B-17F: Dam Yankees Pilot: 1Lt. B. Pease Assignment: 15th Air Force, 509th Bomber Group, 80th Squadron Mission Date: 7-February-1944 Mission No.: 7 Mission this Bomber:7 Target for Today: Pontassive, Italy- Marshalling Yards Squadron Position: Low Result: On-Target 40% A pretty easy mission if you discount the rookie Waist Gunner Sgt. Dunlap. About half way to the target zone he began vomiting and basically was useless for the balance of the sortie. I think it was nerves and a full stomach. The boy will need to pace himself.
Speaking of rookies, Sgt. Lesjack on his first mission manning the Ball Turret was awarded 1/2 a credit on a ME-110. He had to share the other half with Tail Gunner Sgt. Fancher.
Flak was nil and bombs even in a disrupted formation were dropped with good effect.
Landed back at base. Sgt. Dunlap was feeling better once we landed.
That is all....

1st Lt Horst, 78th BS Pilot MISSION #5 (Groups 7) Date: February 7th, 1944 Target: Pontassive, Italy, Marshaling Yards Plane: B-24D-210 "Stupid Dragon" Position: High Cell / (#16) Altitude: 20,000feet 12x 500lbs AN-M64 Fragmentation Bombs Mission Report C04M07 -210
Zone 1-5 O/B: We met the new crew at our hardstand this morning. One guy we have seen around the base, a T/Sgt Salinas with Lt Desantis crew, and two new rookies. We were glade to have a Engineer with some experience. Our Take of and rendezvous with the squadron went off without incident. Cloud cover and just plane shitty weather seemed to keep the Luftwaffe grounded. Just prior to the IP our new guy on the left waist started calling out bandits on our nine o'clock. But this turned out to just be a new ship, Lt Llyod's plane, " T-TAILED BATHTUB", shadow in a cloud. Flak was light and very inaccurate today. Target Zone 6 O/B: Even with no flak our new guy on the Norton Sight had first mission jitters and was late dropping our load. With that said he did manage to get a couple eggs on the target. Disturbingly, one of our ships, Lt Harlow's crew in the "“ Kicking Horse”" went down in flames. Our crew witnessed nine chutes open. Target Zone 6 I/B: Flak and the Luftwaffe was basically none existent coming off the bomb run. just one flak shell come in our direction but was wide and out side the squadron cell. Captain Garfield's crew were on their game today. A swarm of Bf 109's came lazily in and his crew sent them all out of the battle. One squarely hit by their top guns fell out of the sky burning. Sgt. Salinas reported seeing this bandits right wing fold at around fifteen thousand feet. Lt Wilkins Tail and Ball gunners shredded a Bf 110C as it tried to lined up its shot. As the Zerstörer game apart under the "Black Maria's" fire Sgt. Perez saw two German chutes. Zone 5-1 I/B: As we reached the coast on egress we were attacked by two Rotte's lined up on the " Stupid Dragon." One FW 190A was driven off by a pair of Lightnings. The other three made attacks on our bomber. Two butcherbirds had highly decorated rudders. The one also had a device on the tail that looked like a laurel with a number 100 in the middle. The German was an expert (Peckhan's variant) at flying, pressing his attack from the front, getting so close that we could see this laurel up close. We just avoided being hit and this seemed to shake up the German as he broke-off his attack and went on for other pray. The other FW 190 with the decorated tail hit us in four places. One hit took out the waist oxygen system and another hit nicked the starboard aileron. On this Ace's second attack he missed us and moved on to his next target. This was the last of the German resistance, with he rest of the trip being uneventful. Weather was still crappy at base, though we were able to land without incident. 1st Lt. Moeses Horst

Spooner and I exchange looks. Seriously? Like it hasn’t been a problem so far? Guess it’s going to be more than the usual crap weather. Our take off and assembly are challenging, but uneventful. OutboundZones 2-5: Nothing to report. Target Zone (6)We’re left unmolested on our run in to the target. The flak is well clear of Floogie II as well. We do see a D-model Liberator leave the formation with flames streaming back from it and start its death dive. Looks like most of the crew got out. That’s some consolation. Anderson gets a mediocre bombing result, at best. We pull off our bombing run and make the turn for home with the flak very sporadic and inaccurate. An ME-109 and an RE.2005 are waiting for us as we leave the flak. The 109 is engaged by one of the 82nd FG boys. The 2005, coming in from 12:00 high, falls to the fire from Dummer and Marshall. InboundZone 5: Nothing to report. Zone 4: Another mixed pair of fighters… a 109 and another RE.2005 are chased off. Things heat up for us when a trio of 109s eludes our escort, coming in from 1:30 high, 12:00 high and 10:30 level. We hit one on his first pass and drive him away. One of the remaining pair hits us, but it’s nothing serious. On the Jerries’ second pass, one falls to our guns, the other takes out our nose turret and slightly wounds Dummer. The Kraut then decides to call it quits for today and departs. Zones 3-2: Nothing to report. Landing: The weather has not improved in our absence. We bring Floogie II down through the murk and rain and make an uneventful landing. We board a 6x6 and head for the debrief, with Dummer getting dropped off at the hospital. He receives a couple of stitches and will be back with us in no time. 1LT Adam MacIntosh, Command Pilot B-24J Flat Foot Floogie II 78th BS, 509th BG (H), 15th AF

