Awards: Air Medal1Lt Jack Dawkins, 5th Award Purple Heart1Lt Nathaniel Sutherland, Second 2Lt Forrest Sweet, Second S/Sgt Henry Lyons, Third Promotions: None AFTER ACTION REPORTToday’s crew for Bonnie was cobbled together, today. Cobbled together with a very experienced crew members. No second guessing, every man knew his job. We faced no enemy fighters until the target area. We were first met by a trio of Me-109s. On the first pass we missed the first, who subsequently knocked out Lt Sweet’s heat. Lt Sweet, manning the nose chin turret, shot down the second 109. No chute was seen. The third 109 hit us good. He raked us wing tip to wing tip. He knocked out the right landing gear, set #2 on fire, and took out M/Sgt Putman’s O2. On the second pass the first 109 missed us, as we missed him. M/Sgt Putman shot down the third, again no chute was seen. A second wave of a pair of 109s attacked, with neither side causing any damage. Lt Dawkins put 40% on target, before we dropped out of formation to thicker and warmer air. Exiting the target, a 190 led a pair of 109s against us. We damaged the first 109 and shot down the second. It was a team effort with four crew members hitting the enemy fighter, killing the pilot, while rendering the fighter useless in the process. At this lower altitude, we were shot at, it seemed, by every German soldier in Yugoslavia. We were halfway through Yugoslavia when I took a piece of shrapnel to the shoulder, causing a minor cut. Reaching the Yugoslav coast, the Luftwaffe gave it one more try. Another 190 ed the way, this time for three 109s. We had some escorts at this altitude, driving away two of the enemy fighters. Lt Sweet got credit for shooting down the 190, giving him 1 and a third kills for the mission. The remaining 109 wounded Lt Dawkins and S/Sgt Lyons, before being driven off with damage. Crossing the Adriatic, we tended to our wounds. It was upon approach when we learned that we had no right landing gear. We were too low to bail out, so we all rode her in, in crash positions. When the dust settled, no one suffered further injury. Word is Bonnie will fly again. 1Lt Dawkins has just completed his 25th mission. Soon, he will be heading back to the States to sell War Bonds. Mission 33 AAR Mission Date: 17 May, 1944
Target: Bucharest, Romania – Marshalling Yard
Bomber SN: B-17G-20BO-42-31468; "Miss Behavin" 80th Bomb Sqdn., 509th (H) Bombardment Grp., 15th AF
Formation position: High Sqdn.
Pilot: 1st Lt. Tom Hathaway (Mission #15) Co-Pilot: 2nd Lt. Matt West (Mission #15) Bombardier: 2nd Lt. Ben Morrison (Mission: #15) Navigator: 2nd Lt. Evan Jones (Mission #15) Engineer: TSgt. Michael Godinez (Mission #15) Radio Operator: SSgt. Andy Mize (Mission #14) Ball Turret Gunner: Sgt. Craig Wiseman (Mission #15) Port Waist Gunner: Sgt. Jake Thompson (Mission #5) Starboard Waist Gunner: Sgt. Tom Latimer (Mission #7) Tail Gunner: Sgt. Robert Dyer (Mission #14)
Bomb Run: On/Off target: On target – 92%
Bomber Damage Sustained: multiple superficial hits (Peckham points =5)
Crew Casualties Sustained: None
Enemy Aircraft Claims: FW-190 Sgt. Latimer – Starboard Waist Gunner
I briefed the crew, including SSgt. Mize and Sgt. Latimer, both “released” from the base hospital to fly this mission. We are not expecting too much resistance except near the target area where we would have no fighter cover, but I warned everyone to stay alert. We took off and formed up with the rest of the 80th as the High Squadron for this mission.
We encountered a little resistance about 150 nm from the target area. We were attacked in two waves by multiple Bf-109’s. We did a little damage to them but they missed us completely except for one hole in the girl, and broke off. I guess their heart was not in it. In the target area we were attacked again by a Bf-109 in a vertical dive. He hit the cockpit area but the shell must have hit part of the frame, we could not see any damage. He came around again, missed and headed out of the area. We took a flak hit in the port wing over the target area but again, nothing major.
Our Bombardier, 2nd Lt. Morrison, must have had a good breakfast. He swears the bomb drop was perfectly on target so I hope assessment bears that out. We took no flak on egress but there were a lot of fighters.
