OUTBOUND: Enemy fighters in Zone 4 driven off by our escort. TARGET ZONE 6: Flak inflicted minor damage both coming and going. In between bombs were released by our new Togglier at the same time that the pathfinder was dropping, so if they hit the target we hit the target. (40%) Two waves caught up to the group as we turned for home. Out of the three fighters that came in at 6 o'clock, we destroyed one, damaged the second, and were hammered by the third. Another fighter hit us from below. Between the two of them we suffered two wounded men, and damage to the port wing root and #4 engine. INBOUND: Nothing to report. Safe landing. OUTBOUND: In Zone 6 the Oxygen system failed. We were tempted to head for the target anyways, as this was the first mission in a month where we could see the ground, but without the Norden bombsight we decided to just turn around and jettison the bombs while we were still over Germany. Bombs were released approaching a likely crossroads but wind drift carried them into some fields. INBOUND: We retraced our route back towards England, knowing that it was mapped out to avoid Flak concentrations; yet we still had a close call with a few shell fragments slicing through the fuselage. No enemy fighters were spotted. Safe landing. Cleavon McCoy, 2 LT, USAAF, Commanding B-17: MOUNTAIN DEW : B-17G-90BO 43-38544 80th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment Group

OUTBOUND- ZONES 1-8: Nothing to Report.
ZONE 9: We got our first close-up look at the business end of the new ME-262 jets. Our Engineer swears that he damaged one, while in exchange the two of them perforated our starboard wing, though they missed anything valuable. TARGET ZONE 10: Multiple waves swarmed around the 509th, both coming and going. The first wave was kept at bay by the defensive gunnery of the formation. Next came a couple familiar Butcher Birds. One was run off by our Little Friends, while his partner was damaged by the Top Turret. Close, but no cigar for our Engineer. The third wave had another of the Luftwaffe’s Wonder Weapons – a ME-163 rocket plane. It dove on us, and wounded our Togglier as it raced into the clouds below. INBOUND: Nothing to report. AFTER ACTION REPORT (Target for Today - Joe Carter's Variant)
OUTBOUND- ZONES 1-9: E/A harassing the group were repulsed by the other bombers in our formation. We did notice that the aileron controls were getting stiff. TARGET ZONE 10: The first wave of German fighters approaching Berlin were all run off by our Little Friends. The second wave was one of those rocket ME-163, that screamed by so fast that nobody, including the German pilot, was able to bring his guns to bear. I wouldn't be surprised if everybody in the squadron was convinced that bandit was heading for them. Flak was intense as we neared the German capital, but we didn'y suffer any damage - all cosmetic - until after we released our bombs. Again we faced multiple waves of bandits after we cleared the Flak Zone. This time a Butcher Bird got through to spray us, wounding our co-pilot. Our Starboard Cheek Gun jammed trying to drive that 190 away, and wouldn't get cleared until we were over the Netherlands. INBOUND - Zone 9: Two more waves caught us south of Wittenberge. The P-51s took care of three of the five attackers. The two that got through - a 190 in the first wave and a ME-163 in the second wave - peppered us. Our Tail Gunner was seriously wounded and the Heat for the Togglier was knocked out, with the remaining damage being less severe - holes in the rudder and elevator. Again some of the damage was self-inflicted, as both guns in the Ball Turret jammed and were not fully repaired until we were over the North Sea. INBOUND - Zone 8: Our Togglier moved to the heating rheostat in the Tail, after moving our Tail Gunner to the floor of the Radio Room. This allowed us to remain in formation. (Got a Lady Luck Smile in Zone 6.)SUDBURY: Safe landing. Cleavon McCoy, 2 LT, USAAF, Commanding B-17: MOUNTAIN DEW : B-17G-90BO 43-38544 80th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment Group

