Claims: Claimed / Awarded / ProbableNone Awards: None Promotions: None AFTER ACTION REPORTWe are brand new to the Theater. The crew, not the plane. We had shuttled over a shiny new B-17G, to Italy. The engines weren’t even cool yet when we were assigned an older B-17F. She is in near 100% working order but looking her age. Peeling and chipped paint. Countless patches. The coat of olive drab faded and stained everywhere. The old girl had certainly been through her paces. The fact that she was still here, and flying, we took as a good omen that she would see us through until the end. That hope was almost dashed as we were taking off on our first combat hop. We had no sooner had wheels up when #3 engine began to sputter and emit dark buffs of exhaust. As soon as it began it subsided. #3 resumed operating in acceptable parameters and did so for the remainder of the flight. As soon as we reached altitude Wimpy began leaving contrails, which did not dissipate until we were over Yugoslavia. With the Yugoslavia coast behind us an FW190 made a diving attack on us. Accompanying the FW-190 was a Macchi C.205 making a head on attack from 12 high. The escorting “Jugs” drove off the Italian fighter but could do nothing about the German. Sgt Nielson, from the radio room, and T/Sgt Fields, in the top turret, opened fire on the diving Focke-Wulf. T/Sgt Field’s fire left the fighter’s engine smoking, and Sgt Nielson’s fire peppered the fighter’s left wing. The enemy pilot almost caused more damage with the body of his plane than his cannon rounds. His rounds missed widely, but the smoking engine obscured his vision, and he narrowly missed striking Wimpy amidships. The Focke-Wulf continued its dive to make its escape. Control of Wimpy was passed on to bombardier 2Lt Ford. As he was taking us in, T/4th Griffin, in the tail, observed a straggling Flying Fort a few miles back. Little was noted, until Griffin reported the straggling bomber altered course to skirt the target yet maintain a parallel course with the Group. Flak on ingress to the target was light, as predicted, and quite inaccurate. Lt Ford dropped a respectable 30% on target and passed control back to me. No flak or enemy aircraft were encountered on the return leg to Foggia. Many enemy fighters were seen pestering the squadron, but none approached Wimpy. Awards: None Promotions: None AFTER ACTION REPORTThe coastal Yugoslavian islands were passing below as a pair of Bf-110s tried to attack Bottoms Up. The first was driven off by the escorts. The second was peppered across the nose and fuselage by Sgt Huang, in the ball turret, shooting the enemy fighter down. Three chutes were spotted. The target was in sight when a pair of Fw-190s took their turns attacking Bottoms Up. The first was driven off, while the second made a diving attack. T/Sgt Patterson, in the top turret, took a shot at the diving Focke-Wulf, without success. The FW also missed and continued its dive away from the bomber. Flak was light, and inaccurate, allowing 2Lt Parra a relatively uninterrupted run into the target. Photo analysis gave him about 40% on target. The immediate area around Bottoms Up remained quiet as we made our way back to Foggia. With the Italian coast in view another pair of FWs tried to make passes against us. Once again escorts were able to drive off one of the enemy fighters. The second Focke-Wulf made a diving attack. Defensive fire missed. The enemy fighter scratched some paint. The diving fighter was so focused on his firing, he nearly clipped us as he dove past. The 190 came back around from 9 Low. Sgt Huang tore up the fighter’s left wing, shredding its control surfaces. The FW missed and departed. All was quiet as we recrossed the Italian coast. Landing was clean. Submitted by, 1Lt Romeo Clayton, Pilot B-24D Bottoms Up 78th BS, 509th BG (H), 15th AF, USAAF

AFTER ACTION REPORT (QOTS - B-24 Variant):
A Spare Crew flying a Hanger Queen
OUTBOUND: Nothing to Report.
TARGET ZONE 4: It seemed that the Germans didn’t know we were coming after their airbase until we neared the I.P. Five FW-190s came boiling up through the clouds, heading right for us. Our Little Friends intercepted one, leaving the other four to make a pass at us. Two hit us for a smattering of cosmetic damage. When they tried to return our Top Turret tagged one which limped away into the clouds, which his partner hit us for some more inconsequential damage.
Our Bombardier got a good look through the clouds and put half our eggs in the basket.
Leaving the target we faced three more Butcher Birds. Our Ball Turret Gunner turned one into a fireball.
INBOUND: Nothing to Report.
Back on the ground our Ball Gunner learned that half a dozen gunners claimed the same German fighter. After interrogation and debriefing he learned that his claim was denied. This has caused grumbling in the Spare Pool, that the stories of "regular" gunners are being favored over the claims of the Spares.