We were jumped by no less than 4 FW-190’s. They were all over us and we barely scratched them. Three of the four missed and broke off for other parts of the formation. The last, attacking from 12 level, caused a superficial hit in the wing and began a slow lazy circle to reattack. Just as he was about to line up for another attack, a line of tracers from the Starboard Waist went beautifully into the engine and he fireballed, nosed over, and went down. I guess Sgt. Latimer is fairly well-healed from his previous wound.
The remainder of the mission was quiet until we were about 400 nm from base. There we were jumped again by 3 FW-190’s. Our escorts went after two of them, the third came in guns blazing but missed us and broke off. The remainder of the mission was uneventful and we landed back at base with no wounded.
Our Crew Chief, MSgt. Creen was pretty pleased with only minor holes to repair this trip.
I have 6 crew members I will put in for their 3rd Air Medal for 15 missions, and Sgt. Thompson, our Port Waist Gunner has earned his first. Also, if Bomb Assessment determines our bomb drop was as good as claimed, I would like to get some recognition or perhaps a medal for 2nd Lt. Morrison.
Respectfully submitted: 1st Lt. T. Hathaway, commanding SN: B-17G-20BO-42-31468 80th Bomb Squadron, 509th Bombardment Group H, 15th AAF

After Action Report (using QOTS and various optional rules) Zone 1: Fine weather for my first mission. We took off without any gremlin’s interfering and formed up. Zone 2-8: Nothing to report. Zone 9: The boredom was punctured by the cry of “Bandits!” and three 109 came at us with one shooed away by a P-38. Of the other two, one was an Ace who hit both wings before getting shot down by Riley (denied at interrogation). Zone 10: Nothing to report. Zone 11: Three 190 singled us out for their special attention. Caffrey nailed the 4:30 bandit, and the fighter went into a spin and about 2000 feet below, caught fire. The remaining 109 at 6 high avoided our fire and hit the oil tank of the #2 engine. Thankfully, it sealed and the fighter failed to add to the three hits when he came back for another try. Zone 12: At the IP, Goring’s Goons were making us feel as if we were the only bomber in the sky as they came in three waves.
The first was a single 109 at 4:30 low that Caffrey reported had rockets and was lining us up for a shot. Caffrey cut loose on him and his tracers swept the fighters wing and set off the rockets, blowing off its wing causing it to corkscrew its way to earth.
The second wave contained two more 109 with one falling (denied at interrogation) and one damaged.
After we had fought them off, five 190 came in from front, rear and port. Nazzaro in the chin turret hit a green pilot head on in the engine and wing and watched him spin out of control, then explode. An Ace at 9 low walked hits to the wings, hitting a fuel tank (sealed), wing root, aileron and taking out a flap. He returned at the same position where Caffrey hit him hard, and the Kraut left in obvious distress but fate unknown. Lansky hit the 3 high’s engine and along the port wing root and fuselage. It dipped and headed for the ground trailing fire and black smoke. No chute was seen. Another Jerry was damaged before the flak began to turn the blue sky into angry black puffs of terror.
Nazzaro kept his head about him aiming for the Marshaling rail yards, which were extremely visible for attack. He placed 30% on target and did his bit to disrupt the flow of German resources.
INBOUND
Emerging from the flak, four Romanian 112s swarmed us. Nazzaro scrambled into his turret, scored direct hits on a fighter which made a steep climb, rolled over and headed earthward. Riley in the tail shredded the port wing of another. The fighter turned turtle, flipping onto its back and fell out of control.
A second wave gave us a break and broke off. Zone 11: Two 110, both flown by obviously green pilots. Riley opened up on the 110 at 200 yards and the port engine exploded in flame and the outer wing snapped off causing the Me to spiral down out of control. Caffrey fired a short burst at the other 110 that forced the fighter to break away.
A second wave of five Romanian 109 moved in to try ensure that this would be my first and last mission. The bomber shook as almost every gun inside it hammered away in defense. Lansky scored hits on a fighter at 12 high, setting the engine on fire, the 109 made a steep climb, rolled over and headed earthward. Waist gunner Judner fired several bursts at another fighter which became engulfed in flame.
The rest failed to score hits on us and quickly moved off, a smaller group than when they had arrived. Zone 10-5: Nothing to report. Zone 4: With ammunition a little sparse for a couple of gunners, the Luftwaffe decided to pick on us again with two waves of Goring’s flying goons. Three 109 became one, thanks to our little friends, with the now lone Jerry coming at 10:30 high. Nazzaro’s fire caused black smoke to pour from the engine and flames darted from the fuselage. The plane banked to port and the pilot bailed out, giving Nazzaro his third victory of the mission.
