not hit us and moved away as quickly as it had arrived. A second wave formed up by 5 Fw-190 attacked us. One was driven off by escort while three of them were shut down by our gunners. The fifth Jerry was damaged but managed to place shots at our ship, knocking out the Pilot Compartment heat system and a few holes in the bodywork. On his second pass he was heavily damaged and preferred to move away. As we approached the target, the Flak was heavy and accurate: the sky filled with black clouds and our ship was shaken and jolted but not damaged. However, this did not allow for accurate bomb drops. Still heavy flak as we tacked to take the return course but no damage reported nor GAF against us. Zone 2 Inbound: Descended to 8000 feet to avoid frostbite; no flak or enemy aircraft detected. Giulia Airbase: Safe landing -------------------------------------------------

Famous last words, no doubt. It was a short but busy flight. We were flying lead, low squadron. No sooner were we at altitude than we were at the IP and heading to the target. We cannot recall if we faced more enemy aircraft on other missions, but we did know that we hadn’t encountered so many over such a short time span. We were under attack from the moment we cross the front lines until after we re-crossed them and were over Allied territory. Escorts were good, but even they couldn’t keep up with the onslaught. We faced 14 direct enemy attacks, with escorts stopping 7 of them. Of the 7 that got through, T/Sgt Fields accounted for 4 of them. Even with the barrage of enemy aircraft they caused no damage to Wimpy. With the IP coming up a full flight of four Bf-109s attacked. Escorts claimed one. 2Lt Sheets, manning the nose gun (straddling 2Lt Ford) missed the 109 coming in from 12. T/4th Mace, in the ball, smoked a 109 at 12 low, setting its engine on fire. He reported the pilot bailed out. He was not awarded a credit for the kill. T/Sgt Fields’ for from the top turret sheared the wing off the third 109 that got through the escort screen. No chute was reported. T/Sgt Fields was credit with half a kill. Flak was very heavy. Even with the intense assault from the ground, we only took a few punctures of the aircraft skin, in the waist. Sgts Watkins and MacDougal had a few choice words when the plane received unwanted ventilation at their station. Something along the lines, “Isn’t it cold enough up here?!” 2Lt Ford claimed he got a good bead on the target. Intelligence, on the other hand, didn’t agree and gave hm credit for about 9% on target. [Rolled a 2, followed by 1+2+6 X 1 for a total of 9%!] Pulling away from the target, the flak was still heavy, but not as intense in its duration. We took no further damage. Just as the flak let up, bombs fell through the formation. We went unscathed. Shortly after the aerial bombs, a duo of Fw190s with a straggling Italian Bf109 attacked. Our escorts drove off the pair of 190s, leaving the lonely Italian. T/Sgt Fields tore off a wing of the errant 109. The pilot was seen bailing out. T/Sgt Fields was denied credit for the kill, receiving a probable instead. Crossing back over our lines we faced three Bf110s, a pair of 109s, a pair of Junkers 88, and a sole Fw190. Escorts drove off a pair of 110s, the 190, and one of the Junkers. T/Sgt Fields continued his outstanding marksmanship, downing one of the 110s, for only a half credit. In an outstanding effort, tail gunner Griffin made a passing shot at one of the 109s, shredding a wing, and sending it into an uncontrolled spin. Unfortunately, the review board didn’t see it his way, and denied any credit. The remaining 109 had its cockpit chewed up by T/Sgt Fields, who got a one-third credit for that kill. The remaining Junkers 88 was zeroed in on by our ball gunner T/4th Mace, 2Lt Sheets, and T/3rd Watkins. Watkins missed, with Mace and Lt Sheets having their guns jam. It made no never mind as the Junkers missed, and departed. After that it was the descent to base and waiting our turn in the pattern. S/Sgt Stanton was pleased that he had minimal repairs to do. AAR
OUTBOUND We took off and joined up on the squadron lead, Bonkers, without any problems. The boys from the 1FG took up their position and we were off for a short run to the target. Running our checks after takeoff SGT Kimbelin discovered a problem with the bomb bay doors. He managed to get the problem resolved and bombs armed just a we arrived in the target area.
TARGET AREA Once we were in the target area things heated up quickly. A flight of 4 Me109s attacked from our 12, our little friends took care of 3 of them. The fourth got through and we were hit multiple times including a hit to the right-wing root. S/SGT Marshall in turn did enough damage to the Me109 that it only did the one pass. They were followed up by a pair of FW190s that were intercepted by the lightings escorting us. As we started our bomb up were rocked by a flak burst that did minor damage to the right wing. 2LT Marcum was able to keep the us steady and was on-target assessed as 50% effective. Flak on the way to the IP lessened and was ineffective. As we departed the RP after reforming our little friends intercepted a Me110 trying to slip in from below. Just before we departed the target area a swarm of 5 Me109s attacked. The boys from the 1 FG intercepted one, but the rest were able to attack. Several of them must have been green pilots. One at our 12 missed and broke off when our Nose gunner fired on him. As did the one at our 6 when our tail gunner started shooting. S/SGT Marshall took the wing off the one attacking at our 3, with a chute observed. The final one attacked from a vertical dive and missed.
INBOUND The enemy fighter activity took a short break but was we approached friendly territory 3 Me110 made a final attack. Our little friends took care of one of them. S/SGT Marshall and SGT Thompson turned the one at our 12 into a fireball. The third at our six evaded our defensive fire and hammered us doing multiple hits to the radio, pilot and nose compartments mostly for no effect but taking out our radio and intercom systems and well as damage to our left wing. When he came back for a second try SGT Totter l and SGT Thompson took his R wing off with a chute observed.
We made a safe landing at Giulia Airfield. T/SGT Patrick says it will take a couple of days to complete the needed repairs. The review board approved our claims giving S/SGTMarshall Ace status.

