Bomb Run: Off On Target: 0% B-24 Damage: Superficial + Bomb control inoperable (Navigator's Equipement) Technical issues: - Peckham Points: 12 Landing: safe Repair Time: 1night Crew Chief: S/Sgt Steve Fonzarelli, average Report from 2LT Vincent Wolfe (Co-Pilot)For once, the weather was fine. As usual, Edward lifts off the bomber as if in training and inserts it "like daddy in mummy" in Slot #4 of the Middle Cell . We set a NW course for Verona, flying over the Adriatic Sea to minimize the risk of running into enemy fighters. At the same time, we benefit from the protection of the P-47s of the 325th FG! This mission is more of a walk in the park than a war mission. Even our stressed-out life Matthew Palmer seems more relaxed, right up to the moment when a collision with our starboard neighbour is narrowly avoided thanks to my vigilance. If we avoid the coastal FlaK before arriving in the area, we fall victim to the one attached to the target, which renders the bombing system unusable. I really hope our bombs will cause as few civilian casualties and hit as few historic buildings as possible. The return journey is uneventful, apart from an encounter with Mussolini's fighters, which our escort effortlessly repels.

I hear “Don’t get used to it” more than once. Our take-off and assembly is by the book. One of the squadron aborts with an oil leak. OutboundZones 2-3: Nothing to report. Zone 4: “Bandits!” comes the cry from our gunners as three ME-109s approach The Schmoo. The P-47s take on two of them. The remaining German is shot from the sky by Bailey and Olafsson. We’ve just had our baptism of fire. Zone 5: Nothing to report. Zone 6: Prior to take-off, one of the veteran pilots… can’t remember his name… had pulled me aside and said to not get complacent about the sporadic coastal flak. “Never can tell when one of those shells might have your number on it,” he says. He’s right. Our first exposure to flak results in a hole in our bomber. Thank heavens it’s superficial. Target Zone (7)The Germans leave The Schmoo alone for our target run-in. We’re bracketed by a couple of flak bursts and take some more superficial damage. Zeller’s first-ever combat bomb drop appears to be a good effort, as reported by Schmidt. Still no German attacks as we turn for home, and the flak is well away from us. InboundZone 6: LT Sweeney calls in that he’s lost cockpit heat and is dropping out of formation for the trip home. We watch as his plane descends to warmer air. Good luck, guys. Zone 5: A pair of ME-110s finally take notice of us. A 325th Thunderbolt chases one away. The other approaches from 9:00 low and runs into a hail of fire. Whether it’s damage or nerves, his return fire is wildly inaccurate, and he calls it quits for today. Zone 4: A lone ME-109 is chased away by our escorts. Zones 3-2: Nothing to report. I have had better landings, but we’re down safe and sound. AAR We haven’t had much time to get our new crew member SGT Jim Walkup trained on our crew’s operating procedures plus we have S/SGT Judge Justice filling in as flight engineer for Beau who is still recovering. I was a little concerned about how smoothly they would fit in with the rest of the crew, but they did an excellent job.
OUTBOUND Good weather for a change, we were able to take off and join the formation without any problems. The jugs from the 325th FG joined up right on schedule. Shortly after we were out over the Adriatic Sea a Me109 slipped through the fighter cover and "Judge" dinged its’ engine causing it to miss, probably a Green pilot. After that a running gunfight developed with the Krauts and the 325th as we proceeded towards the target. First they intercepted a Me109, followed by pair of Me109s and a Me210. After that a couple of singleton Fw190s. As we approached the coast the little friends intercepted another Fw190 while Judge and Vern traded shots with a Fw190 attacking in a vertical dive. Everyone missed. After that Goering’s boys tried lobbing rockets into the formation with one bursting near us but no damage. After that a Me109 tried a vertical dive attack again with no success. While the jugs were busy with a Fw190 a Me109 tried to sneak in on out six but Red shredded the tail surfaces and a chute was observed as it went down.
TARGET AREA As we entered the target area Red reported that a B-17 with strange marking as shadowing the formation, but he lost sight of it as the enemy fighter activity started, and it didn’t follow us into the flak zone. The little friends stayed active engaging with a pair of Fw190s that tried their luck followed by a singleton Fw190. Then the fighters broke off their efforts as the flak started. It was medium intensity but ineffective. As the squadron made its’ bomb run Myril called out OMG the The Reluctant Dragon just blew up it looks like nobody got out. Buck stayed focused and on-target but only assessed as 30% effective. After the bomb run the flak lessened and continued to be ineffective. After the squadron reformed at the RP the gun fight between the jugs and Goering’s boys resumed, with the jugs intercepting a trio or Fw190s, followed by a pair of Me109s, and then a Fw190. We were also attacked by a F190 in a vertical dive the only way they had been getting to attack us. Once again everyone missed.
INBOUND There was some more light flak was we passed over the coast that did no damage. There was one last burst of fighter activity once we were out of the water. Our little friends picked off a Fw190 while ne attacked at our 10:30. Russ and Moose shot it up enough that it tok a wild shot and broke off the attack. The escorts then chased off 2 more Fw190s in succession. Finally a pair of Fw190s attacked one at our 12 and one at our 6. Judge and Buck damaged the one at our 12 which missed and broke off the attack while Russ and the Fw190 at our six traded shots with both missing.
safe landing at Giulia Airfield

