After Action Report: (Flown using TFT)
Takeoff and assembly was uneventful, with things starting to heat up as we headed out over the Tyrrhenian Sea (Zone 3) when, though there were many EA in the sky, they seemed to attack in dribbles. First in was a lone Me 110 that got chased off by a pair of Jugs from the 325th. With our escort pulled away, an Me 109 gave it a go, exchanging ineffective fire with us. After that, the third wave sought out targets elsewhere, one of them being Gremlin’s Delight who aborted. Apparently Jerry did more damage as shortly afterward (Zone 4) Bonkers fell out of formation, Bit O’ Lace taking over as Tail-End-Charlie.
Things then quieted down till we drew near the French coast (Zone 10) when two waves of EA attacked. The first wave focused its attention elsewhere, but a trio of Me 109s form the second wave made for us. The RAF downed one and we flamed another while damaging the third.
The sky over Toulon (Zone 11) was teeming with Jerry aircraft. The Hurricanes drove off a pair of 109s from the first wave, as well as one from the second wave, with us downing the other. I guess that was enough to discourage the third wave. Flak was light and inaccurate, though the crew reported Fire Belle going down. Nine chutes were observed. 2 LT Martell put 30% on target.
Flak coming of the target was much lighter, as was the effort by the Luftwaffe. We faced a pair of FWs, with one falling to the RAF and us damaging the other.
Back over the Ligurian Sea (Zone 10) we had the unusual experience of being bombed, though none hit us. That was followed up by a pair of 190s. Again, the Hurricanes harried one and we downed the other. Others didn’t fair as well, Black Maria falling out of formation.
I’m not sure when it happened, but somewhere over the Tyrrhenian Sea we both Betty Anne and T-Tailed Bathtub fell out of formation.
As we approached Italy (Zone 3) no one bothered us, but Flat Foot Floogie II got hit by enemy fighters. Only 2 chutes were seen. We avoided any further entanglements and landed safely at Giulia. TSgt Mason was very pleased that we didn’t put any dings in ‘his airplane.’

The only "damage' suffered by Bonnie was the mechanical failure of the #4 Turbo Supercharger outbound in Zone 8. So far away from home, the option to go it alone seemed unwise, so we jettisoned our bombs into the Ligurian Sea, and kept our station in the formation.

Still over Italy, in Zone 2, our #2 engine ran away on us. We were able to feather the engine and turn around. As we were over liberated Italy we did not jettison the bombs. Ten minutes after turning around a lone Bf-109 discovered us all by ourselves. On his second pass our Top Turret tagged him, and we last saw him staggering north, trailing oily smoke. Only a probable, but due to his attack the crew gets credit for the mission.

Mission Description: Filed by 1st Lt. J Van Dorn, pilot commanding
With a few more days together the crew of the Holy Toledo are starting to mold into a unit. They have even started talking about organizing a baseball team in the 79th.
We took off without incident and settled into the middle of the formation. The outbound flight was quiet until we arrived on the French coast.
Four 190s attacked us from behind. They shot up the tail, hit the radio, and Reynolds. On their second pass one of them shot up the starboard wing. Reuss looked over and saw that saw that fuel was pouring out of the inboard tank. We were lucky it did not ignite. We were not so lucky that the tank drained so fast.
I called down to Baker: “Navigator, plot us a course to Calvi, we are not getting home on what is in the tanks”
We took minor flak damage during the bomb run that was just enough to throw Wetherell off target and we turned for home.
A single 190 tried to chase us out of France. Kershner shot him down.
As the group approached Corsica we dropped out of formation and headed for Calvi. With the radio out we were really gambling that the RAF new what a B-17 looked like and did not shoot us down. As we approached the field, I shot the emergency flares and could feel the British AA guns training on us. They must have trained them well because we landed without incident. It is a fighter runway so we barely had enough space.
Ruess and I shut down the engines and a jeep with a pair of RAF officers approached. I climbed out of the plane and saluted the two of them.
“Good afternoon, old boy. I see you are having a bit of trouble.” “Yes sir, if we could have some service, fill ‘er up, and patch up Sgt. Reynolds, it would be mighty appreciated.”
With the help of the RAF crew, they found that the starboard inboard tank was too shot up to repair, but there were able to isolate it from the rest of the fuel system and get enough fuel in the tanks to get us back to base. Reynolds was bandaged up and ready to go. Several pots of tea later they helped get us turned around and back on are way back to Italy.
We arrived back at base safely. I have arranged for them to be sent a case of bourbon to put in that tea.