AAR: MISS GRIZZ took off in poor weather, climbed to assigned LOW formation altitude and with the rest of the 80th squadron, and headed to our target. Two encounters with E/A, both as we limped home, both fortunately chased off by our fighter escort. On approach to target, we were hit by flak, a shell which burst in the waist compartment. Both waist gunners, Sergeants Kimball and Martinez and ball turret gunner Sgt. O'Farrell were killed. Lt. Sherman dropped bombs immediately and we left formation. Turned for home, descended to low altitude and slowly made it back to base without cracking in half. Landed Safely. Waist section a bloody mess. Ambulance crew took our dead away. Our maintenance chief said MISS GRIZZ will be declared "Category E" on orders from Group Maintenance Officer, and will be used for spare parts.

INGRESS
We took off and formed up without incident. We were back in the comparatively comfortable position being in the middle of the middle squadron. We knew, though, that enemy aircraft frequently cut into the middle of the combat stack and we must have our wits about us.
Our outward journey was quite uneventful. There was a flurry of action not long after we'd crossed over the Adriatic Coast but nothing came near us. It was only when we were approaching the target zone that we were to engage the enemy.
ZONE 6 - A solitary FW190 managed to cut through our fighter escort, coming in low from our six. Defensive fire was ineffective, but it succeeded in knocking out the Ball Turret and the heating in the Radio Compartment. Coming around for a second pass, it came in level from our three. This time, Top Turret took him out.

The fighters disengaged and then the flak began. DLZ took control for his bombing run and before we knew it, we got the words "bombs gone" over the intercom. He estimated just under a third of them had landed in the marshalling yard. I took back control and banked around onto the new vector. Flak was as ineffective on the way out as it was on the way in. We just had to ready ourselves for any fighters.
EGRESS
If there were any fighters waiting for us, a "little friend" had taken care of them.
Our return journey was also uneventful. If there was any further action, we did not see it. Before we knew it, we were on our final approach and landed safely. Chief Jenssen said it would be easy work and he'd have her ready for duty well before first light.
The first round was on Ricky Ruiz for betting on himself to be the first to get the third kill. Those beers were appreciated by all.

78TH BOMB SQUADRON
AFTER-ACTION REPORT
MISSION 7 - Pontassive, Italy
With a creak of a door in walks the the CO Major Rudy Jopp and Captain Garfield.
At the same time, Sgt Wallace bellows: “Boxcars… Attention! ” … and everyone rises.
Jopp heads for the podium while Garfield scans the room. "Gentlemen, another decent showing with 36% dropped on target. We lost the Kicking Horse....nine chutes were spotted. The Red Cross is inquiring on the status of Lt. Harlow and his crew along with all other MIA's."
Turning his head towards Capt Garfield and Sgt Wallace Jopp continues: "Due to a paperwork foul up, the StrikeForce dropped 99% on the airdrome at Ferrara. Our initial assessment incorrectly recorded this. Congrats to the Lt Seefeldt and the crew of the StrikeForce. This is very impressive. On today's sortie to Pontassive, T-Tailed Bathtub piloted by Lt. Lloyd led the 78th with 60% on target"
"Seven German fighters were downed today by the 78th !. Keep up the good work as the enemy will not let up. "
"That's all boys"
The Major closes his briefing folder and begins to walk toward the aisle.
“Boxcars… Attention” and the assembled throng rises again.
"Dismissed!"

80th BOMB SQUADRON Mission #7, PONTASSIVE, ITALY - MARSHALING YARD AAR
Major Shapiro had what the men had come to recognize as a neutral expression on his face. The major didn't say a lot but his face, especially his eyes, spoke volumes. Most of the men who had been around since he took command of the squadron had come to recognize what those nonverbal clues conveyed.
"Gentlemen, the good news is that we didn't lose any aircraft despite4 being low squadron in the group. The bad news is that we lost a number of our comrades and the bombing was, shall we say, hit or miss.
"Regarding our losses, we lost four men killed in action, three of whom were aboard Miss Grizz. The other was on Pride of the Wolverines. We also lost the pilot team on Wongo to serious wounds and Lieutenant Black will be receiving a DFC and Sergeant Haskell an Air Medal for bringing the ship home. Well, done gentlemen!" There was a round of applause.
"Now. As far as bombing accuracy goes, the squadron averaged 20.45% in the box. Based on the weather observations, I'd rate the performance acceptable. But when we dig down a bit, Bugs and Great Expectations were best at 50% with The Cat's Meow and Dam Yankees next best at 40%. Five aircraft were entirely off target. In addition are had two aborts.
"Okay, gents. Enough said. We're coming up on the eighth mission and you've already showed you know what it's about. Keep concentrating and keep alert at all times when you're in the airplane. The enemy can do enough damage. Let's not damage ourselves through inattention and lack of concentration." He looked around, catching the eyes of as many men as he could. "Dismissed!"
