To: CAPT Bruno Pierce, S-4
From: CAPT Roger Oveur, S-7
RE: Orphaned a/c
It has been brought to my attention that we have an orphaned bomber on our hands in the 80th, due to a foul-up in the paperwork. Private Dix, a B-17F, is now without a crew. Her crew, with 1LT William Gillespie in command, was lost along with Call House Madam yesterday.
In what has become rather typical of Army paperwork of late, a 1LT West reported in to my office this morning for squadron assignment along with his crew. The information I had received from 15th AF HQ was that West would be reporting in without an aircraft assigned to them. I had planned to assign them to Private Dix which is a good ship, judging from the eight mission marks painted on her. Much to my surprise, LT West informed me that he and his crew had flown over with their own G model B-17, Mountain Men. So much for the accuracy of Army paperwork.
We thus find ourselves with Private Dix on our hands with no crew assigned to the bomber. I recommend that the aircraft be assigned to the spare pool.

Changes regarding the B-17G model?
I assume the bombardier cannot man the chin gun in the target zone because he's focusing on bombing?
Anything else? Is there a table or chart somewhere?
Thanks, TomT

I have not seen one for the B-17G, but I have seen one for the B-24J. On the B-24J, the Navigator can also man the Nose Turret. Below is how the crew can be realigned for the 24J. You might be able to apply tis (somewhat) to the 17G. Pilot Co-Pilot Navigator / NT Bombardier Engineer Radio Op / Waist Rt Waist / NT Ball Turret Left Waist / NT Tail Gunner I tend to send the Right Waist to man the Nose Gun, the Navigator to the radio room, and the Radio Op to the Right Waist. There is no hard rule regarding the Bombardier manning the nose gun or Chin Turret on either the F or G models. There has been debate over the years and the 509th doesn’t have a House Rule. Here is one discussion on BGG boardgamegeek.com/thread/423854/article/3688505#3688505 . I recall another discussion where a player would only have his Bombardier man the gun(s) on the first wave. If there were multiple waves the Bombardier was focused on the Norden bombsight and couldn’t shoot. Maybe Jim Pink jasta6 has insight.

I do have my personal house rule that I have used in campaigns I am in. It is based off the one mentioned by Lou above, Bombardier only shoots in the first wave, but of course... I modified it a little. Can't help myself. Here is my house rule for both B-17:QotS and TfT; House rule: First I divide the Zone attacks into three phases, representing three time segments. This way I can assignee each attacking German wave to a phase. If there are three waves they are assigned with wave one going to phase 1, wave two goes to phase three, etc. If there is only two enemy fighter waves attacking then I roll 1D6. Using an even/odd roll to see where the first wave goes, If Even the first wave is in phase 1, if Odd the first wave is in phase 2. If the first wave is in phase 2 then the remaining fighter wave is in phase three. If the first wave is in phase one then I use the even/odd roll to see where to place it. In a one wave attack, I just roll a 1D6 with these results, a 1 or 2 being the first phase, 3 or 4 being the second phase and 5-6 being the third phase. Now you can cross reference the below chart to see if the bombardier can shoot at the attacking fighters; House Rule-Bombardier Attacks in Target Zone:
| Phase 1 Initial Attack
| Phase 1 1st Successive
| Phase 1 2nd Successive | Phase 2 Initial Attack
| Phase 2 1st Successive | Phase 2 2nd Successive | Phase 3 Initial Attack | Phase 3 1st Successive | Phase 3 2nd Successive | Can Bombardier Attack? | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | NO | NO | NO | NO | NO |