Horst position after his aircraft, " Stupid Dragon" (B-24D-145-CO 42-41210), developed engine trouble immediate after take off. Assembly went well after this incident and we settled in for our first attack on the enemy." "...we saw Lt DeSantis in " Maggie" off our starboard wing in position #10. For the entire trip outbound they avoided any attention from the enemy fighters. As we entered the flak field we kind of lost track of the other bombers due to light flak. This was nerve racking to say the least, enough so that I hate to see what heaver flak is." Capt Paul Garfield's Crew, ( crushedhat ) "...from the IP to the drop point the Luftwaffe backed off as the Flak opened up. This seemed to knock the concentration off of a few aircraft. We noticed " Monotonous Maggie" get bumped by flak prior to bomb release that looked to send her eggs wide of the target zone. She was luck to get 10% anywhere near the target zone." 1LT Floyd Speer's Crew, ( rhreiss ) "...DAMN, when we came off the target Jerry was waiting for us. Even though we were untouched, these three Messerschmitt's targeted Lt DeSantis crew in " Monotonous Maggie." One of the Bf 109F made a low frontal attack that looked to do no damage. " Monotonous Maggie" did no damage to the Jerry's plane. The second Bf 109F dropped straight down on the bomber going like a bat out of Hell. Both fighter and bomber gunners missed each other. The last attacking Bf 109F came in from three o'clock low. He must have been green as the grass cause he came in flat, like he was trying to aim. Giving the " Monotonous Maggie's" gunners a clean shot, hitting the Jerry's port wing and engine. This is when ALL HELL Broke Loose. That Damned Jerry flew straight into the tail of the " Maggie." Our crew watched with horror as the two half's violently tumbled out of control." "...That stinking Jerry couldn't fly for shit, he pulled out of his attack too late... ramming DeSantis's ships tail... that damned plane just flipped over and over it two sections." AAR: MISS GRIZZ took off, climbed to assigned altitude and joined with the other bombers of the 80th in the low formation. We were not attacked by any enemy A/C until on approach to target. Three Me109's were spotted, lining up on us. Two were quickly chased off by our escort fighters, and the one that made it through the escort fighters was hit by our defensive fire. He missed his shot and was last seen diving away trailing something and one of our fighters chasing after him. There was some flak, but none hit us. Lt. Sherman dropped our bombs ( camera shows he released too soon; only about 6% on designated target ). We made turn for home and were attacked by several Fw190's. One chased off by fighter escort, the second on hit us with his gunfire, but apparently did no serious damages to us. That E/A was also last seen diving away with one of our escort fighters on his tail. There were no further contacts with E/A. We landed safely. I am told that MISS GRIZZ will be patched up and have her routine maintenance performed in time for next mission.

OutboundAfter mission briefing, we head back to get ready and then off to the A/C. First mission so there was a little unease to getting settled in. We made good takeoff and all systems functioned well. Once rendezvoused with the rest of the squadron, we headed out over the Adriatic Sea. No events while the initial leg and did take note of P-47s off to our starboard side. They would be very useful once we approached the Yogoslav coast. Once near we could see small shapes lifting up from the ground near where our target would be. No doubt this was the Germans and their Axis friends looking to meet us. At the coast line, our top turrent gunner T/SGT King came on the intercom with “Bandit 1:30 High”. LT Sanders, my co-pilot could make out a ME-110 bearing down on us. King looked to swing his guns into action as SGT Smith, our starboard waist gunner, acknowledged he spotted it too. But just as quickly we saw the ME-110 port engine explode from fire by one of our P-47’s diving on the ME-110. Good shooting for one of out little friends. We continued on to the target airfield at Moster, more fighters started to appear with one lining up for a 12:00 level approach. But just as he did 2 P-47’s jumped him and they were off for a fight. We were now lined up for our target run. Light flak hit around us but no damage was taken. I spoke to 2nd LT Gonzalas to watch for the lead bomber and drop on its cue. All bombs were away and we started our turn for home. Flak calmed down after we all dropped our bombs and although we saw enemy fighters, but none approached us as we left the target. InboundOver the coast, we saw more P-47’s loitering around looking for more targets, some engaging some circling back up for a good position. Tail gunner reported seeing white streaks behind us, thought they were contrails but did see small explosions, possible A-t-A rockets, but nothing affected us. Weather clouded up to 100%, we had to land by instruments until we got under the cloud cover. Landing was good and all safely back to base. 1st Lt Paul Flores, Pilot, 80th BS, 509th BG, 15th AF

