No fighters encountered Airbase: No issues on take off Outbound: Only thing to report is the bomb drop mechanism failed sometime during the flight to the target. No fighters encountered. Target Area: Moderate FLAK over target. No fighters. Bombs would not drop on command. Bombardier had to drop manually. Bombs were off target. Inbound: A wave of fighters attacked aircraft. No damage sustained. Right before entering landing pattern attacked by a wave of fighters. Escorts drove off several. An FW-190 shot up #1 Engine and caused it catch fire. Pilot was able to get the engine extinguished and feathered. Airbase: Landed safely. Mission completed.

AFTER ACTION REPORT
Using TfT, Mandatory rules + optional rules 'Limburger Variant Mech Failures', Peckam 'Expanded German Fighter Skills' and Ilmarainen 'More Detailed Bomb Run Procedures'
We welcomed Sam Kozemchok as the replacement of our lost ball turret gunner McBride. Take-off without trouble but once airborne over Italy, we have a fuel transfer pump malfunction. Graves tried to manually pump the fuel but without success. Luckily we have just enough fuel to make it to Calvi. We met a couple of FW190, but they were either driven off or missed us. Before reaching Corsica, we jettisoned our bombs in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Both engines on port side shut down over Corsica, but landing on Calvi was relative smooth. Still, repairs took until 13th of March. Without much to do in the meantime, Pelka - a chef in his previous life - did search for figatelli, apparently a type of sausage on the island. He insisted on taking a lot of those with us (to share he said), that's why the cockpit smells like garlic...
Weather turned bad on the 13th and the take-off was scrubbed. On the 14th we took off successfully, even with the weather still being poor. As expected flying solo, we encountered a lot more resistance upon approaching Italy. All in all we spotted 1 JU88C-6, 3 FW190 and 4 ME109 before reaching Foggia. Both our engineer and radio operator claimed a kill on those ME109's. Most were driven off by the P-47s from the 325th. We made a safe landing on Foggia. For the non-effective sortie we weren't awarded credit and most pilots from the 79th gave us a sour look. In L'ultima Cena a crew muttered we returned with more stuff than we left with.

AFTER ACTION REPORT “The Talkin’ Texan’s” first mission, a flight across the northern Mediterranean and Corsica at 20,000’ to the submarine repair facilities in Toulon, southern France. Take off and find station as position 9 in the squadron, which is the high cell for today. NTR until just after crossing the coast near Naples in 50% cloud cover. E/a observed sniffing around, but driven off by little friends. While they are chasing them off a pair of 109s sneaks in for a 12 high and 10.30 high attack. One driven off damaged, but the 12 high gets a couple of hits in, causing superficial damage in the bomb bay and radio room. E/a circles back round for a 9 level attack, but nailed by combined fire from top turret, ball turret and left waist. Observed right wing shearing off. Chute seen.
Soon after this attack engine #1 started emitting blue smoke, the tell-tale sign of an oil leak. To avoid the risk of fire, the engine was shut down and the decision was made to abort. Bomb load was jettisoned over water and we turned around to RTB. We descended to 10,000’ and came off oxygen.
The Krauts are always looking for lone bombers, and we attracted a schwarm of four FW190s and a solitary Bf109. Our fighters managed to drive off one of the FWs, but while the 109 circled out of range, the remaining three FWs made their attack. They split up, coming in from 12 and 10.30 level and 3 low. The head-on was driven off damaged and the 10.30 level was shot out of the air by the top turret and left cheek guns, with its pilot seen to bail out. The 3 low FW was driven off damaged by the right waist and ball turret. The single 109 made a pass from 12 level, but was also driven off damaged.
We landed safely back at Foggia. Our first mission was one of mixed feelings. The engine problem meant that we didn’t get to bomb the target, but our gunners did a great job of defending “The Talkin’ Texan,” which thankfully just took light damage from the only successful attack.

