B-17G: Honey Bun Pilot: 1Lt. B. Harrison Assignment: 15th Air Force, 509th Bomber Group, 80th Squadron Mission Date: 2-May-1944 Mission No.: 27 Mission this Bomber: 2 Target for Today: Larissa, Greece Squadron Position: High Cell Leader Result: On-Target: 20% On his first mission, Pilot 1Lt B Harrison is assigned the High Cell Lead. Fortunately veteran Co-Pilot D. Diluzio has returned to duty to assist the rookie Pilot.
All action was centered around Larissa with several FW-190's disrupting our formation causing havoc with the inexperienced Pilot. Diluzio took over and tried his best to reassemble but it was too late. Over Larrisa the 190's stuck again damaging the elevator controls but bombs were dropped on target. Flak was nil on ingress and egress.
Credited with two German kills of significance; the 1st for Sgt. Reese manning the Top Turret on his 1st mission and S/Sgt M Lesjack in the Ball Turret who became an ACE.
Rockets were fired from afar once we departed Larissa but these all missed. The inbound segment was quite as 2Lt. Diluzio flew the bird all the way home. Something snapped with Pilot Harrison over Larissa and he had upon landing rushed to the infirmary as he was in a daze and incomprehensible.
That is all....

Once there a trio of FW-190ss jumped us. We tagged two of the enemy fighters, with the third tagging us. His attack took out my O2 and ventilated a few unimportant parts of the airframe. I plugged into one of the spare O2 ports. The offending 190 made another pass, and missed, but not without us leaving our calling card over his right wing. Entering the target zone we encountered no enemy aircraft. Flak was sparse and ineffective. With little to disturb his aim, Lt Galardi dropped 60% on target. Leaving the target a trio of Bf-109s attacked. Defensive gunnery was miserable, failing to hit any of the enemy. Only the third 109, coming in from 3 high hit us. Later we would find out his rounds took out the bomb release mechanism. The rest of his hits caused no important damage. On the 109’s second pass T/3 Townsend, in the ball turret, shredded the enemy’s right wing, sending him out of control. There was no sign of a chute. Skies were clear the rest of the mission. When S/Sgt Hancock’s crew were going over the damage to Next Objective and testing the systems they discovered our feathering controls were out. Lucky we didn’t need them. Weather made this tough for the cell leaders and Navigators.....100% cloud cover for most of the sortie but our Bombardier 2Lt 'Gator' Grahek was on his game and released ordnance on target with good results.
Three enemy fighters were engaged and all three skedaddled with battle damage inflicted by our 50 cal's.
Return was uneventful and landed in one piece.

Mission AAR: YADKIN RIVER QUEEN took off on time and smoothly formed up with rest of the 80th in the "High" squadron. Flew to target, encountered two 190's and two Me110's outbound; the 190's were chased off by our fighter escort and both of the 110's were shot down by our defensive gunfire. One of the 110's, coming at us from 9 low, was hit by bullets from Sgt. Palouse (BT) and Grosso (PW) and exploded. The second 110 was foolishly attacking us from 6 level and he was torn up by Sgt. Hoffman with our tail guns. We were not hit by flak. Our bombardier Lt. Sandoval hit target (marshalling yard) with estimated 30% of our payload (based on photographic record). Returned to base, landed safely. MSgt. Barber, maintenance supervisor, said YADKIN RIVER QUEEN will be ready for next mission.

Take-off went well, flight uneventful until we were over Greece. We were jumped by 2 Me109s. One at 1200 High and one at 600 Level. Hardwick (ball turret) claimed an Me109 but that claim was denied, one was driven off, but not before he shot the hell out of us. Bomb bay was hit but nothing serious happened, but our heating system was taken out. We dropped out of formation in order to keep going to the target. Our Altitude dropped below 10,000 feet. Near the Ip another Me 109 came in at us at 300 Level-Bubba had him and turned it into a fireball. Flak hit our wing flaps but we were still flying and functional. We managed to drop on target and headed home. We continued to receive Flak and had another Me109 come at us at 900 High. Timmerman got a solid hit on him and his right wing was shot off-no chute seen from the enemy aircraft. The remainder of the flight was uneventful, Landing was routine. Aircraft Should be ready to fly by tomorrow.