OUTBOUND - ZONE 4: Radio failed. Attempts to repair it in the next hour were futile. OUTBOUND - ZONE 8: E/A kept their distance. TARGET ZONE 9: We suffered superficial Flak damage right before releasing our bombs into the undercast below. Sure hope we were over the correct country. Two 109s and an HE-162 converged on our bomber 10 minutes after rallying. One 109 disappeared into the clouds, followed by a couple of our Little Friends. Another 109 was damaged by our Radio Operator, who didn't have anything better to do after giving up on repairing his set. As for the jet, we tried and failed to hit hime while he did some cosmetic damage to our skin. INBOUND : Nothing to Report. SUDBURY: Safe landing. OUTBOUND: Other than a near Mid Air collision ascending through the clouds for assembly there was nothing to report. TARGET ZONE 8: Multiple waves swarmed around the 509th, but the three bandits that seemed interested in our bomber were all discouraged by the boys in the Mustangs. Flak was a different story, as multiple shell fragments sliced through the tail section, knocking out the oxygen in addition to other miscellaneous damage. Bombs were released on command. I elected to descend to 10,000 feet, as opposed to moving my Tail Gunner into the Radio Room and continuing without eyes or stingers on our tail. In hindsight it was a mistake, misinformed by the quiet outbound leg of the trip and the presence of our Little Friends. Initially it seemed to be the correct decision, as the five fighters we encountered leaving Hanover only inflicted minor damage while our Tail Gunner contributed to knocking a ME-210 out of the sky. INBOUND – ZONES 7 & 6: A variety of five E/A found us on our homeward leg. Little Friends took care of three while our defensive gunnery damaged the remaining two. So far, so good. INBOUND – ZONES 5: Over the Zuider Zee two ME-262s caught up to us. In spite of evasive maneuvers, their 30MM shells wreaked havoc throughout the B-17. By the time they headed back to Germany half the crew were bloodied – two dead, three groaning. Engine #1 was in shambles, along with numerous holes in the Port Wing. Navigation was out with a sea of white around us, and the North Sea beneath that. Fortunately the Radio worked so we could get a seeing eye dog up there to guide us home. SUDBURY: Safe landing. Unlucky Mission 13...
OUTBOUND: In Zone 4 the Port Waist Gunner’s heat rheostat burned out. SGT Adams was moved into the Radio Room. Enemy fighters in Zone 9 were kept away by the defensive fire of other bombers. TARGET ZONE 10: Rockets flashed by while both approaching and leaving without damaging Mountain Dew. On the other hand Flak made an impact. During the Bomb Run the Bombardier was seriously wounded and in spite of quick action by Navigator t toggle the bombs only 6% hit in the designated target area. Immediately after the bomb release more shell fragments sliced into the nose, wounding the Navigator and killing the Bombardier; but the eventual kill shot caused a fuel leak from the starboard wing. Sgt Adams was moved from the Radio Room to the Chin Turret. INBOUND – ZONES 6: Engine #2 just quit. INBOUND – ZONES 5: The pilot decided to make a belly landing in one of the nice soft flat fields in the Netherlands. The port wing tip dug into the mud and the bomber ripped open and tumbled, killing the crew.