After Action Report (using QOTS):
Outbound
This is our first mission and the crew is both excited and nervous for what lies ahead. We take off in good weather with no issues and form up. Over the Adriatic we test fire our guns and all is good. Suddenly while in Zone 2 our tail gunner spots a Bf-109 at 6:00 High. He tells the crew and we get ready but our friendlies drive him off before we even get to shoot.
As we entered Zone 3 over the Adriatic, we had no contact at all.
Zone 4 the target zone over Mostar, Yugoslavia we encountered a mix of fighters as we had two Fw-190’s, one at 12:00 High and one at 12:00 Low. Then we had a Bf-109 at 1:30 Level and a Bf-110 at 6:00 Low. The fighter cover was able to drive off the Bf-110 at 6:00 Low and the Fw-190 at 12:00 Low. That left us with the 12:00 High Fw-190 and the Bf-109 at 1:30 Level. The Engineer T/Sgt Krieger in the top turret fires at the Fw-190 at 12:00 High and misses. Bombardier 2nd Lt Doyle on the nose gun fires at the Fw-190 at 12:00 High and misses also. Navigator 2nd Lt Carpenter on the cheek guns fires at the Bf-109 at 1:30 Level and destroys him for our plane’s first kill. The remaining plane Fw-190 fires and misses and then breaks off.
Flak over the target is light and we suffer 3 shell hits, all on the starboard wing. One to the wing root, our aileron is inoperable, and the last is superficial damage. We line up to drop our bombs and I hand over the controls to Bombardier 2nd Lt Doyle who then releases bombs over the target and we hit with 30% and confirm with secondary explosions.
INBOUND
We turned for home without any flak. We get jumped by 2 Bf-109’s, one at 10:30 Level and the other at 12:00 Level and then a Bf-110 at 10:30 Low. Fighter cover drives off both of the Bf-109’s. Sgt Burnham in the ball turret fires at the Bf-110 and misses. 2nd Lt Carpenter on the port cheek gun fires and misses. The Bf-110 returns fire and gets 2 shell hits, one on the starboard wing that hit the wing flap with no effect and the other that hit the port wing but had superficial damage. The Bf-110 comes back for a second attack this time at 12:00 High. Flight Engineer T/Sgt Krieger fires from top turret and misses. Bombardier 2nd Lt Doyle on the nose gun fires and misses. The Bf-110 returns fire and misses and then breaks off.
Zone 3 over Adriatic we do not encounter anyone.
Zone 2 over Adriatic we encounter 2 Fw-190’s, one at 12:00 High and the other at 12:00 Low. Also, a Bf-109 at 1:30 Level followed by a Bf-110 at 6:00 Low. The fighter cover drives off the Fw-190 at 12:00 Low. The Flight Engineer T/Sgt Krieger fires at the Fw-190 at 12:00 High and misses and Bombardier 2nd Lt Doyle on nose gun also fires at Fw-190 and misses. Navigator 2nd Lt Carpenter on the starboard cheek gun fires at the Bf-109 at 1:30 Level and misses. Sgt Burnham in the ball turret fires at the Bf-110 at 6:00 Low and hits him sending him to a fiery death below, the plane’s second kill of the day. The Fw-190 at 12:00 High fires and misses and then breaks off. The Bf-109 at 1:30 Level fires and hits us with 1 shell hit but it is superficial damage. The second attack by the Bf-109 comes at 6:00 Level. Sgt Jacobs on the tail guns fires and hits the fighter for damage. The Bf-109 returns fire and hits with 4 shell hits, two of which are superficial damage, and then two in the tail. The tail guns are now inoperable and there was a hit to the tail oxygen supply but luckily no fire.
We get to the base and the weather is poor but our plane touches down safely.