On his second attack, however, he was shot down. Medium flak over the target cause superficial damage but some shrapnels in waist compartment caused our left waist gunner death for a mortal shot to the head. Explosions caused by German bombs dropped from above shook the ship but caused no damage. Attacked by an italian Re-2005, driven off by spitfires, and a Fw-190 that even if damaged hit us caused some holes and a shot to left wing root; on its return it was shut down by our gunners. OUTBOUND Took off and joined the formation without incident. Shortly after the formation heads for the coast out escorts ran off a Me109. But they missed a Fw190 that made a head on attack. S/SGT Harshaney & SGT Thompson apparently took out the engine as it lost spend and dropped out of sight. Other than BONKERS squadron lead dropping out early in the mission and replaced by Bit o' Lace it was a quite flight to the target area
TARGET AREA Once we were in the target area enemy activity picked up. Our escorts intercepted a Fw190 and a Me109. An Me109 in a vertical dive hit the left wing but no significant damage. When it tried a reattack SGT Trotter did enough damage that it missed and broke off the attack. That was followed by 3 Me1110’s trying their luck. Our escorts stopped one, SGT Trotter shot one at our six out of the sky, no chute observed. The third tried a vertical clime attack and traded shots with SGT Trotter who damaged it and in turn the Me110 hit the left-wing fuel tank which self-sealed and hit the radio compartment knocking S/SGT Harshaney out. When the Me110 tried a reattack at 12 SGT Trotter and SGT Thompson knocked it out of the sky with no chute observed. After giving S/SGT Harshaney first aid, SGT Kimberlin moved to the top turret. The flak on our bomb run did damage us but we saw the FIRE BELLE hit by flak and our best count was 9 chutes observed. 2LT Marcum was On target and assessed as 40% effective. The flak after the bomb run dropped off by about one third. After the squadron reformed at the RP three Me109s attacked with our escorts intercepting two of them. SGTs Kimberlin and Thompson did enough damage to it that it missed and broke off the attack.
INBOUND As we started back to base another trio of Me109s attacked us. This time the escorts stopped one of them, and SGT Kimberlin, now manning the top turret, turned one t our 9 into a fire ball. SGT Thompson engaged the one at our 12 and while he missed it was enough to make the Me109 miss. Once away from the French coast it was quite until we were approaching the Italian coast. A Me109 came in at our 12 while a Re2005 attacked from our 3. SGT Thompson took the left wing off the Me109 and a chute was observed as it went down. T/SGT Whitehead and SGT Kimberlin damaged the Re2005 enough to make it miss are break off the attack.
We made a safe landing at Giulia Airfield. We found out that S/SGT Harshaney has a cracked skull and will take 3 weeks before he will be ready to fly.

INGRESS
Zone 11 - Again, we had an uneventful journey until we were approaching the target. A single FW190 came in from our 10, we fired, Nose Gun caught it, it returned fire, missed and broke off.
BOMBING RUN
We were hit in the nose by flak. The damage was superficial, but it may have put off DLZ. From his estimation, all of our bombs had landed short, exploding harmlessly in the water of the harbor.
EGRESS
It was mayhem as we were leaving the TZ. Fighters were nipping in and out of the box, guns blazing wildly from within. I cannot be certain but I’m sure we were hit in the port wing when no enemy fighters were around.
Four Bf109s coming in from our rear took an interest in us. Fortunately for us, they were reduced to three. Defensive fire managed to damage one of them that it broke off. Otherwise, it was ineffective. We can only hope our fire did not hit one of our fellow bombers. The EA caused some superficial damage, but took out the tailwheel, damaged the rudder and caused a glancing hit on the port wing flap. On their second pass, the Ball Turret seriously damaged one that it broke off its attack and Tail took down the other.
Zone 3 – Again, enemy fighters were buzzing in and out and gunners were wildly spraying, trying to catch something. They caught us instead, mostly superficial but our control cables were damaged.
Zone 2 – Again, it was our turn to face the foe that came in the form of three FW190s. Only one of them hit us, damaging the port aileron but had been so heavy damaged by our defensive fire that it broke off the attack. Another of his colleagues was also a possible kill having quickly broken off. The other just fired, missed, and generally bugged out.

80th BOMB SQUADRON Mission #8, TOULON, FRANCE - HARBOR AAR
The men were pleased to see Major Shapiro downright beaming. It was rare, but not unknown, to see a smile on his face. But it was the gleam in his eyes that they found surprising. "Gentlemen, let me say, that I'm extremely pleased about the results of this mission. All around, it was an excellent job by all hands. For the first time, we have two bombardiers who have earned DFCs for the accuracy of their drops. Now, let me say, I have no doubt that every time the bombs go on target it's a team effort. But that magic eye in the bombsight deserves special recognition.
"Overall, the squadron attained an accuracy of 43.3% among aircraft that delivered their weapons. If we add in the one aircraft that was unable to bomb it drops to 39.75% but that's still a great job. The most accurate drop was by 98% by Lt. Will Bennings of Bugs with second best being 95% Lt. Thompson of Double Bomb. Outstanding work, gentlemen." There was a whooping and applause from the men with the two lieutenants standing up to take bows.
"The squadron claimed 17 kills and was awarded 9 and a third. That's some good shooting, gentlemen!
"The best news is that every aircraft that launched recovered. We lost no one killed in action and the wounds that were suffered were, thankfully, light." He paused to look around the assembly with a smile on his face. "I know we're not flying tomorrow so you boys can feel free to bend one on without worrying about a sudden change. In fact, the first round is on me!" There was a roar from the men. "Have fun. Be safe." A pause. "DISMISSED!"