Bombs were off target. If the weather allows we definitely need more training flights. INBOUND – ZONE 3: A 190 flashed right over the cockpit , and my Co-pilot jumped out of his seat. Guess you don't know how a man will react until he sees the elephant. I have a copy of "The Red Badge of Courage" in my small library and I wonder if I need to recommend that Matthew reads it.. Three Days earlier: Mission Aborted enroute to Zara: It was a rough and unfruitful trip on 9 Jan 44. Fortunately the weather was too miserable for the Luftwaffe. Unfortunately our Engineer seemed unable to handle the uncertainty and stress of the mission, and spent the rest of the evening in the bar. (+1 Stress) I need to watch him once the bullets start flying in earnest.
OUTBOUND – ZONE 4: Four FW-190s took an unhealthy interest in our bomber. Three made it past the escort, but they all missed us. What did damage us was the Extreme Cold – with two of our guns freezing up. In Zone 5 SGT Wemmick successfully repaired his cheek gun, but the Radio Room gun was busted for the duration of the mission. TARGET ZONE 7: A rocket exploded beneath our starboard wing, removing some of the cowling from engine #3, yet the engine kept humming along. Flak was a bit closer, damaging the starboard wing root. Both incidents didn’t distract our Bombardier from putting 60% of our bombs in the designated target zone. Leaving Pisa, two out of three waves of bandits had a grudge against our B-17. The first wave featured a Butcher Bird which got past our Little Friends. He did superficial damage to us, but limped away as a Probable with more damage than he dealt to us. In the second wave our Ball Gunner damaged another Butcher Bird, leaving an Italian Re2005 with a bad attitude to make three passes on us. We figure he must have run out of ammunition because he had our number – wounding three, putting a hole in the fuel tank (which eventually self sealed), and scattering pieces of the radio all over that compartment. INBOUND – ZONE 6: Two ME-210s barely began their run at us when the P-38s jumped all over them. GIULIA: Safe landing. The crew behaved professionally, and the nervousness of SGT Gargery will no longer infect them as the SGT is being invalidated home.

Award/Promotion Requests: Purple Heart: S/SGT Toby Crackit, SGT John Wemmick In Hospital: Everyone is flying today AFTER ACTION REPORT (Target for Today - Joe Carter's Variant)
Yesterday: Mission Aborted enroute : Our nervous Navigator, plus the two new crewmembers, were all a bit shaky leaving the bomber after our very bumpy failed mission. The Germans were smart enough not to fly.
TODAY:
OUTBOUND – ZONE 4: Three waves, and our escort ran off three out of the four E/A. Unfortunately the remaining 109 walked hits from our nose to our tail, knocking out the Intercom system. With the aggressiveness of the Luftwaffe today I decided to remain in the safety of the formation. TARGET ZONE 5: Three more waves. Two of the three were driven off by our Little Friends, and the third 109 avoided the escort by making a vertical dive on us... and inflicting our second Walking Hit of the day. Our new engineer tumbled out of the Top Turret with a problematic groin wound. Our Navigator fortuitously came up to report that one of his cheek guns had been destroyed, saw the situation, and immediately began first aid. Without the intercom I was frustrated what to do next when I felt the bomb bay doors open and then the bombs released. I quizzed our Bombardier what happened as we flew home and he said he just toggled the bombs when he saw the Squadron Lead release. I have heard that the 8th AF is experimenting with toggliers but it just seems unnatural to me. INBOUND – ZONE 3: A 109 seemed interested in us and was quickly jumped by Little Friends. GIULIA: Safe landing.

Award/Promotion Requests: Purple Heart: 2LT Clive Pumblechook, 2LT Matthew Pocket, 2LT Jack Dawkins, SGT Henry Hubble In Hospital: Everyone is flying today AFTER ACTION REPORT (Target for Today - Joe Carter's Variant)
OUTBOUND: No enemy action against our bomber, but the Gremlins got to us, causing the Ball Turret to jam in Zone 10. Repeated attempts to free the Ball Turret Gunner failed. TARGET ZONE 12: Flak inflicted some structural damage to the port wing, but it didn't distract our Bombardier from getting half our bombs in the designated target area. As we headed back out over the sea German rockets flashed through the formation, just missing us. The German fighters we saw at a distance were repelled by the defensive firepower of the formation. INBOUND: In Zone 3, the Luftwaffe boiled out of their bases around Rome. Whether it was a missed rendezvous or preoccupation, there were few American fighters to be seen. We count ourselves lucky that only four bandits made runs at us. When the dust settled we had four wounded crewmembers. GIULIA: The splashdown in the mud was anti-climatic for everyone except SGT Drummle, trapped in his Ball Turret. I had hoped that seeing the sunshine over the French Riviera would help ease the stress that some crewmembers were feeling; but between the Mechanical failure, the tail guns being blown out of the Tail Gunner's hands, and the bad weather, some crew men are drinking to excess. At least that Eeyore Pumblechook won't be returning to the Great Expectations.