AFTER ACTION REPORT
Our first mission - and the crew had a mix of excitement and worry.
Take off: OK no problems. We see one B-24 pull out of the group with an engine fire and return to base. Zone 1: The crew run checks over their guns and equipment. all seems to be in working order. No enemy sighted. Zone 2: All OK Zone 3: We saw some enemy fighters on the edge of the formation but none appeared to trouble us. suddenly, a rocket came out of nowhere and exploded near the radio room. suddenly all communication within the aircraft ceased. Shrapnel had destroyed the intercom. Although this would allow us to abort the mission Captain Hill decided to press on. Zone 4: Target Outbound: We were hit by two waves of fighters on the run into the target. At first 2 FW190's came at us - one was driven off by the fighter escort. the other barreled in at us at 12high. With the intercom out trying to target the fighter was near impossible and our defensive fire was ineffective. He came round again and attacked and we suffered some superficial hits before he rolled away out of ammo. The second wave consisted of 3 Me-109's, coming in at 12 High, 1.30 low and one vertical diving in. the one at 1/30 low was shot down by a fighter. Our T/SGT Edwards in the radio room missed the fighter diving in at us - he scored superfical hits on our hull in return - and 2LT Osbourne in the nose gun drove off the one coming in at 12 High. The fighter who dived in at us came around again at 9 high and caused more superficial hits on us, before diving away. As the fighter attack finished, we started seeing flak burst up ahead. A lot of bursts came close but one exploded right next to the top turret seriously injuring T/SGT Havens, and severing his foot. His war is over Over the target and without the intercom working, the bombardier tried to target the bombs as best he could but all the bombs missed.
Zone 4: Target Inbound: One the way out of the target, the flak fortunately missed us. but we were attacked again by two bf-109 fighters, one of whom was driven off by the fighter escort. The remaining one came in at 12 high and scored a superficial hit, then rolled around and attacked us from 1.30 low. several rounds hit the tail and knocked out the tail guns.
Zone3: NSTR - The 2LT Osbourne tried his best to keep T/SGT Havens concious. Zone 2: NSTR Landing - Safe landing
A pretty poor first mission for us - one seriously injured crewman, bombs missing the target and some damage that needs fixing. I should probably have aborted the mission and returned to base, but didn't want to let the group down.

B-24D: BONKERS Pilot: 1Lt. J Sweeney Assignment: 15th Air Force, 509th Bomber Group, 78th Squadron Mission Date: 7-Jan-1944 Mission No.: 1 Mission this Bomber: 1 Target for Today: Mostar, Yugoslavia - Airdrome Squadron Position: High Result: Off-Target 0% The Bonkers completed her first sortie today. A few enemy fighters were spotted but all were driven off by our Little Friends.
At take-off the rhythm of all four engines plying into the air at wheels up changed, like a reduction of power. But just like that the welcome rhythm returned and all was well.
Bombs were toggled by the Navigator who took over from the Bombardier who passed out. 2Lt S Corcoran dropped ordnance when the formation did. It appears we were off-target.
Landed back at base.

Bomb Run: 20% Casualties: * Damage: 1 superficial hit Disposition: Ready for the next mission Crew Chief: S/SGT Jeff Neufeld (Average Joe - No modifiers, +1 level every 10 missions) Awards and Decorations: Promotions: After Action Report: As we neared the coast, a squadron of Me-109s attacked. The P-47s took one out, but 2 got through and attacked us from the front. Bill and Emmitt scored some hits around the cockpit on one and the Kraut pealed off without hitting us. The other one hit us, but nothing vital. He circled around and came in from our 6 where Kenton got in a good burst and the enemy exploded in flame with no parachute seen. Unbelievably, the board refused Ken's claim! Crossing the coast, a rocket fired from the rear flew just under our port wing. Close call, but no other fighters were observed outbound, flak wasn't even close. Bombs were released on target, and we recrossed the coast undisturbed. Over the Adriatic an Me-110 was chased off by the Little Friends and after that it was smooth sailing. 2ndLt Baron Wood

Bomb Run: 0% Casualties: * Damage: 24 points - 4 superficial strikes, radio destroyed, fuel tank holed Disposition: Ready for the next mission Crew Chief: S/SGT Arnold Carter (Average Joe - No modifiers, +1 level every 10 missions) Awards and Decorations: Promotions: After Action Report: One 109 was driven off by our cover as we entered Yugoslav airspace. Flak was inaccurate over the target. Vince was pretty nervous and was sure he botched the drop. As we turned for home a Focke Wulfe dove straight down through our escorts at us. Eddie and the German exchanged fire but neither scored hits. The German dove past us, then came up from our 12. Bennie thought he scored some hits, the German shot wide and disappeared behind us. Back over the sea, we saw more Messerschmidt single engine fighters. The P-47s engaged one, the other came in from 12 high. Vince thought he got some hits in, which seemed to throw the enemy's aim off. But he came back at our 10. We could feel some hits and I thought I saw some holes in the wing near the fuel tanks, but couldn't see any fuel leaking. The persistent bugger came around for a third attack from our tail. Vern saw some of his tracers strike home, but the Kraut pressed his attack. We felt some more hits, but after checking in the only damage was Oliver reporting our radio was destroyed. The rest of the flight was quiet, landing was smooth in spite of the weather. I'd like to know what connections McGwire in Spirit of 98 has. I'd like a B-17G, too! 2ndLt Ben Willis

