First (and hopefully last) mission with someone not part of our standard crew. They were a bit wary of him at first, but he soon proved himself a worthy temp replacement for Wolf, especially after they lit up a bogie attacking our rear. Take-off was uneventful, and the rest of the squadron quickly took their position behind us. The flight towards the target was uneventful, though the crew complained about the crappy conditions of the plane. It was the same in the cockpit, and one of the fuel gages was stuck… I’m hoping my bird gets repaired soon, I’m not a fan of the hangar queens. Just before we got to the target, 2 flights tried to attack us, but the first one was fully driven off by friendlies, while from the second flight 2 FW190s came through, though one was quickly despatched by the combined firepower of the top turret and tail guns, while the other one got some quick shots off before he turned away. Over the target, flak was light, but some exploded very close to our boat, but didn’t seem to hit anything ( OOC: a lucky self seal on the fuel tank), and while we were rocked hard, Lt Fuller still managed to get some good hits. Some of the bombs landed nicely inbetween the hangars and other structures. Just after we turned around, we saw another flight trying to attack us, and the 2 that broke through our escort were easily dispatched, even though one of them got a few hits. The rest of the flight back was uneventful, and landing was fine (even if the plane felt a bit rickety). Signed, 1Lt Richard Archer B-17G-90BO-43-38476 Fortunate Sons 509(H)BG/79SQ

Debrief: Take off went as about routine as it could be-no problems. Flight was calm until we turned into the target area-we were attacked by an FW190 at 600H, he missed but then he came around for a second pass at 600 low and riddled us pretty good, Ailerons and the Tail Plane were hit several times, I felt the plane fight me for control at times but we were able to avoid the flak and hit the target. On the way back-we were again attacked by an FW190 coming right at us in a vertical dive-he missed, and his second pass was at our 300 level-Bubba was on it and tore the wing right off of him, we didnt see a chute as he spun wildly into the clouds. Landing was a bit hairy as those ailerons began to act up, but we were able to get her on the ground in one piece. The ground chief tells me that the plane will be ready to go tomorrow.

After Action report: (using TfT) (Optional rules: Crew-chief effects; Crew Stress; Jasta 6 German Pilot Quality; Peckham’s Random Event Variant Table; Axis Aircraft 1942-45).
Nice to be back in the driving seat again! I thanked Dwight for looking after the plane and crew so well – especially on that long last trip to Ploesti, then endured the normal mickey-taking any returning injured go through.
A nice short hop for my first mission back – just over the Adriatic, then home again. Hopefully, it will be as easy as it looks; that short trip to Rome just over a week ago killed one crew and put three of us in hospital.
Mission: Thankfully, it was a very simple mission. Two FWs and an Me410 engaged us on approach to the target. The Lightnings saw off one of the FWs; Magic blew up the 410 ahead and above us, while the remaining 190 off our starboard side was clipped by Sanford, took a pot shot at us which missed, then dived away home.
Walcott was happy with his first drop after his return from the hospital, the recce boys later informing us that 30% of the bombs went on target.
No bandits bothered us as we turned for home, but streaks of smoke to port heralded one of the Luftwaffe’s rocket attacks. Thankfully, none exploded near enough to damage us.
A single 109 thought about having a go as we got about halfway across the Adriatic, but the P-38s soon saw him off, and the rest of the trip was a cruise in the sun!
A nice easy slide back into the war. No damage, no casualties, and the Gunnery Board were on Magic’s side this time, giving him full credit for the 410 he smoked.
A cheerful evening in the bar, catching up with the guys’ stories of the missions we, the wounded, missed, plus we bought a few rounds for the replacements that kept our seats warm while we were away.

AFTER ACTION REPORT
We have been assigned t the 80th Squadron – this seems to have a lot of new crews in in and we were in good company with the crews of “Duck Soup”, Northern Queen” “Rosie” and castle in the sky” whom we had trained with and flew over from the States with. Its good to be with crews we know as there are a lot of veteran crews in the 509th and they seem to have some reluctance getting to know us new boys.
After the briefings we assembled next to the plane. I kept it short, telling the men to look sharp and to be lucky.
Take off: Good.
Z2-Z3 NSTR
Target outbound: A FW-190 tried to come up at us from 6 level but was chased away by our fighter escort. Soon after he had gone we must hav hit a patch of cold air as the bombardier, Turret and left waist reported that their guns had frozen and jammed – not great as we headed towards the target. We were attacked by 2 Me 210S coming in at 12 High and 130 level. The one at 130 was shot down by our escorts. The one at 12 high missed with his first burst, then rolled around to attack us from 130 level. Our defensive fire was ineffective but fortunately he missed on his second run in at us and dove away. Flak was light and we only received some light cosmetic damage to the hull from fragments of a flak round.
Bomb run: 2LT Mason took control of the plane and dropped on target. We estimated around 50% of our bombs hit, not bad for our first mission, lets hope we keep it up! As the group pulled away from the target, we saw a plane in the high group get swarmed by enemy fighters. Despite fending most of them off, one must have gotten through as we saw an explosion take the wing of the plane. It rolled over onto its back burning and fell towards the ground. Two chutes were observed.
“Oh my – look there goes one of the high group!” yelled T/SGT Havens in the turret. The burning plane, minus a wing fell towards the ground.
Anyone get out – do you see any chutes? 1LT Burke called.
“Yeah, I see one…no two” SGT Crabtree called over the intercom. “Poor bastards.”
Target inbound: Sobered by the sight of one of our bombers going down, we left the target behind. Fortunately, the flak let up and no enemy fighters attacked. All of our frozen guns except the bombardiers were cleared.
Z3: NSTR. The enemy left us alone, but we did see the lead bomber of the low squadron drop out of formation.
Z2: NSTR
Landing. Good landing.
A nice milk run for our first mission. Our defensive fire needs some work, fortunately the escorts picked up the slack. A good hit with the bombs was recorded. Not sure there is much we can do about guns freezing in the atmosphere. But the crew worked well together for their first operational mission. The enlisted men seemed largely unperturbed by the mission but the officers took longer to relax after the mission.