Sustained hits to Nose (1), PC (1), Waist (1) and Stbrd Wing (3). All superficial damage except for Nose where "Babe" lost compartment heat and Stbrd Wing Flap shot up. 3 of the 109's came around for a 2nd pass and 2 paid the price as our crew quickly ditched their jitters. "Babe" took down one approaching from 12 level, while Sparky (RR) and Catfish (TG) combined to riddle one to pieces coming in from 6 high. Upon entering target zone (8) we were greeted by 2 FW 190's, but their shots and ours were ineffective and they broke off. Proceeded to bomb run, but target completely obscured by clouds resulting in 0% dropped on target, possibly also due to Babe's freezing fingers. When leaving target zone, encountered light flak (no damage) followed by a lone ME 109 at 12 High that Babe chased off (FBOA) with no damage to us. Return flight was uneventful, other than Babe making regular trips to Sparky's radio room to mitigate frostbite risk which allowed us to stay in formation at altitude. Landed safely despite poor weather over base.

Mission 27 AAR Mission Date: 2 May, 1944
Target: Larissa, Greece – Marshalling Yard
Bomber SN: B-17G-20BO-42-31468; "Miss Behavin" 80th Bomb Sqdn., 509th (H) Bombardment Grp., 15th AF
Formation position: High Sqdn.
Pilot: 1st Lt. Tom Hathaway (Mission #9) Co-Pilot: 2nd Lt. Matt West (Mission #9) Bombardier: 2nd Lt. Ben Morrison (Mission: #9) Navigator: 2nd Lt. Evan Jones (Mission #9) Engineer: TSgt. Michael Godinez (Mission #9) Radio Operator: SSgt. Andy Mize (Mission #9) Ball Turret Gunner: Sgt. Craig Wiseman (Mission #9) Port Waist Gunner: Sgt. Michael Pope (Mission #7) Starboard Waist Gunner: Sgt. Tommy Latimer (Mission #2) Tail Gunner: Sgt. Robert Dyer (Mission #8)
Bomb Run: On/Off target, % HIT = On Target, 30%
Bomber Damage Sustained: Rudder hit, Radio compartment Heater out, multiple superficial hits (Peckham points =78)
Crew Casualties Sustained: Sgt. M. Pope, Port Waist Gunner - KIA
Enemy Aircraft Claims: 6: 5 x FW-190, 1 x Bf-109
I briefed the crew that we could lose escort at any time so to remain alert and call out fighters. Do not expect light resistance this trip, especially if we lose the escorts.
After takeoff, we formed up with the rest of the Squadron and took the high formation.
We encountered resistance exactly where intelligence said we would, all FW-190s, although, also true to intelligence, it was one pass and they were gone. We took no damage and flew on. Right after this attack, the escorts peeled off. We tightened formation although we were not expecting any more resistance until closer to the target.
Near the target zone, we were attacked again by a lone Bf-109 coming at us from 6 High. We opened up on him and missed. He however, did not, and put several rounds through the waist and one through the overhead window on the cockpit. The waist was the damage though, one round killing our Port Waist Gunner instantly. The enemy fighter circled around and while lining up, this time the Top hit him and caused the beginning of a smoke trail. He continued to attack however, but missed and flew on.
We did not have much time to recover because while beginning to make the turn towards the IP, there were suddenly FW-190s all over the sky. Losing SGT. Pope must have made the crew pretty mad because our guns opened up and immediately scored two kills. One by TSgt. Godinez, our Engineer, fire-balling one attacker, and our Tail Gunner, Sgt. Dyer blowing the wing off another. We took several hits but none causing damage. A few fighters attacked from different angles, were missed and in turn missed us and flew on.
Crossing into the target zone we saw little flak and thankfully none near us. The target was completely obscured so our Bombardier made his best guess based on a few other landmarks and dropped our load. On egress from the target zone there was no flak but there were fighters everywhere you looked.
Attacks were being called in from every direction. Our Ball Gunner, Sgt. Wiseman got a kill on a FW-190 just as it crossed from under the plane climbing across to the Starboard Waist Gunners sights. He said the entire fighter blew into pieces and flames. One fighter, a Bf-109 tried to attack from 9 Level but TSgt. Godinez saw him and fire-balled him as well. More fighters continued to attack. At one time we had sorted calls on 8 different enemy fighters. TSgt. Godinez got 2 more KIAs on the enemy, one at 9 High, and another at 9 Level. He really protected our weak side after the loss of Sgt. Pope. Our tail gunner, Sgt Dyer, got a FW-190 coming in at 6 high as well. He shot the engine out and blew off part of the tail according to SSgt. Mize in the radio room.
Seeing several of their comrades blown out of the sky caused the remaining enemy to break off and head for home, unwilling to become the next victim of Miss Behavin’ gunnery skills.
The remainder of the trip saw no action for us. And there was a safe landing for us even though the weather was poor.
I will put in Sgt. Pope for a Purple Heart and will write a letter to his family.
On a good note, TSgt. Godinez is one kill away from being a two-time Ace and our Tail Gunner, Sgt. Dyer, one kill from Ace and the ship, relatively undamaged.
I will make a request for another Gunner from the Spare pool for our next mission.
Respectfully submitted: 1st Lt. T. Hathaway, commanding SN: B-17G-20BO-42-31468 80th Bomb Squadron, 509th Bombardment Group H, 15th AAF