We'd just spotted the Yugoslav coast when Denis spotted an Me-109 which was quickly chased off by our escort. Flak felt close, but nothing hit us. Will said we had a good drop on the airfield. Bomb Run: Off On Target: 0% B-24 Damage: 0 Hits Technical issues: Rudder Peckham Points: 10 Repair Time: Routine Maintenance Crew Chief: S/Sgt Steve Fonzarelli, average Landing: Complicated but safe AAR:After a take-off without problem, the "T-Tailed Bathtub" joins its place in the head formation shortly after having passed the Italian coast. It was at this point that the rudder shows worrying signs of failure. Above the Adriatic Sea, the nebulosity becomes more and more dense. During the crossing, some enemy hunters are reported in several places in the wake of the bombers. But the presence of solid "lil friends" seems to decrease their aggressiveness Arrived on the objective area after having passed without incident a "somewhat sleepy" Flak Barrage, the bombardment was completely ineffective (the lack of visibility, the excitement of the first mission ...) Weather is deteriorating on the way back to the base. The enemy activity is reduced to a few points in the distance. The landing is complicated due to the bad weather associated with the rudder problem. The T-Tailed Bathtub is doing with more fear of bad.

We were untouched through the bomb run, and afterwards took slight damage from a 190 over Mostar. It was just over the Adriatic when what seemed to be a desperate final effort by the Luftwaffe caught us. Our gunners damaged two while broken glass and metal cut up my Co-Pilot's face. Maybe Cliff will have more luck with the local ladies playing the wounded warrior card as he was not impressing them with his baby face.

On the positive side, we landed back at Giulia safe and sound, with no damage to the Floogie. The 325th Thunderbolts kept half the Jerries away from us. On the other hand, 2LT Wells flamed a Messerschmidt over the Adriatic on the way home but was denied credit. And Anderson’s “on target” bombing result claim was a bit of a stretch. After Action Report: (using TfT) (Optional rules: Crew-chief effects; Crew Stress; Jasta 6 German Pilot Quality; Peckham’s Random Event Variant Table; Axis Fighter Aircraft 1942 – 45, Table 5-3SB). Nervous trepidation filled all of us as the curtain was whisked back on our first mission. Multiple whooshes of released breath followed, as we saw that it was to be a short hop across the Adriatic. A couple of local training flights since arriving ten days ago means that we are sort of prepared, but this mission would be a lot different if we had to fight our way to the interior of Europe.
Mission: As it happens, we made it through without any problems. The aircraft purred all the way there and back - well done, Woody's groundcrew team - and our escorts saw off our only bogey as we returned across the sea.
Over the target, after Long released our load on the airfield, Hughes called out from the tail that something was coming in on our six. We were then surrounded by explosions as a salvo of rockets detonated. Some shrapnel hit the fuselage, but there was only minor damage and no injuries.
As usual, there were a few of our comrades that had more trouble. One of the 78th's Liberators had an engine fire on takeoff, and aborted (Aircraft identified as Stupid Dragon); one of the 80th's Fortresses also aborted on its hardstanding (Zig-Zag) and Monotonous Maggie, another B-24, had the bad luck to be taken out by an attacking fighter colliding with it. Only 3 chutes were seen.
So - a successful first mission that didn't stretch us too much. I think this has been a great shakedown for the crew and aircraft, but I am certain that there will be more taxing missions ahead.

