Ship Bombing Rules Change:
10.20 Bombing of Shipping and Port Facilities
10.20.1 Navigation
Description: Half the battel when bombing shipping was getting to the correct location of the fleet or convoy. We use a Table A1 to replicate the navigator’s calculations to plot a course. You will roll 2D6, add any modifiers that apply and check your modified result to the chart. This result will affect your searching ability (Table A2) when trying to locate your quarry.
Process: Roll 2D6 at the end of each zone to see if you are on course or off course. Keep track of how many consecutive off course results you get. Use a spare die to help you keep track. This result will be added to your die role when conducting your search in the target zone to find your shipping target.
10.20.2 Searching
Description: The other Half of the battle is finding the fleet or convoy in the designated target zone. Once you have been able to make it to the designated target zone you will need to search the zone to find the ships your squadron is assigned to bomb. This is accomplished by rolling up to three times on the Search table, A2, per turn. If after three search rolls you may spend a second turn searching by making up to three more attempts. If you still have not found the ships you can do one more turn to search. If after the third turn, nine search rolls, you must break off the search and head home. Remember you will roll for fighters for each of the two extra turns you spend in the target zone. (For Mission 37 only - added by Limburger: If you do not find the ships in the first two turns they have made it inside Bizerte Harbor. You automatically find them on Turn 3 if you elect to continue the mission and follow them in, but you also face the Flak emplacements surrounding the harbor. Also, if you elected to to continue searching after the first three rounds (1 turn) you are out of formation.)
Once you have spotted any ships you do not have to roll again. Go to Table A3 to confirm your sighting and see what type of ships you found. If there are any war ships in the sighted convoy the proceed to Tables A4 or A5 to identify the exact ships you have found. Please note that at the bottom, if you have found War ships, you may come under flak attacks from any military ships you find. Use either note (a) or note (b) to verify the Flak intensity.
Process: Roll one 2D6 on Table A3 to determine what ships you have come across. If there are any War Ships in the mix, then Roll on Table A4 in the proper column to determine what exact ships you have found. If you have found a Battle Fleet, then roll on Table A5 instead. You will roll 1D6 to determine which of the three Battle Fleets you have found. War Ships are designated by their military codes, AR, BB, CA, CL, DD, DE and SS
10.20.2 Bomb Run and Damage
Description: Once you have found and identified your targets, you may commence your attack using Table A7 and Table A8. Bombing ships was not an easy task. For any mission where you are bombing ships in the open sea/ocean use this alternative Bombing Table and Damage Table. Due to the smaller size of a of your target, i.e. a single ship or a dispersed group of ships, there will be negative modifiers employed. Any stationary ship is subject to a -1 modifier and moving ships will incur a -2 die roll modifier to hit. These modifiers have been added to the modifiers with the Bomb Run Table.
Process: To determine if you were on target roll 2D6 on Table A7 and apply any modifier that pertains to your bomber’s situation. If you are on target, then the number of ships hit will be the die roll amount you are above three, 3. This means that if you rolled a modified to hit of 5, then you have hit two ships. i.e. Modified die roll of 5 minus 3 equals 2. If this number exceeds the number of ships you have found then any exta is lost. To determine which ships are hit roll randomly or choose the ships from the identification roll (Table A4 or A5.) If your result was “Off Target” then proceed straight to Table A.8.
If your bomb run was “On Target,” roll once for each ship hit on Table A8 sub Table A8.1. If you are Off Target, then just roll once on the “Off Target. If by chance you roll a near miss you do not need to define the ship hit as your crew would not realize they came that close.
If you wish to know what size in tonnage the ship you hit was for the merchant ships roll 2D6 on Table A.6 under either the Freighter or Tanker columns.
10.20.3 Rejoining Formation
If you spot the shipping on the initial turn (three search rolls) and drop your bombs on target, then you are able to re-join formation. If you fail to spot the targets on the first turn of searching (three search rolls), you have the option to abort the bomb run, which will not count towards your mission count, unless enemy aircraft are encountered, but the advantage is re-joining the formation for the flight home.
If you fail to spot the enemy shipping on the first turn of searching, and you chose to continue the search, you will continue the entire mission out of formation.