AFTER ACTION REPORT (QOTS-Beery):
A Spare Crew flying a Hanger Queen
In Zone 3 outbound, one of a pair of Bf-109s got past the escort to exchange misses with our gunners.
As we began our Bomb Run, two FW-190s flashed by our bomber, also exchanging misses with our gunners. We were feeling confident; and then the Flak spanked our tail, destroying the Tail Guns and throwing off our Bombardier’s aim.
Turning back for home the formation faced multiple waves, with two having an unhealthy interest in Private Dix. Our engineer, on his first mission, somewhat redeemed the missed bombing run by knocking a 109 out of the sky. The loss of our starboard flap was insignificant to the sight of that bandit tumbling to earth.
With France in our rear view mirror, some E/A followed us out over the Ligurian Sea. Three Butcher Birds made runs at us. Two limped away damaged in exchange for the loss of a rudder panel.

After Action Report: (using TfT) (Optional rules: Crew-chief effects; Crew Stress; Jasta 6 German Pilot Quality; Peckham’s Random Event Variant Table; Axis Aircraft 1942-45).
A much shorter break this time between missions, with only one false start. When the route was revealed, it was the same as exactly one month ago: Toulon, with the target being the U-boat repair facilities. Our last trip there wasn’t too bad, so we were all hoping for the same again.
Mission: It pretty much turned out that way! We saw no opposition until over the target area, when two Ju88s approached low on our starboard side. They were easy meat for the RAF guys, however, with the Hurricanes from Calvi chasing them off and downing one of them.
The flak before and after the bomb run didn’t hit us and one of the two Me109s which engaged us on our egress was chased off. The final bogey didn’t last long as Long hit something in the nose area which blew up.
Things went quiet again until just short of Naples, when four FW190s turned up. The Jugs escorting us quickly cut that down to two. The remaining pair split up, one coming in high ahead, the other high off our tail.
Perez was dead on with his gunnery at the one ahead of us, resulting in another exploding Jerry plane, with no chance for the pilot to escape.
Ward reckoned he damaged the one behind us before it dropped from his zone of fire, but as it closed in, Hughes finished it off, taking out the starboard wing flying controls, resulting in the aircraft entering a fatal dive.
The short distance home was quiet after that, and even with the bad weather, we had no trouble putting the plane down safely.
A long old trip, with a couple of hairy moments, but overall – successful. Perez seems to finally be getting over his issues stemming from his mission to Pisa, and the extra responsibility the Group has given him deserves some credit for that. His gunnery was rewarded, as were the other two claimants today, with the board awarding an unprecedented two and half kills out of three claims.
Woody and his groundcrew also got a pleasant surprise after such a long trip: no battle damage, and just the routine after-flight checks to be done.
A decent day out, but there is always the nagging doubt about what the next mission will bring. Some of the guys are now halfway to 25, which (so I’m told) is when the worry about each mission increases. Let’s hope we can all make it through.

A Spare Crew flying a Hanger Queen
The safety of being in the middle of the middle squadron resulted in no bandits attacking Bonnie. A burst of Flak did penetrate into the center of the Combat Box, wrecking the Tail Guns and knocking out the heat for our Tail Gunner. Without guns to fire, I ordered SGT Patrick into the warmth of the Radio Room, keeping our station in the formation. The buffeting by the Flak did not distract our Bombardier's concentration, and he placed 75% of our bombs within the designated target area.
The only other thing to note is in Zone 2 Inbound, as we were already descending towards Giulia, our #1 engine quit on us. We were able to restart it at half power, but it was running rough so we shut it down and landed on the three good engines.