AFTER ACTION REPORT
Beach Bum took off and joined formation with no problems. Routine flight until zone 4 when we were approached by 2 Me-109's which were engaged and driven off by our fighter escorts. Nothing to report until we neared the target. As we neared the IP we encountered an area of exceptionally cold air which caused our port waist and tail guns to freeze up and jam. We encountered no enemy fighters. But we watched LUCKY PATCH, our formation lead, knock down multiple 109's and 110's. I told our crew that that was the kind of shooting we need to strive to achieve. At almost the same time rear gunner Conover reported that SUNDAY PUNCH, our tail end Charlie, was under attack, fighting off a hand full of enemy fighters and took some damage. He reported pieces falling off of SUNDAY PUNCH but they never broke formation so we were hoping the crew was ok. Flak was light and did no damage to our aircraft. We dropped our payload on target and since the target was obscured guessed that we put 30% on target. On the way home the crew were able to unjam both of our jammed guns and the rest of the trip home was uneventful. The weather was poor at base but we set down smoothly with all hands safe and accounted for.
No damage to the aircraft and no injuries to the crew.

"Good to have back, wolfie! That other chap was nice, but he didn't have your skills." -"Good to see you as well, Flanagan. How's the rest of the crew holding up?" SGT Wolf sits down on a small stool in front of the tent, resting his injured leg as much as possible
"They're all fine, last mission was a bit of a milk run. That Hangar queen wasn't very stable though, there were multiple times it almost sounded like she was breaking apart. Especially ol' Flanagan wasn't happy with her." Flanagan, hearing his name, pops his head out of the tent and starts smiling
"Ah, there you are. We were wondering already if you were going to skip out on us, while you took some more days off." -"What, me? Never. I wouldn't trust any of those guys from the spare pool to keep you safe from the krauts!" Lieutenant Blackburn comes walking back from the mission briefing
"Sorry to disappoint you guys, but we're flying out again today. Also means you have to get off your lazy ass, wolfie. No sitting around, actuall soldiering, you hear that?" REPORT - CONFIDENTIAL as written by Isaac Blackburn, dictated by Richard ArcherTake-off went fine, and we were mostly left alone until we were in Greece itself. A flight of 4 BF109s attacked us (one seemed to be a bit new), but the crew valiantly defended the bomber. After a few passes of the enemy, we managed to shoot down 3, with another one going down in a stall, while we only suffered some minor damage in return. A quick check of the plane revealed that some bullets had hit into the bomb bay, but they must've missed the bombs or been duds, so we seemed to be fortunate once again. ( OOC: rolled superficial damage on the bomb bay doors)
Over the target zone, we came under heavy attack however. A first flight of 5 FW190s attacked us, and while we claimed one of them, and managed to damage 3 others as well, they hit back hard as well. 1LT Archer was wounded in his right hand, they hit some of the flight instruments, the navigator's charts were shredded, together with innumerable holes in the plane. It wasn't the end of our troubles however, as more flights soon appeared. A FW190 and a ME110 were up first, who also managed to get some damage (and wounding S/SGT Kirby), but after some determined return fire, we managed to set them both aflame and see them fall to the ground. After that, 3 BF109s attacked us, and they managed to take down the radio, as well as the nose guns and adding even more holes to our plane, but not before we'd taken down one of them. The others were hit as well, and dived away quickly afterwards. While lining up for the bomb run, flak tried to hit us, and while they got close, we were lucky enough to not get hit. We got a lucky break in the clouds just as Lt. Fuller was going to drop on his gut feeling, so he quickly adjusted his aim slightly, and we managed to hit 30% on target. Just after dropping bombs, we were quickly harassed again, this time by 2 ME110s. Slowly climbing up to our height, we were able to zero in on them quickly and after we shot down the first one, the second broke of his attack, but not before we also put some good hits on him. The rest of the flight back was relatively uneventful, until the Gremlin Airforce came out just before we crossed into Italy again. Apparently the top turret had seized up, and while our Engineer tried to fix it in the air, it seems the ground crew will have to just install a new one. On that note, the crew chief chewed me out again, telling me how much extra work I was giving him with all the damage the plane incurred. At least he seemed happy that we hadn't lost another engine, though when my copilot suggested some faulty wiring might've caused the top turret to break, he almost lost it, and quickly got of there... The Plane and my men will be ready for flight duty within a day or two. Attached you will find additional documents, including the requests for a number of awards. Some of my gunners showed excellent marksmanship today, and I think at least some of them deserve some kind of recognition. Signed, 1Lt Richard Archer B-17G-90BO-43-38476 Fortunate Sons 509(H)BG/79SQ