Then, five 190 showed up, with our P-38s stepping in to engage three of them. Caffrey bagged his third of the day hitting the 12 low fighter which became engulfed in flame and hung there momentarily, then exploded. Zone 3-2: Nothing to report. Zone 1: We managed to land without any added drama and wearily taxied to our hardstand
The mission had more than enough drama for us. It was a long slog, hordes of enemy fighters opposed us, but the crew refused to become overwhelmed by their numbers and accounted for an incredible 11 fighters! We all came home safely and we hit the target.
I can’t speak for the rest of the crew, but I’m going to sleep for a week, if they’ll let me.

With the release of SGT Goodwin for flying duties, my original crew is back together again. It’s good to have Kirby back with the rest of the boys. He’s got a nasty-looking scar on his head, but says the docs tell him it will fade. He also says he’s not getting headaches anymore. Take-off and assembly: Our take-off is delayed somewhat when Lovely Ladies crashes off the end of the runway. The smoke column serves as a grim reminder of our fight against gravity as we wrestle the heavily laden Oblivion Express off the runway. Routine squadron assembly. OutboundZones 2-3: Nothing to report. Zone 4: A pair of ME-110s are chased off by the 82nd FG Lightnings. Zones 5-10: Nothing to report. Zone 11: A quartet of FW-190s attack. One of their rounds shatters the glass on Hartley’s turret and the nose compartment of the Express is exposed to a gale of -60º air. Hartley, at least, is okay. Target Zone (12) Aerial bombs are dropped into our formation. They pass us by harmlessly. The flak finds us on our run-in to the target. Heller is hit in the face, breaking his jaw. Riley patches him up and moves him to the radio room. Cobb’s bomb drop is okay, at best. Lots of fighters as we exit the flak zone. Three FW-190s are the first to attack. They make multiple passes on the Express, taking out our #2 engine which runs away. We get it feathered quickly. More aerial bombs which, again, miss. Then, it’s a pair of ME-109s. Maddox shoots one down coming in from 3:00 high. The other flies off after taking some hits from Pope and Riley. InboundZone 11: By now, the nose of the Express is an icebox. We radio our situation and drop out of formation, heading for warmer air. Unfortunately, our departure from the relative safety of the squadron is noticed by the enemy. We’re immediately set upon by three FW-190s and a ME-109. Thankfully, they all miss us. That’s followed by a trio of ME-109s, one sporting the markings of the Aeronautica Regală Română. Hartley gets one coming in from dead-ahead with the German pilot escaping his stricken Messerschmidt. Zones 10-5: We make the long, lonely flight across the Balkans. There are sporadic bursts of flak as we wander across enemy positions, but none hit us. Zone 4: Rockets come in on us. They miss. Three more FWs and a 109 attack. The 109 is taken out by a Lightning. The 190s all miss us. Zones 3-2: Nothing to report. Landing: When we take our position in the pattern, we don’t get a gear down indicator for our right main landing gear. We circle the field trying to lower it but with no success. We alert the tower and the crew takes up crash-landing positions. I manage to get the Express down smoothly on two wheels. When our airspeed drops of course, so does the right wing and there’s the shrieking of tortured metal and a shower of sparks. We come to safe stop accompanied by the emergency vehicles. Heller is loaded into the ambulance. His busted jaw will keep him off flying duties for about a month. When Hartley takes off his gloves, his right hand looks sunburned. Frostbite. He’s looked after and it is pronounced superficial. He’ll be ready to fly before the Oblivion Express is. She’s repairable, but it’ll keep SGT Clemens and company busy for several days. Take-off was incident-free, and the Maiden joined up with the formation for the journey to the target. Approximately halfway between Yugoslavia and Bulgaria we lost the supercharger on engine #4. We dropped out of formation and headed for base. We jettisoned our bombs once we were over the Adriatic Sea. We arrived at base and landed routinely. This was the 2nd mission in a row where engine problems caused us to be unable to bomb the target. Respectfully submitted: 1st Lt. J. George, commanding SN: B-17G-20BO-42-31438 80th Bomb Squadron, 509th Bombardment Group H, 15th AAF

80th BOMBARDMENT SQUADRON Mission #32, Bucharest, Romania - Marshaling Yard
Captain Marz called the men to attention as Major Wilkinson marched up the aisle. Despite being at attention, more than a few of the flicked their eyes to see They were pleased to see that there was a snap to his walk and his face was not hardened into anger. "Seats!" The men relaxed and sat down.