We have been assigned this morning to support the Anzio landings. Hopefully this will bring this miserable war in Italy to a swift end.
We took off and were barely able to settle into formation when we entered the target zone. We did not see any enemy fighters on the way in or out. We sustained minor damage to the tail from flak hits on the way in. Wetherall was off target. The area around the supply depot appeared to be crawling with Germans so hopefully caused some peripheral damage.

A quick mission for the Pride of the Wolverines. We had hardly settled into formation when the Luftwaffe attacked. A single FW 190 got through and Aldrich took a big piece out of his wing scaring him off. Another 190 found us over the targe zone. We missed him. He missed us.
The flak guns missed us as well. Then Edwards missed the target. We saw now fighters on the way home and landed safely. Too much missing today. I am not amused. The men are not going to happy when they miss their 2 day passes for a some training missions.

Today we supported the Anzio landings. I explained to the men if our soldiers can outflank the German army, we could end the war in Italy a lot faster.
We took off and settled nicely into formation. The short outbound flight was quiet. As we approached the target the Luftwaffe arrived. None of the Germans attacked us, but some stray gunfire from another B-17 hit the plane and seriously wounded Sgt. Cooper.
WHEN I FIGURE OUT WHICH GUNNER IN THIS SQUADRON SHOT UP MY RAIDO MAN HE IS GOING TO SPEND THE REST OF THE WAR CLEANING OUT LATRINES!!
We took some flak hits on the way in wounding Hatfield. Our brand-new bombardier, Lt. Moore was right on target and we turned for home. We took more flak hits on the way-out wounding Lewis.
We arrived safely back at base. Hatfield, Cooper, and Lewis were quickly taken off to the hospital. Cooper and Lewis are going to make it. Hatfield died of his wounds overnight.

Co-pilot Tommy Matthews was wounded but managed to take over the controls and bring the remainder of the crew home safely. We were worried about the heavy enemy flak as we approached the target but it was enemy fighters that gave us the most trouble. Our escorts had more than they could handle on the inboard flight. At one point we were jumped by five FW-190s. After Gil and Lou were lost it seemed as though our gunners were looking to avenge the losses and they took out three fighters including two Focke-Wulfs (the Gunnery Board only gave Jim credit for one). We feel good that we were able to drop on target and provide at least some assistance to what we have heard will be a difficult landing on the beachhead.

1st Lt Horst, 78th BS Pilot MISSION #8 (Groups 10) Date: February 17th, 1944 Target: North of Anzio, Italy - Supply Facility Plane: B-24D-210 "Stupid Dragon" Position: High Cell / TEC (#11) Altitude: 16,000feet 10x 500lbs AN-M64 Fragmentation Bombs Mission Report C04M10 -210
Zone 1-2 O/B: Heading to the target we had no enemy activity, but "Stupid Dragon" had another mechanical issue. About a hundred miles out we lost all control of the Ailerons. Target Zone 3 O/B: The Luftwaffe was up in force today. We were attacked by no less that ten mixed fighters. Bf 109's and Fw 109's. Our gunners nicked two and one FW 190 peppered us. Only damage was taking out Sgt. Sgt. Freeland's Heat. The second wave hit us prety hard as the Bf 109s took out the tail guns, the autopilot, navigator bomb controls, and our number three engine. We were able to down two hun and nick two others. As for our drop, it was miserably off target due to all the bombing gear that was destroyed. Target Zone 3 I/B: After the drop we turn into a swarm of mixed fighters. Bf 109's, Bf 110 and an Re.2005. Our boys were on their game as they downed five and damaging a sixth. With all the lead in the air the hun only scraped of paint from our bomber. Zone 2-1 I/B: From here on the skies were quiet. Landing was touchy with the number three engine out, but 2Lt. Mackoff and I managed to get " Stupid Dragon" on the ground without incident. I stopped by and the doc said Sgt. Plant will be fine after a week to recoup. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst

