This is your group's XO, sharing out of character for a moment.
The missions for previous campaigns introduced us to an important, but somewhat overshadowed theater of the war - Northern Africa. Now we are moving on to Italy with the 15th AF, and eventually England and the 8th.
How are the Missions and any applicable House Rules determined? Bryan, our CO, came up with an initial list that was rooted in history. Other Admins, including myself, gave feedback as shown in the attached photo.
Some significant missions flown by the 9th Air Force were flown by our group. The first two are examples, and though they required some special rules they were critical to the culture of the 9th AF. In other cases we will fly missions with one foot in history and the other foot in enjoying the games we love. For example, during the battles of El Alamein the 9th was focused on bombing the ports supplying Rommel's Afrika Korps. Well, bombing the same port repeatedly becomes tedious to most players so we'll take part in those battle flying a variety of missions. The 9th flew a number of night missions and patrols to track down enemy ships - many being unsuccessful. We'll have only a few of those sprinkled in, but not as many and ours will find those targets. (But can we hit them???) Because we love action we'll face more enemy fighters over the Med than historical as the technology to hunt down enemy bombers in 1942, and especially in Africa, was not developed. It will not be the volume of fighters encountered over 1943 Northern France but I hope we all enjoy the campaign.
With the 12th AF we elongated the timeline and participated in the Invasion of Algeria, the grueling battles to conquer Tunisia - including the Kasserine Pass where the bombing missions performed by our group helped blunt the offensive of the Afrika Korps. We also took part in history, supporting the invasions of Sicily and Italy.
Moving on to the 15th Air Force we will continue to keep one foot in history, participating in missions both glorious and unfortunate. Some targets are chosen and modified to immerse the group in the history. Die rolls choose a particular date and checking history we see that there was no mission flown that date by the 15th AF due to weather. We try to blend that into the narrative and Gazetteers.
Bryan will create the QOTS Gazetteer while I will then follow up and create a TFT Gazetteer that should line up with QOTS.
Bomber Crews, man your planes!