"Gentlemen, I was quite pleased with the squadron's performance on this mission. We launched thirteen aircraft. There were three aborts, but the rest of the squadron all bombed within the box. It was a good one for two reasons. The first is that every aircraft launched returned. This is not to say there were no casualties. But thankfully they were not numerous. The second, I've already alluded to. The average of bombs in the box is over 39%. Best in the squadron is Miss Behavin' at 92%. That earns Lieutenant Morrison a DFC." The room broke out in cheers and whistles but it quickly died out. "Second best in the squadron is Miss Keweenaw at 60%.
"Gunnery remains a squadron highpoint. The squadron claimed 21 enemy aircraft and 17 were confirmed. That includes one for Lieutenant Williams of The A Train who earned a DFC for becoming an ace." Again there was an outburst. Major Wilkinson looked at Williams then said with a slight smile, "It would be great if you earned a DFC for your aiming skill." That brought a big round of laughter.
When the room quieted down, the major continued, In addition to those DFCs, the following crewmen, Lieutenant Jack Dawkins of Bonnie and Lieutenant Sanders, Master Sergeant King, and Sergeant Scott will be receiving one for completing their tour and punching their tickets home." The men roared with approval. When they quieted down, Major Wilkinson said, "You gents did a great job on this mission. Scuttlebutt has it that the next one may be more of a tactical mission going after a precision target. For now, take a little time to relax. You earned it on this mission."
Captain Marz saluted the major as the men snapped to attention and the major left.

AFTER-ACTION REPORT
MISSION #33 - Bucharest, Romania - Marshalling Yards
The CO Major Jopp and CO Captain Alexis Vaillancourt enters the briefing room...
At the same time Sgt Wallace bellows: “Boxcars… Attention! ” … and everyone rises.
"Men of the Flying Boxcars, we got a bloody nose today. Three aircraft were lost: the Honey Bun who crashed and exploded on take-off, the Hells' Fury whose crew bailed out over the Adriatic Sea. The Royal Navy has searched the area and found no survivors other than a vacant rubber raft. Barney's Barn made it back home but she's CAT-E". The Major let that sink in a little bit as everyone knows the 78th lost two very experienced crews.
Continuing; "This all effected the lethality of our strike with 22% on-target. Congrats to the Gravel Gertie with 50% and Orange's Other Crate III 40%." Digging into his suite coat which seems to be oversized Jopp pulls out a box. " Yes...men I am pleased to award a DFC to Sgt, Benedict Jackson for (10) confirmed kills" A round of applause follows......
"Before I forget, congrats are in order for the crew of the Flying Home who completed their first mission."
The Major glances over and quick-nods to his XO's and with that the three walk toward the aisle and begin to leave.
“Boxcars… Attention” and the assembled throng rises again.
"Dismissed!"

79th Bomb Squadron: After Mission Summary Mission: 33 Mission Date: 17 May 44 Target: Bucharest, Romania - Marshalling Yard
1st Sgt. Parker barked from the room: “ATTENTION!”
Major Robinson came down the aisle with his staff in tow and dropped his folder down on the podium. He let them stand at attention for a few seconds while he collected his thoughts. Pecatonica has not come home. He had spent a lot of time in her cockpit.
“At ease gentlemen and take your seats.”
“First, I want to announce that Lt. Ryland of the Lucky Patch has been recommended for the Distinguished Flying Cross for his quick thinking in taking command of the plane, completing the mission, and bringing them home safely. Excellent work lieutenant.”
“Our bomb run was done quite a bit from the last mission. You are lucky that the new crew from Red Star drug up the total because otherwise we would have been down near 15%. Bombardiers will report for additional training the day after tomorrow. Bombardiers, I know that the flak, the fighters, and weather are making it hard to spot the target, but we have got to do better. And everyone else, bombardiers cannot hit the target if navigators don’t get us there, pilots don’t keep planes steady, and gunners don’t keep the enemy away. When we fail to destroy targets, they are going to send us to hit them again.”
“Let’s see how you all did today. . .”