Ingress
The mission was uneventful until we were approaching the Yugoslavian coast when a schwarm of five FW190s came down on us. Had our escort not been able to draw any of them away, the outcome could have been quite different. As it was, we were left three to deal with on our own coming in high from our one o'clock, six and nine. The first was damaged by the cheek gun, which returned fire, missed and broke off. Also, seeing his other two colleagues taken out by the port waist gun and the tail turret would have been very disheartening.
Bombing Run
There was no damage from flak on the way in, De La Zouch was able to focus on the task in hand and gave us a successful bombing run with 50% of our bombs were on target. Our cargo delivered, it was time to return to base.
Egress
It was not to be an easy ride. A Messerschmitt Bf110 coming up in a vertical climb surprised us and was to cause a lot of problems. Defensive fire was ineffective but its offensive fire damaged the starboard wing root, took out the radio and caused other superficial damage. Coming around again, this time from the front, it evaded our defensive fire and fired again, causing even further damage to the starboard wing root and wounding Vespucci in his lower right arm. Whether it was overconfidence or he took a wrong turn, he made a tactical error coming in again level from our 3 o'clock. This time, defensive fire was effective and the ball turret took him down.
The rest of the journey was thankfully uneventful. Despite the weather having taken a turn for the worst, we were able to land safely back at Foggia.
Aftermath
Vespucci was immediately sent off to the infirmary to get patched up. He was able to join us again later, classed as fit for duty but now able to brag that he had been injured in combat.
Although she had taken some damage, "Maisie"'s wing would be properly reattached, any dent to the #1 engine would be hammered out, and the radio switched out with a new one. According to the Crew Chief Jenssen, she would be ready for action tomorrow morning if required.
I felt that an evening in the bar was well deserved.

80TH BOMB SQUADRON AFTER-ACTION REPORT MISSION 1
The men sat expectantly, waiting for the boss to enter. By now, they had all heard the story about the squadron commander. He had been an aircraft commander with the 100th Bomb Group in England. Despite that squadron's reputation as the "Bloody 100th", his crew had completed twenty-four missions without even one man being wounded. On their 25th mission, what should have been a milk run on a transportation target in France, everything had gone pear-shaped. Over the target, the ship took a direct hit from a flak burst just after bombs away, with the bomb bay doors still open. The explosion and resulting fires had killed every man on the crew...except Captain Shapiro who was not even wounded. He had put the aircraft into a dive, eventually extinguishing the fires. He barely pulled out of the dive under a thousand feet above the terrain. With two engines out, he nursed the aircraft back across the Channel, landing gear up at an RAF fighter base. It was at that point that he discovered that he was the sole survivor. When he was returned to Thorpe Abbotts, he was nearly catatonic. Following several days in the hospital and a week at a Flak Farm, he was promoted to major, awarded a DFC, and informed that he would be heading back to the United States. He categorically refused to be sent back home. Pinetree agreed to reassign him as the squadron commander of the 80th Bomb Squadron with the sole caveat that he was not, under any circumstances, to fly any more missions.
As he entered the briefing tent, no one seemed to see him until the XO called them to attention. He did not so much walk down the aisle as glide down it. As he faced the men, the lines on his face belied the smile he showed. "Take your seats, gentlemen.
"I want to congratulate you on a good mission. Only four men were wounded and we lost no aircraft. By all reports, you flew well, in a good, tight formation. Although the bombing results were not as good as I might have hoped, they were acceptable. In terms of accuracy, 2LT Will Jennings of Bugs paced the squadron with 60% in the box, followed by 2LT James Reilly of Vampire Vamp at 50%. Overall, the squadron got 24.4% in the box. I'd like to see improvement there, gentlemen."
He paused, looked at the entire assembly, and continued, "The best news is that we did not lose any aircraft despite flying as the Low Squadron. That is a tribute to your remaining in a good, tight formation. I want to see more of the same on future missions." He looked at the XO, nodded, and left the front as the XO called the squadron to attention.

78TH BOMB SQUADRON
AFTER-ACTION REPORT
MISSION 1
With a creak of a door in walks the XO Captain Garfield followed by Major Rudy Jopp and his bulldog the ‘Admiral.
At the same time Sgt Wallace bellows: “Boxcars… Attention !”....and everyone rises.
“At ease, gentlemen...at ease". Well our 1st combat sortie is in ! the books. We all did our duty but unfortunately we lost the Monotonous Maggie and her crew led by 1Lt DeSantis.. I have reports of just three parachutes. May God be with them all.”
Pausing for a moment to refocus, “Early results are not good with just 25% dropped on target. I know this will improve ….now that we have the opening jitters behind us.”
“Congrats to the Fire Bell, Louisiana Belle and Arkansas Traveler who dropped 50% on-target.. The Wood's Chopper bagged the 1st German fighter “.
A round of applause engulfed the room.
“Let’s be safe out there. Do your jobs as you were trained. “
The Major glances over and quick-nods to his XO, who begins to walk toward the aisle. The two men + the Admiral begin to leave.
“Boxcars… Attention !”, and the assembled throng rises again.
"Dismissed!"