80th BOMB SQUADRON Mission #26, Mostar, Yugoslavia - Airdrome AAR
Captain Marz stood wobbly at the front of the room. As he saw Major Simmons enter he attempted to call the room to attention but the lung injury was clearly bothering him. Simmons barked out for the men to be seated. He looked at Marz and said, "I told you it wasn't necessary for you to be here. You're still recovering." Marz hoarsely answered, "I was getting bored..." Simmons cut him off. "Fine! I get it! You're here. Now sit down and take it easy!" The men didn't see the eye wink that Simmons gave Marz as he sat down on one of the benches.
"Well, gentlemen, quite the milk run that one was. The squadron didn't suffer one wound. That's the kind of mission I like seeing. In addition, the bombing was good, The squadron put almost forty percent of its bombs inside the box. The leading drops were by Rosie, Northern Queen, and Wild Child, all at 60%. Second best was also a tie among The A Train, Witchcraft, and Double Bomb all at 50%. Gunnery, what little of it there was, was also good. Ten claims resulted in seven confirmed kills."
'Now, this was a short hop against minimal opposition. It was a good mission to catch our collective breath after Ploesti. On top of that, we were Middle Squadron. So I want to remind you that anyone who thinks that they're all going to be like Mostar is sadly mistaken. So relax as you can and enjoy yourselves."
He turned to Marz who appeared to be readying himself to stand. Simmons barked out, "Don't! Go back to your office and relax." Marz sat back down as Simmons dismissed the men. ----------------------------- STATISTICAL ADDENDUM

78TH BOMB SQUADRON
AFTER-ACTION REPORT
MISSION #26- Mostar, Greece
As the CO Major Jopp and XO Major Garfield enters the room the chatter subsides.
At the same time, Sgt Wallace bellows: “Boxcars… Attention! ” … and everyone rises.
"At ease men" starts the Major who is nursing a cold as he begins todays briefing. "Well done. Initial estimates is 28% on target and 10 2/3 credited kills with the loss of one aircraft, the Angel on My Shoulder who crashed at take off and later classified as CAT-E". Taking a moment to blow his nose and clear his throat the Major continues....
"Congrats to Msgt Newton who achieved Quintuple Ace Status of the Laid Back Lady. With this sortie to Mostar Cpt. McQuinn, 1Lt Marcum, 1Lt Tobin and S/Sgt Short completed their 25th missions, the first for the Flying Boxcars and a ticket home. In addition Sgt. Jackson of the Orange's Other Crate was credited with his fifth kill and confirmed as an Ace."
Stepping back as Major Garfield awards their DFC's and then reapproaches the podium......"More good news, five bothers-in-arms were recently returned from Yugoslavia where they were rescued and protected by local Partisans. Remember not to dump any ordnance over Yugoslavian airspace as we could hurt our allies and our own men"
The Major glances over and quick-nods to his XO, who begins to walk toward the aisle. The two begin to leave.
“Boxcars… Attention” and the assembled throng rises again.
"Dismissed!"

We added Sgt. Tommy Latimer as a new Starboard Waist Gunner. He was newly arrived as a replacement and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time to pick him up for the crew. Seems like a decent enough guy.
After takeoff, we formed up with the rest of the Squadron in the middle formation. We were anticipating little action on this short mission but I warned the crew to be aware.
We only encountered one fighter, near the target zone, and it was jumped by several escorts before it got near us.
Flak was light but we still took a couple hits in the tail damaging the Tail Gunners oxygen and suit heater. Sgt. Dyer was on the intercom saying keep the formation and bomb, he would deal with it and was ok. I told him once we cleared the target zone to abandon the position. He never did but did not suffer any ill effects.
We were on target and our Bombardier figured most of the bombs struck home.
The remainder of the trip saw no action for us.
Respectfully submitted: 1st Lt. T. Hathaway, commanding SN: B-17G-20BO-42-31468 80th Bomb Squadron, 509th Bombardment Group H, 15th AAF