I've written a short story about this mission from the perspective of my crew. It's finished, but I need to know how many more ships are due back before I can close it off and share it with everyone. The narrative is up to and including Outbound to Zone 4, because that's as far as we got before having to abort! Pre-mission jitters? It’s long one to Toulon, but opposition is predicted to be fairly light. I keep my thoughts to myself. Nice, clear sunny day as we lift off from Giulia and make squadron assembly. We then turn west, and head out over the Tyrrhenian Sea. MacGyver doesn’t respond to an oxygen check. Ballard unstraps, grabs a spare O2 bottle and makes the short trip to the top turret. He finds Angus still upright, somehow, but slumped over and barely breathing. He’s in a bad way. How the hell? We’ve not been at altitude for that long. I briefly wonder if MacGyver’s oxygen worked at all. The spare bottle rouses MacGyver somewhat, but he’s in no shape to finish the mission. And… I must confess... the idea of flying on to Toulon with no top turret gunner or an experienced engineer isn’t too appealing. We radio in and turn for home. Landing: Nice smooth landing, despite our fuel and bomb load. MacGyver is loaded into an ambulance and then whisked off to base hospital. I check in with CAPT Pierce, one of the docs, later in the day and am told that MacGyver’s condition is serious. Apparently, he came close to dying. “He’s going to be grounded for some time, I can’t say how long. Maybe permanently. The good news is that he is responsive now. Create a thread, and post your story. You will note that there already exists a thread for for the E-Club, and one for the base. This is also where you can post stories that occur off-base. Then, there is L'ultima Cena, which is a local hang out for crews. Not to discourage some fictional narrative to add color to the campaign, I write some of my own, but it is best left outside the mission threads. The deadline for AARs is two-weeks after a Mission is posted, but because of real life some players may finally get theirs written up weeks later. I usually will wait to lock a thread for a month after it is posted. I'd definitely wait until your C.O. posts his summary. I'd recommend posting in the L'ultima Cena. PRE-FLIGHT
I had good news and I had bad news for the crew. The good news was that we had a little bit longer on the ground before take-off. The bad news was the reason this was because we were the "tail end charlie". I suppose someone has to do it sometime. I only wonder if we're paying someone's debt from a previous life. I shuddered at the thought but shook these negative superstitions out of my head. INGRESS
We took off without a hitch and soon took up our position at the back of our squadron's position in the combat box. For the first part over the Tyrrhenian Sea, we had Belting in his tail turret giving us a running commentary about how exotic the sunrise was today. There was a time for mirth and a time to do our duty. Although there was a little bit of action around the formation, none of it came our way. We passed over "USS Corsica" and before long, we were making the last course change before the attack. The enemy coast was ahead.
Zone 11 - Contact! Several enemy fighters took an interest in us, two 109s banked around and coming in from our six and a Bf110D coming in from our 1 o'clock. Despite 50-cal bullets hitting them in controlled bursts and others blindly flying around behind us from the Radio Room in the hope they would hit something, we did succeed in damaging two of them seriously enough that they broke off without hitting us.
TDK's recent good luck seemed to have deserted him when he missed a 109 coming in high from our six, which fired and hit, hitting our #2 engine. I was lucky enough to be able to feather it and also that we were close enough not to have to drop out of formation.
It came in for a second pass coming in level from our 12, facing TDK on Top and Nelson on the Chin. Again, TDK missed, Nelson winged it but it was enough for the enemy to miss and break off its attack, going to chance its luck on another of the group.
TARGET ZONE
With no more enemy fighters, it was time to face the flak. We were caught by one burst, which caused some light damage to the radio room and to the outboard port fueltank, which self-sealed. Although shaken a bit by the flak and not quite 100% focussed in having to face off with two enemy aircraft just a few minutes before, Nelson kept his cool and again dropped about a third of the bombs on target. A successful mission thus far.
Even another hit from flak caused superficial damage to the mid-section and bomb bay. Had it hit us there on the way in, we would be queuing up for our harps ... or pitchforks.
EGRESS
We had just cleared the flak when three fighters - two Bf109Gs & one Bf109G - came at us. Some Hurricanes from the RAF appeared and took on the heavier fighters but left us with the 109 coming in high on our six. Defensive fire hit it several times but not enough to stop it firing and hitting us before it broke off.
We barely had time to breathe before a second wave came in. A Hurricane intercepted one of them but it left us a FW190D coming in high on our six. Fortunately for us, De Klerk's luck came back and one sustained burst hit the engine and the pilot compartment. The plane spun out of control, seen to explode before anyone was seen trying to bail out.
LANDING & AFTERMATH
The rest of the mission was uneventful and although tempted to land in Corsica to get our engine fixed, sample the cuisine, bring back some supplies and get some brownie points with the brass, we safely landed at base. A successful mission, no injuries and our first gunner with five kills to his credit. We have an ace in our crew.
Penhaligon looked over the damage and said it would be ready for tomorrow if required. Good to know.