B-17F: Dam Yankees Pilot: 1Lt. B. Pease Assignment: 15th Air Force, 509th Bomber Group, 80th Squadron Mission Date: 17-February-1944 Mission No.: 10 Mission this Bomber: 10 Target for Today: Anzio Beachhead, Italy - Supply Dump Squadron Position: Low *Tail End Charlie* Result: On-Target 0% Mission Accomplished ! With the Dam Yankees flying as the Low Cell Tail End Charlie we expected to be very busy and it was though not as bad as we thought. German fighter activity was overall moderate and we downed three of them, all credited. Aircraft damage was the result of Flak on both the ingress and egress over the Anzio Beachhead target zone.
Our rookie Waist Gunner got his first taste of combat when Flak damaged his heat suit. He spent the rest of the sort huddled in the Radio Room manning the lone .55 cal.
Bombs missed the target and I pray we did not bomb our own troops. The fog of war.
Landed back at base without further incident.
That is all....

B-24D: BONKERS Pilot: 1Lt. J Sweeney Assignment: 15th Air Force, 509th Bomber Group, 78th Squadron Mission Date: 17-Feb-1944 Mission No.: 10 Mission this Bomber: Target for Today: Anzio Beachhead, Italy- Supply Dump Squadron Position: High Cell Lead Result: On-Target: 50% Flying as the High Squadron Cell Lead, we led the way for the Flying Boxcars. Enemy action was intense but did not impact an on-target delivery of ordnance.
As a precaution, shut down engine #3 after the bomb run as it was leaking oil and I incurred a close call with a FW-109 round which grazed my neck. Another inch and I would be a goner.
Loss oxygen in the Tail Gun compartment and the bomber oxygen tank took a hit as well which also caused leaking.
Did note the Jersey Bounce was lost and spotted (10) chutes.
Landed without incident.

Outbound, the defensive fire of of the 509th kept the Luftwaffe away from our bomber. Inbound our Aggressive Little Friends kept the Luftwaffe occupied. In between, a burst of Flak threw off our Bombardier's aim and wounded our Tail Gunner, causing the only damage suffered on the mission.

Awards: None Promotions: None AFTER ACTION REPORTThe skies were finally clear. The ground, however, was another story. The ground was so saturated it could absorb no more water, and there was nowhere left for it to run off too. Getting to the plane was an adventure. The 4x4, even at slow speed, was swerving, slipping, and sliding its way to the hard stand. It seemed half of the time we were driving sideways. Take off was fairly routine. We had a clean join up with the squadron, then the group, as we climbed to altitude. As we reached altitude, we encountered a pair of Fw-109s and five Bf-109s. Our escorts drove off the 190s, and one of the 109s. Our defensive gunnery exchanged hits with the four remaining marauders. On their first pass two of the enemy missed and did not return. On that first pass we took damage to the rubber rafts (later discovered), the autopilot mechanism and the pilot compartment heat. A number of hits were of no consequence. Two of the 109s made second passes. Big mistake. Both suffered hits that set them on fire. Flak over the target was as predicted. We lost the engine fire extinguishing controls, and the right aileron. Even with the hits on Bit o’ Lace Lt Bush was able to drop an estimated 60% on target. As we left the target, Bit o’ Lace dropped altitude below 10,000 feet. On egress from the target, we were attacked by another pair of Fw-190s and another fivesome of Bf-109s. Escorts drove off the pair of 109s as well as one of the 109s. None of the four remaining 109s hit us. We did stitch up a pair of the 109s, but not enough to knock them down. With the front lines passing below us, the enemy threw five more fighters at us, four Fw-190s, three 109s, and a single Me-410. Some of our escorts stuck with us when we dropped out of formation. They drove off three of the 190s and a 109. Defensive fire took over. The remaining 190 and the 410 were shot down quite handily. Flt Engineer McClain tore the wing from the 190, and tail gunner Dawson hit the 410’s fuel tank, blowing it up. The remaining 109s missed and were missed, as we exchanged fire. Landing was better than takeoff. With several hours of sunlight, the field had dried up a bit. Submitted by, 1Lt Damien Carroll, Pilot B-24D Bit o’ Lace 78th BS, 509th BG (H), 15th AF, USAAF