TARGET ZONE - Zone 6: Approaching the target it seemed like the Luftwaffe was fixated on the leading edge of the formation, so we watched the defensive gunnery of the 509th keep the bandits away. This allowed our Bombardier to concentrate on the breaks in the clouds and he is confident that he hit the target. INBOUND - Zone 6: Finally, the Germans realized that we were flying tail. Two out of the four bandits heading for our B-17 got past our escort. We traded minor hits with the ME-210, and that was it for the mission.

Still over Italy, in Zone 2, our #2 engine ran away on us. We were able to feather the engine and turn around. As we were over liberated Italy we did not jettison the bombs. Ten minutes after turning around a lone Bf-109 discovered us all by ourselves. On his second pass our Top Turret tagged him, and we last saw him staggering north, trailing oily smoke. Only a probable, but due to his attack the crew gets credit for the mission.

Great job by our Little Friends. Eleven out of twelve bandits that wanted a piece of our B-17 were driven off, though in two cases it was after Butcher Birds had hammered us on their initial passes.

We were surprised by the lack of action on this long, contested mission. Hidden away in the middle of the middle squadron has its benefits.

OUTBOUND Zone 10: Multiple waves slammed into our formation, with bandits in the first and third waves trying to fight their way towards our bomber. Six total Bf-109s, and three were damaged - one by the RAF and two by our gunners. In return we suffered a nasty crack in the cockpit window. TARGET Zone 11: During the Bomb run we were buffeted by flak, suffering some damage, while putting 20% of our bombs on target. While rallying three more waves of German fighters tore into the 509th. The third wave made Mission 13 our unlucky number 13. A 190 put a shell into our nose, instantly killing our Navigator. Though we've collected a lot of Purple Hearts, and have had four men invalidated home with serious wounds, LT Clark was the first fatality that the Great Expectations has suffered. When that Butcher Bird returned looking for more blood our gunners removed its right wing - for our crew's first credited aerial victory. INBOUND Zone 10: Two 110s tried to sneak up on us from below, and both the Tail Turret and Ball Turret set their on fire. Fortuitously the Ball Gunner had just unjammed one of his guns in time to flame the bandit making a vertical climb on us.

In Zone 2 outbound we had two separate waves of FW-190s try to make a run at us. Two of the three Butcher Birds were run off by our escort. In the Target Zone two Bf-109s wanted a piece of our tail. The P-38s got one and our Tail Gunner dismantled the other one. Flak peppered our Starboard Wing and we had a short-lived fuel leak that quickly seal sealed. In the midst of the Flak our bombs were off target. There were E/A swarming around the formation as we headed home but the defensive fire of the other bombers in the 509th was so effective that we didn't get a clear shot at any of those bandits. On the inbound leg the formation was disrupted by rockets exploding among the formation. There were four instances of German fighters pointing their noses towards us, and all of them were discouraged by the boys in the P-38s.

OUTBOUND: A 109 in Zone 5 was chased off before he got close. In Zone 11, two bandits tried to make a run on us and both were blown out of the sky. TARGET ZONE 12: Four E/A made passes at us in Zone 12. We traded misses and it looked like they decided to concentrate on the Low Squadron instead. We took some superficial damage to the starboard wing from Flak, and our bombs hit the eastern edge of our designated target. Two more 109s tried sneaking up behind us as we rallied, and both were damaged by our gunners. INBOUND: In Zone 10, the Luftwaffe showed up just after our rendezvous with the P-38s of the 1st FG. Two bandits were seen leaving quickly with Lightnings behind them - one was a Bf-109 with Romanian markings. Our gunners damaged a third. Three 110s then headed our way. Our Little Friends culled out two bandits, leaving the remaining 110 to knock out our #1 engine. The Kraut tried another pass and out Engineer swears that he knocked out one of the 110's engines as payback. The fighter was last seen limping to the east.