Ingress
This being our first mission, it was nice to be snugged up in the middle squadron. Take-off was smooth and ingress target was quiet.
Zone 3 We were visited by FW-190 that was driven off by our escort
Zone 11 We were attacked by 9 fighters in 3 waves; 2 Bf-109’s, 3 Bf-110’s, 3 Fw-190’s and 1 Me-210. The escorts drove 2 Bf-109’s, 1 Bf-110, and 1 Fw-190 off. S/SGT Holmes the flight engineer is created with destroying a Me-210 and our tail gunner was created with destroying a Bf-110. Gunners damaged another Bf-110 and scored hits on two FW-190’s. Unfortunately, one of the Fw-190’s scored a hit on the cockpit which destroyed the controls to the flaps. The only other damage was some superficial holes in the plane.
Target zone
The flak was minimal and we made our bomb run scoring and estimated 30% of the bombs on target. No flak or fighters to speak of as we egressed from the target and turned for home.
Egress
Zone 3 We were attacked by 2 Fw-190’s, one of which was driven off by our escort. The other made a pass scoring a superficial hit on our starboard wing and missing on his second pass.
Landing Despite the damaged controls to our flaps the landing was uneventful. Damage is minimal and we will be ready for the next mission.

Giulia Airbase: Take-off and assembly ok Zone 2-10 Outbound: We were visited by 2 Fw-190s and 1 Me-110 but all were taken over by the escort fighters. Zone 11 Outbound/Inbound (Target Zone): Attacked by a couple of Me-110 both driven off by escort. Flak cause no damage while approaching the target. When the bombs were dropped, O'Brien realized that the release mechanism was out of order. He tried and succeeded in manually unhooking, but by then the objective had passed and our load fell on farmland inland from Toulon. The mechanism was probably broken at the time of take-off. Flak in egress was ineffective. Some german rockets entered the formation but caused no damage. Zone 10-4 Inbound: Nothing to report. Zone 3 Inbound: A Fw-190 and an italian e-109 approached us but our escort was ready! Zone 1-5 O/B: All went well at the start of the mission with our squadrons' bombers keeping a flight of enemy aircraft off our tail. Target Zone 12 O/B: We encountered two Bf 109F's and a Me 210A just prior to the IP. Our little Friends drove off one Bf 109 and the Me 210. Sgt Miholland and MSgt Pasiak destroyed the lone Bf 109. Flak was Moderate and inaccurate. Weather was patchy wit 5/10 cloud cover. Dropping on command we again placed about 20% of our eggs hit the target zone. Target Zone 12 I/B: Turning back for home the flak was the same as our ingress but much lighter. Though the Luftwaffe was more intense coming off the target. Two Bf 109F's came from the starboard side. The Hurricanes dispatched one and MSgt Pasiak and Sgt Freeland destroyed the other. Zone 11-1 I/B: About fifteen minutes after this we were approached by two more Bf 109F's. Sgt Wiman blew the port wing off this one with a concentrated hit. No chute was seen as the enemy fighter spun out of control. The other 109 missed us but, as it passed under the tail Sgt Perez was able to hit the fighter hard enough that is started to burn and was pouring out heavy black smoke as it hightailed it for the nearest cloud. After these attackers it was a fairly easy ride home. Two waves of Butcherbirds attacked as we approached the Italian coast. The first wave of three FW 109D's converged on the "Stupid Dragon" from all around. One was driven off by our P-47's and one was destroyed by Pasiak and Freeland. The last one missed us and flew off for another bomber in the 485th BG. The second wave came from above trying to make multiple vertical dive attacks. One was shot down by our P-47's as it was setting up to dive on us. The other was blown out of the skies from MSgt Pasiak's expert marksmanship! Pasiak was the hot gunner today by far. ( Ed Note: On this VD attack, Pasiak rolled back to back Box Cars to hit and destroy the Butcherbird.) Pairing up on two kills and this lone kill that most likely saved our ship from destruction. The briefing room was uncharacteristically quiet. Where there was usually a buzz of conversations, there was at most the sound of whispering. This suddenly increased to a loud buzz when Lt. Leary, the ops officer came walking to the front with papers in his hand. It was obvious that his presence meant that the CO would not be doing the briefing. They hadn't really expected it. Little had been seen of him of late and the few sightings of him were at night, pacing around the field. The men had taken to calling him The Ghost.
Lt. Leary cleared his throat several times, trying to get the men's attention but the chattering continued. Finally Captain Delozier called the room to attention. When he finally put them at ease it was a few seconds longer than necessary. The men sat and the room was silent. the XO stopped back and indicated to Leary to proceed.
"Gentlemen, this was a good mission. We lost no aircraft to enemy action, we only suffered to men killed, and the loss, at sea, of Dam Yankees with one man missing. The rest of the crew was rescued. Bombing accuracy was good, too. Overall, the squadron got 35.45% of its eggs into the basket." He paused as if he was waiting for a laugh but the silence remained unbroken. "I'm sure if he was here, Major Shapiro would tell you that he was proud of that." A strained laugh broke out and was quickly cut off with a look from Delozier. "Best in the squadron was Double Bomb at 80% with Wongo II runner-up at 60%.
"Shooting accuracy remains high. Our gunners put in claims for 25 enemy aircraft and has been awarded 20 and two thirds. I'm sure if..." But he stopped himself before he went any further.
"That's all I've got for you. Any questions for me?" He paused for about a second then hurried out. The XO waited a few seconds longer, then dismissed the men.