I have to say, I do like the nose art on her.… Mickey Mouse from Fantasia. Here’s hoping Mickey brings me luck. After just one shake-down flight practicing bomb runs with my new crew, we’re off on a real mission. They are all combat vets and view me with some suspicion. I’ll try not to screw up. Take-off and squadron assembly is uneventful. I see my first German fighter as we cross the Adriatic coastline. It’s immediately taken on by a Mustang. A lot more Germans appear over Greece. Dekker and Ferguson flame an FW-190 attacking from 10:30 high. We get shot up by another Focke-Wolfe … it seems bad to me, but everything still works. Ferguson jams both his guns. No Germans target us over Larissa, and I get my first experience with flak. Can’t say that I care for it much. Johns gets good bomb drop, or so it appears. I note one Liberator dropping out of formation as we head for home. Uneventful flight home. Ferguson eventually clears both jams, but his guns aren’t needed. Landing is a bit dicey. Turns out we lost an aileron, but we're home safe and sound. V/r, 1LT Ernie Pike, First Pilot B-24J Sorcerer’s Apprentice 78th BS, 509th BG (H), 15th AF

Takeoff/Zone 1: Easy takeoff. Zone 2-3: Nothing to report. Zone 4: Just as we waved goodbye to the Italian coastline I heard Sgt Owens' voice key-in frantically over the intercom. My first thought was maybe it was a long range enemy patrol, like Maj Beech had warned about, but no such luck. There was an oil fire in our number 4 engine he informed me, almost tripping over his words. I swore under my breath and activated a starboard fire extinguisher charge. Fortunately it worked the first time and the fire died out, but the engine was already a goner. Just like that our mission was over almost before it even started. I had S/Sgt Holland radio anyone he could get a hold of what was happening as we began to lose speed and drop out of formation. There was no way we could keep up with the rest of the squadron now, and we were still so far from Larissa our only realistic option was to turn for home and live to fight another day. We jettisoned our bombs in the Adriatic and made the turn for Giulia.
INBOUND Zone 4-2: Nothing to report. Zone 1/Landing: We landed quietly with our tails between our legs. I couldn't help but feel we had let the squadron down on just our second mission even though it was truly no fault of our own. I could tell the rest of my crew was feeling the same way as we exited our fort, heads down and tight lipped except for a few hushed whispers about having "words" with our crew chief, or any other mechanics unlucky enough to be in sight. And speaking of which, I should probably go find him before my men do; but honestly I can't blame them. Two missions in a row, our first two missions even, and we've had mechanical issues. If I do find that weasel I'll have some "words" of my own for him.