After Action Report (using QOTS): We had fine weather for the mission. Temptacious aborted just after taking off but everyone else managed to form up and the squadron headed across the sea making for Verona and its Marshaling Yard.
Everything seemed quiet and serene until zone 5 where we spied some German fighters. But either they didn’t see us or weren’t interested, both parties continuing on their own way.
About 100 miles later we encountered a lone 109, but he was chased off by some of our escorts. In the target zone five Italian 205s singled us out. But before three of them were able to take a run at us they ran afoul of some little friends. Of the two that made it through, manning the chin turret our new bombardier Lieutenant Kassel damaged one, setting it on fire. As it passed the tail, gunner Driscoll raked it with fire along its wing and fuselage, causing the fuel tank to explode separating the wing from the body. The plane spiraled out of control towards the ground with the pilot trapped inside by centrifugal force. Both gunners shared credit. The other fighter came in a diving attack but Sergeant Rossetti in the top turret also set this one on fire, and it plummeted to the ground to join the other fighter.
On the bomb run as we were about to release of our bombs we were rocked by three hits They bracketed the plane off the wings and just below, piercing a fuel tank which thankfully sealed and destroying the rafts. The flak had knocked us around enough to throw off Kassel’s aim and the payload totally missed the target.
Inbound
At the rally point a 109 dove on us but in turn was met by some P-47s and he never had a chance. Bonkers had to leave formation and we wished her good luck. The rest of the flight home was uneventful and we landed safely back at Giulia without incident.
A disappointing mission. So far, our track record sucks and I can’t help but feel that we aren’t doing our part. But tomorrow, as they say, is a new day – and hopefully a better one for us.

80th BOMB SQUADRON Mission #9, VERONA, ITALY - MARSHALING YARD AAR
"Gentlemen, there's not a lot to be said on the positive side. As you know, Call House Madam went down and the Brits were only able to rescue two men. The remainder of the crew has been listed as Missing In Action. We have hopes that they will either be found by friendly forces or, at worst, listed by the Red Cross as POW. We also lost several other men and their next of kin are being notified. I will tell you that the hardest job I have is writing letters to the families of those Killed In Action.
"I wish I could balance that lousy news with good news about the bombing accuracy but this mission went poorly with one aircraft aborting, three aircraft getting nothing on target, and one aircraft unable to bomb. The squadron average of those aircraft that released was a paltry 21.5%. Top honors go to Wongo at 45% with second best going to Double Bomb at 40%. I'd like to stand here and lecture you on the necessity of better accuracy but I'd be preaching to the choir. You've heard the lecture enough times." He slowly gazed around the group with several men declining to meet his gaze.
"The one positive on this mission is that the squadron claimed fifteen enemy aircraft and received credit for eleven. The big news is that Master Sergeant Aldrich of Pride of the Wolverines has earned a DFC for becoming an ace." There was a general whooping and clapping, although anyone familiar with the squadron would have noted that it was somewhat subdued.
"That's all I have, gentlemen. Get some rest and try to relax. The wing's tenth mission is coming up and I know you'll do your best...you always do." A pause. "Dismissed!"

78TH BOMB SQUADRON
AFTER-ACTION REPORT
MISSION 9 - Verona, Italy
With a creak of a door in walks the the CO Major Rudy Jopp and the XO Captain Garfield.
At the same time, Sgt Wallace bellows: “Boxcars… Attention! ” … and everyone rises.
Major Jopp heads for the platform and begins; "On todays sortie to Verona we dropped just 31% on target, the first performance under 35% since week one of our campaign here in Italy. It certainly did not help three B24's were not able to bomb the target due to battle damage, two B-24's did not even take off and as you might have heard we lost the Louisiana Belle with all crew assumed KIA. Their next of kin will be informed"
"Congrats to the Betty Anne who led the Flying Boxcars with 60% on target followed by the Morning Express with 50%. On our next mission the Island City Gal piloted by 1Ltt Thomas Van Hare has been assigned to active duty with the 78th and we expect a replacement for the Louisiana Belle as well.
Ruffling thru some paperwork "Yesterday another dispatch was received from the Red Cross in England. They are reporting the following airmen are listed Prisoners of War:"
1st Lt Romeo Clayton 2nd Lt Caesar Woodward 2nd Lt Arthur Alstott T/Sgt Clarence Patterson T/4th Travis Kauffman Sgt Calvin Huang T/4th Caleb Compton Sgt Damari Early
'And sadly they reported two KIA's"
S/Sgt Kamil Fisher 2nd Lt Noe Parra
"This still leaves thirty-three of our brothers MIA"
"That's all boys"
The Major closes his briefing folder and begins to walk toward the aisle.
“Boxcars… Attention” and the assembled throng rises again.
"Dismissed!"

B-17G "Sandy's Chariot"79th Bomber Squadron, 509th (H) Bombardment GroupCommander: 1LT Gilbert TylerMission Date: 15 FEB 44Mission Number: 9Bomber Mission: 3Formation: MiddlePosition: MidTarget: Verona, ItalyTarget Type: Marshalling YardBomb Run: On Target - 40%Crew:Enemies Encountered:Peckham Points: 127 - Substantial damage done on landing as a result of damage to the rear wheel. Should be repaired in time for the next mission.AAR (TfT used for mission)This one was a bit hairy and once again showed the remarkable ability of the B-17 to sustain significant damage and still return with her crew. We were fortunate not to suffer any injuries to personnel on this mission. We were twice jumped by four 190s and lived to see another day, unscathed. Hogan at the radio room gun was credited with a half kill on a 109 and our ball gunner, Ben Rogers, was sure he shot down another Messerschmitt but was denied by the Gunnery Board. We had a good look at the target and were pleased with the success of our bombing run. We look forward to our next mission.