With a creak of a door in walks the the CO Major Rudy Jopp and the XO Captain Garfield.
At the same time, Sgt Wallace bellows: “Boxcars… Attention! ” … and everyone rises.
"At ease and be seated" starts the Major. "We pounded the U-boat repair yards pretty good with 27% on target. Together with the 80th & 79th the Germans won't be menacing our convoys in the Med if they can't repair their subs" A few hoots echo the briefing room.
"We did lose the Betty Anne at sea and the US Navy is still searching for her crew. We had three aborts, the Knock Out, The Schmoo and The The Talkin' Texan due to a heat issue, an ox issue and an oil leak. I've asked the XO to have all our birds heat, ox and engines checked out before out next sortie. We are going to need them."
"Congrats to our top bombers; Betty Anne, Delayed Action and Next Objective with 40% on target. You all were credited with 12 1/2 kills. Well done." Pausing for a moment, "The Red Cross has reporting (9) of our brothers as POW (6) and deceased. Names will be posted outside the briefing room. Their next of kin have been informed."
"This still leaves (48) as MIA." Turning to his XO, Captain Garfield mimics a film camera...."Oh yes tonight at 1900 in Hanger 13 the film Meet Me in St. Louis starring Judy Garland is playing. It's a comedy I am told...but did I say Judy Garland is in it ! " Expecting a rise from the boys and getting none he closes the briefing folder and begins to walk toward the aisle.
"That's all " shouts the XO.
“Boxcars… Attention” and the assembled throng rises again.

We took off without too much difficulty, air was a bit stagnant so the stick was heavy. Navigator set vectors for the rally point, and we joined the rest of the 80th in the Low Squadron, middle of the formation.
There were no fighters for the first 500 miles of the mission. As soon as we were about halfway from Italy to Corsica enemy fighters were all over us. We encountered 5 FW-190s in the first wave one of which was shot down by our Ball Gunner. Then 2 Bf-109s attacked. None of these fighters did any damage aside form a few minor holes. Over the Corsican coast, again we were attacked by 3 FW-190s. One scored hits on the Starboard wing and ignited a fuel tank fire which was extinguished.
Feet wet from the Corsican coast to France there were multiple fighter attacks causing various damage throughout “The Girl” until we encountered flak near the target. We took no flak inbound to the target and were able to bomb with the rest of the group. Bombardier Healey indicated it appeared most of the Squadrons bombs were in close proximity to the target. We took minor flak hits on egress from the target area and then immediately encountered enemy fighters. They did some damage including the wounding of our Starbrd Waist Gunner.
We encountered heavy enemy fighter activity again over Corsica causing a lot of damage including another fuel tank fire that was also extinguished. It was here that about 300 miles out, we were attacked by a group of fighters. It was here that our Navigator, @nd Lt. Andrews scored two confirmed kills to keep “The Girl” safe for the remainder of the flight.
We had a hard landing due to all the control surface damage but were able to get her down, hopefully without anything major beyond the combat damage. My Crew Chief reported it is going to take a lot of work to get her ready by the next mission but his initial assessment, and some further inspection, indicated he should be able to complete repairs in time for the next mission, provided the tailplane damage is not too severe. I will submit TSgt. Ignatowski and Sgt McDonald for a Purple Heart. I have made a request of personnel to assign 2nd Lt. Healey as my Bombardier. If that request does not go through, I will advise as to our replacement.