80th BOMB SQUADRON Mission #27, Larissa, Greece - Marshaling Yard AAR
As Major Simmons entered the room he was pleased to hear Captain Marz bark out "Ten hut!" Apparently his lung was much better, something Simmons already knew from the yelling coming from the XO's office. Being on non-flying status had taken its toll on Marz's temper. Simmons strode to the front, telling the men to sit. "Gentlemen, the last mission wasn't a terribly bad show. The Luftwaffe seems to be getting worn down. At least we can hope that's the case. Despite it being a fairly easy mission, we still lost two men, Lieutenant Pillion from Castle in the Sky and Sergeant Pope from Miss Behavin'.
"Despite the weather, the bombing was pretty good. The squadron put over thirty-five percent of its bombs inside the box. That was a good, solid performance. Best in the squadron goes to Miss Keweenaw at 75% and second best goes to Bonnie and Double Bomb, both at 50%. Marksmanship continues to be good. We had 28 claims and 24 and a third confirmed.
"That's about all there is to say. Make sure you guys get some down time. The rumor mill is buzzing with the possibility of another long mission in the offing. And we'll be the bottom squadron. So I want you all as rested and refreshed as possible." Marz called the room to attention as Simmons paced his way to the exit. ----------------------------- STATISTICAL ADDENDUM

79th Bomb Squadron: After Mission Summary Mission: 27 Mission Date: 2 May 44 Target: Larissa, Greece - Marshalling Yard
1st Sgt. Parker barked from the room: “ATTENTION!”
Major Robinson came storming up the aisle and slammed his clipboard on the podium. Normally at this moment he told the them to relax and sit down. This afternoon he let them all stand at attention. The major turned to the chalkboard and wrote “15%” and pointed at it in silence.
“Take your seats gentlemen.” “Does anyone know what I wrote fifteen percent on the board?” He didn’t wait for anyone to respond. “That was today’s bombing percentage. Half of you didn’t even hit the target AT ALL!” “Never mind hitting the broad side of a barn. You all couldn’t hit a giant marshalling yard. Thousands of square feet of rail yard to aim at and we hit almost nothing!”
Major Robinson took a minute to let it settle in and switched to a softer tone.
“Guys, this must get better. We are flying these missions at considerable risk to ourselves and to the brave fighter pilots who protect us. I am very pleased that you all made if home safely today, but when we don’t destroy targets, we will have go hit them again.” “Bombardiers will report in the morning for refresher training and we will be flying practice bomb runs before the next mission.”
“Let’s see how you all did today. . .”

AFTER-ACTION REPORT
MISSION #27- Larissa, Greece
As the CO Major Jopp and XO Major Garfield enters the room the chatter subsides.
At the same time, Sgt Wallace bellows: “Boxcars… Attention! ” … and everyone rises.
"At ease men" starts the Major who is over his cold. "Excellent mission to Larissa with 41% on-target...very impressive gentlemen !" A brief round of applause follows and the Major continues "Casualties and bomber damage was light though the Orange's Other Crate was later classified as CAT-E. The Grim Reaper had to divert to Lecce and is still there awaiting parts.'
Looking at the XO Major Garfield, "Congrats Paul on your 25th and for those of your crew....eight of them. "Major Garfield has agreed to stay on as XO for five more missions". Jopp then awards the DFC to Garfield followed by Garfield awarding DFC's to his crew.
"Effective immediately the 78th will use an Assembly Plane to assist in squadron formations and you are not going to miss her !" Nodding to the XO to unveils a photograph of a polka dotted B-24........
"This is the Heavenly Body, a battle-worn B-24D piloted by Lt. Mickelsen and manned by a crew of five she will be first to take off. This is your target to assembly into your assigned slots. She will be firing yellow flares and of course you can't miss her. After a course is set for the first waypoint she will depart and return to base. She is unarmed. Any questions ? "
None were raised.
The Major glances over and quick-nods to his XO, who begins to walk toward the aisle. The two begin to leave.
“Boxcars… Attention” and the assembled throng rises again.
"Dismissed!"
